My Special K Challenge Review

Updated on June 17, 2014

I Took the Special K Challenge - Here are My Results

This is my personal Special K diet review. I am a stay at home mom to three little ones. I first took the Special K Challenge after having my second baby. I took the Special K Challenge again after having my third baby. This is an honest review of my experience with the Special K diet. Here I share how the Special K Challenge works, how to develop a Special K diet plan that works for you, and I give my personal Special K challenge results.

If you're looking for an inexpensive way to slim down without having to measure food or know a lot about calorie counting and fat grams, then the Special K Challenge is a great diet plan to try. Of course, there is no magic way to lose weight. We pack on the pounds slowly over time, and need to give ourselves time to shed the weight in a healthy way. I'm not an advocate of fad diets. I believe eating healthy and getting active are the best ways to shed unwanted pounds and keep them off. The Special K plan simply makes it easy to eat healthy because all of their foods are convenient and affordable.

I am very pleased with the results I got while taking the Special K Challenge. It was a super easy and affordable way to slim down after having my babies. Read on to learn about my own Special K Challenge results and read other Special K diet reviews.

The Special K Challenge is a Great Plan for Moms

The Special K Challenge is a plan, not a diet. It encourages you to not skip breakfast and to eat sensibly. The products are all ready to eat or super quick to prepare, which is great for a mom's busy day. I like modeling healthy eating habits for my kids instead of having them watch me drink diet shakes or measure everything I eat.

Special K Diet: Get Inspired - You Really Can Lose Weight

My Special K Diet Review

How the Special K Challenge worked for this busy mom.

I had just had my second baby by c-section in under two years. My first and second babies are only 20 months apart. Having two pregnancies and two c-sections that close together after the age of 30 really took it's toll on my body.

I really wanted to lose weight, but I was breastfeeding. So, diet drinks and pills are out of the question. I needed something easy and convenient because with two babies to care for I didn't have time to count calories, weigh food, or prepare fancy meals.

The Special K Diet was perfect for me. I would eat a bowl of Special K cereal for breakfast and lunch, and when I was short on time I grabbed a Special K cereal bar instead. In between meals, I stayed hydrated and satisfied with the Special K protein water (love them!).

I also tend to get bored easily, but Special K has a lot of different flavors to choose from in their cereals, bars, and protein waters. I kept two to three varieties of each cereal, bar, and protein water in my pantry and just rotated the different flavors so I didn't get bored.

I lost weight and slimmed down while taking the Special K Challenge. It was easy and the best part is that I didn't feel like I was dieting.

What I Like About the Special K Challenge:

It's simple.

It's convenient.

It's affordable.

It tastes good.

It offers variety.

My Review of the Special K Products

All about the Special K products.

  • Special K Cereal -- Many flavors to choose from (Original, Chocolatey Delight, Cinnamon Pecan, Red Berries, Vanilla Almond, Fruit and Yogurt). All of them taste great. The cinnamon and chocolate are my two favorites, but when I get tired of them I eat the almond one or the berry one. They are all yummy. I'm allergic to oats and soy, so this makes Special K cereals the perfect choice for me. I eat them with 1% milk, because I don't like skim.
  • Special K Cereal Bars -- The cereal bars are intended to be a snack. They are not intended to be a meal replacement. They really take the edge off of your hunger, taste great, and have some vitamins. They taste like a grown up rice crispy treat. They come in a lot of flavors (Peaches and berries, Honey Nut, Strawberry, Blueberry, Chocolatey Drizzle, Vanilla Crisp). The chocolate is my favorite.
  • Special K Protein Bars -- These are intended for meal replacement, but they are soy protein (I'm allergic) so I have not been able to try them. They come in your choice of Chocolate Peanut Butter, Chocolatey Chip, Double Chocolate, or Strawberry.
  • Special K Protein Water -- This is my favorite Special K product. Not only does it have 5 grams of protein (whey protein) and taste great, but it's also packed with B vitamins. The B vitamins really keep me going. It's better than a shot of espresso!

My Special K Challenge Results

My first experience with the Special K Challenge.

I started the Special K Challenge when my second baby was four months old. I had to add a little more calories and protein to my plan since I was breastfeeding.

Here's what I ate on my Special K plan.:

  • Bowl of Special K Cereal for Breakfast (I alternate between Cinnamon Pecan and Chocolatey Delight).

  • Handful of almonds, a Special K cereal bar, and a piece of fruit for a mid-morning snack.

  • Bowl of Special K Cereal for lunch.

  • Special K protein water for an early afternoon pick-me-up and a handful of almonds.

  • Light yogurt (with added fiber) and a piece of fruit for a mid-afternoon snack.

  • An average supper (whatever I feel like cooking: spaghetti, roast, meatloaf, etc).

My son just turned five months old. Sticking to the above plan for the past month has given me the following results:

  • Lost 12 pounds.

  • Gone from wearing my large maternity clothes to a normal size 10.
  • My body now curves in at the waist again (had no defined waist when I started the Special K plan).

A couple of months later, I still ate Special K cereal for breakfast and kept my two snacks the same, but added in a normal, sensible lunch (instead of cereal for lunch. Here were my results after my son turned 10 months old:

  • Lost a total of 67 pounds.

  • My face was noticeably thinner.

  • Flatter tummy.

This is where my Special K journey ends. Shortly after my son turned 10 months old, I got pregnant again.

I'm very pleased with my Special K Challenge results. It was an easy and convenient way for me to get the baby weight off. I also felt great the whole time.

I Recommend...

If you're really ready to lose the weight and get fit, then I recommend the following books:

My Special K Challenge Results Take 2

My second experience with the Special K Challenge.

I recently had my third baby. That makes three pregnancies in under three and a half years. Having three babies back to back has not been good to my body at all. I've started the Special K Challenge again. I first took the Special K Challenge about four months after having my son. It's now been about four and a half months since having my third baby. Today is day one for me restarting the Special K Challenge.

This time will be very different than the last. Before the baby weight didn't seem to start dropping until I started the Spcial K plan. After this baby, however, the weight has been falling off (I weighed 189 lbs at delivery and now 4.5 months post partum I weigh 148 and wear a size 14). Between breastfeeding, caring for an infant, and chasing two toddlers, I've been burning calories with very little effort. Now my weight loss has plateaued and I have decided to start taking the Special K Challenge again.

2011 Update:

My third baby is now one year old. I weigh 135 lbs. and wear a size 8. I'm almost where I want to be. I'd like to weigh 127.

My Special K Challenge results this time:

Lost a total of 13 pounds. My face is even more noticeably thinner than the first time I took the challenge.Much flatter tummy.Trimmer thighs.

My Tip for Making the Special K Challenge Easier

When I started taking the Special K Challenge after my third baby, I began adding 1/2 cup of All Bran to each bowl of Special K cereal. This made it more filling and satisfying, but also added fiber. Fiber not only helps your digestive system function properly, but it also helps you shed inches around your waist. I especially like mixing original All Bran with the Special K cinnamon pecan cereal. The two taste so yummy together.

Great Lens. My dad ate Special K for breakfast every day for over 30 years. I associate the cereal with him

@zumbawjade: I understand how some get bored without variety in their diets, but I liked having everything planned out, especially when I was busy taking care of little ones. It was nice to have convenience foods ready and waiting.

This is a great review of the Special K diet. I've always enjoyed their bars and cereal however I have no idea how you stuck to it without getting bored. I would never be able to eat Special K for breakfast and lunch day after day and be satisfied. I would get bored and stray from my plan. For me, the more variance I allow myself, the more successful I am in my endeavors. I'm sure it depends on the individual. Congrats on your weight loss!

I was surprised. I did the special k challenge for 2 weeks and lost about 8 pounds but I somehow steered away from it and since then have lost a total of 15 pounds but I am going to start it again so I won't eat all this junk food again.

ThrivingMom, Thank you for this really cool lens. I wasn't sure what to expect (because I'm not a big cereal lover), but I love your style and your success. I have a weight loss lens too and I find that feeling good about food is crucial to success. Your enthusiasm is palpable here; please keep us posted as your journey unfolds.

Hi, great diet review. It's always good to hear some honest opinions and facts about a weight loss plan instead of the hype. I think the hard thing for me (as a foodie) would be having Special K for both breakfast AND lunch. I don't tend to skip breakfast but have been looking for ways to trim some calories and lose about 10 pounds, and do so in a way that it won't immediately come back once I stop the "diet" - which always seems to be the problem with going on some kind of strict regimen of only eating certain food products, meal replacements, etc.

It just makes sense that if you replace a fatty high calorie breakfast with a low fat cereal breakfast of Special K that you will indeed drop a couple pounds a week. Like all diet plans the Special K diet plan works when it is not taken to excess. Diet responsibly. Great diet review.

Your review has inspired me. This is day two for me on the challenge. I practice eating smaller portions for a week before starting the plan to help my stomach prepare. This is my first time seeing such a promising review for the diet. I like how you laid out what you ate and how long you did the challenge. I started the plan to change the way I eat and not as a quick plan knowing the challenge wouldn't have lasting effects for only two weeks. My goal is to lose 51 pounds and with your review I feel as though I am more likely to achieve it in a timely manor. Being that I've never been active I am slowly starting to be active for at least 30 minutes a day. I plan to increase this as my body gets a hang of the new routine, but I am not physically able to do hardcore workouts. I also begin to take multi- vitamins because I know that I am not getting all the nutrition I need (I am a very picky eater that don't eat many healthy food, i.e. fruits and veggies).

Thank you for your review! Sorry for such a long response but your review has really inspired me. So far I actually like the challenge. I am a full time college student and a full time single-mom. So having something this simple is great. Thanks again for sharing your experience!

Hi, I am starting the plan today! Breakfast is my favorite meal of the my previous choices (bacon, eggs and some type of bread) will be missed, but I am willing to give them up to shed 30 pounds...this is my jump start! I really like the cereal in the mornings...before I signed up and read your review, I was adding the bran (my husband's cereal choice) to the Special K berry...really satisfying! My biggest challenge is having snacks (not a natural snacker...only when cravings hit...that's not often) in between to help me not go for the wrong stuff at mealtime because I am usually starving by then. Week two in starting to exercise 3x a week in the a.m. with my son. It does make a world of a difference energy wise...but I get hungry more often because, in reading endless weightloss articles, my metabolism is working! Yay! So here goes, day one of my 2-week Special K challenge...I will let you know how it is going at my one week mark. Thanks for your story and encouragement!

@anonymous: I ate the Special K products for a long time. Without the Special K challenge I tend to skip breakfast. I'm even eating Special K cereals yet again now. The Special K challenge is a great way to kick off a new lifestyle change of eating healthy consistently. I'm now exercising regularly in the morning and drink a protein recovery shake for breakfast after my workouts. On my off days, I eat Special K cereal for breakfast. The best way to lose weight is by creating a calorie deficit (for most women that means eating between 1500 and 1800 calories daily) and by exercising (alternating cardio with strength training).

well, Im back at the end of week 2, and I have lost 6 pounds, and this is basically without a lot of exercise, so I would say this plan does work. Still hungry sometimes, but stepping on the scale and seeing the results, makes it all worthwhile

Hello, I have a question. Did you have to stick to the plan more than 2 weeks in order to get these results? I just bought the cereal, shakes, bars and snacks, so I'm super ready to start tomorrow. I need to lose about 20 pounds, can you give me some tips and advises as to how to go about it. I'm excited about it!! ^_^. And thank you for sharing your story with us!

@ajgodinho: Thank you for your kind comments and blessing. Research has shown that why the Special K challenge is so effective is that it is a lifestyle change rather than a diet. We all know it's better to eat balanced meals spaced evenly throughout the day, but most people skip breakfast and then eat way too much later in the day. The Special K plan forces people to eat breakfast, which is a good thing!

@anonymous: That's great! Thank you for sharing your story. If you didn't see my note above, try adding a little bit of Original All Bran (even just 2 Tablespoons will do) to your bowl of Special K. It will add fiber and help you stay full, but tastes way better than trying to eat a bowl of plain All Bran by itself.

I heard about the Special K Challenge before, but never took the time to learn more about it. When I came across your thoroughly reviewed lens on the topic, I decided to read it. One of the most important aspects that I liked about your review is that you mention âSpecial K is a plan, not a dietâ. I think this is critical because itâs about losing weight in a healthy manner and sticking with it as a lifestyle rather than a short-term diet. Thanks for candidly sharing your experience with the challenge and congratulations on your results. One bit of information that Iâd be interested to know is where do the Special K products measure on the GI (Glycemic Index). For me, I have the opposite problem, I have a fast metabolism, so I need to work on keeping those pounds onâ¦lol : ) **Blessed by a Squid-Angel**

@Kiwisoutback: I eat the cinnamon pecan and I bet the pecans in it help keep me satisfied. Sometimes I fix a bowl of cinnamon pecan Special K with a small handful of All Bran added. I don't like the taste of plain All Bran by itself, but it's yummy with the cinnamon pecan Special K. I can eat a couple of Kashi cereals, but I'm allergic to oat and soy, so most of their cereals I'm unable to eat. My husband eats Kashi. Their cereal bars look yummy and very substantial.

I eat Special K once in a while, but I get very hungry from the cereal and feel I need something a little bit more substantial. I've been eating Kashi and I feel fuller from it in the morning.

Thanks for visiting Julie. I think the almonds are keeping me from feeling hungry because they have so much protein. Also, I don't know if you did it when they had the protein waters or not (they are kind of new) but they really completely knock out my hunger. Also, they are packed with B vitamins for a natural energy boost. The Special K protein waters make me feel super!
