Stay Fit With Essential Oils

Updated on December 23, 2015

Essential Oils

Essential oils have been used to heal and soothe for thousands of years. The curative attributes of essential oils can be used to treat a wide range of physical conditions effectively. Listed below is a selection of some of the common ailments and conditions that afflict people, along with the suggested essential oils to provide relief and to stay fit.

Essential oil remedies for some common ailments and conditions

Arthritis: Arthritis is characterized by stiffness, pain, swelling, deformity, and a decrease in the range of movement of the joints in the body due to inflammation. The symptoms of this painful and physically restrictive condition can be alleviated by using lavender, rosemary, and juniper essential oils. The essential oil has to be combined with a carrier or base oil, and then massaged on the affected areas. However, care must be taken not to massage the joints when they are swollen or inflamed. In addition, a warm bath can be prepared by adding ten drops of essential oil into it, in which the affected person is advised to soak in for about 15 minutes.

Allergies: Allergies are caused when the body reacts to a substance that it erroneously identifies as harmful, triggering the immune system to get rid of the invader. Allergies can be treated with lavender, chamomile, and lemon balm essential oils. One method of relieving an allergic attack is to combine the essential with a carrier oil, and massage it on the sinus area. Secondly, douse a clean piece of cloth with a few drops of essential oil, and breathe in the vapors. As a cautionary measure, be cognizant about your allergies, and use essential oils cautiously.

Asthma: With the increasing levels of pollution in the atmosphere, more and more people are falling victim to the ravages of asthma. During an asthmatic attack, the lining of the air passages get inflamed, thus obstructing the flow of air into the lungs. This leaves sufferers experiencing great difficulty in breathing, severe cases resulting in near suffocation. Apart from difficulty in breathing, wheezing, coughing, and tightness within the chest are the typical symptoms. Using frankincense, clary sage, and lavender essential oils can relieve these symptoms. In order to ease the tight feeling in the chest, a combination of essential oil with a carrier oil can be massaged around the breast bone. Besides, it is recommended to soak for fifteen minutes in a warm bath with ten drops of essential oil added into the water. During an asthma attack, it is advised not to inhale any aroma oil.

Cellulite: Poor diet, inactivity, or heredity can cause cellulite. Whatever may be the cause, nobody likes the unsightly effects of cellulite. Lemon, juniper, and geranium essential oils can be used to minimize the effects of cellulite. Combine essential oil with a carrier oil and any skin cream that is free of lanolin, and massage the cellulite affected areas every day. Also, soak in a warm bath into which ten drops of essential oil has been added.

Immune System: The immune system distinguishes between foreign and harmful matters in the body and those that belong to the body. When the immune system detects an invader in the body, it gets activated, and destroys or neutralizes what it identifies as an enemy. Factors like stress, improper diet, pollution in the environment, and certain medications can hinder the proper functioning of the immune system. Lemon, tea tree, and lavender essential oils are the suggested oils for treating immunity related conditions. The essential oil can be combined with a carrier oil and used for massage. A few drops of oil can be added to a clean piece of cloth or a vaporizer, and the aroma inhaled. Plus, a warm bath prepared with about ten drops of essential oil can be very beneficial. A physician must be consulted if there are serious immune system complications.

Other beneficial uses of essential oils

Many other conditions like fatigue and exhaustion, gingivitis, headaches, insomnia, premenstrual syndrome, the problems of menopause, etc., can be alleviated by the healing properties of essential oils. They also help to relieve inflammation, aid in cell regeneration, used to heal wounds, used as an antiseptic and an anti-fungal remedy, help digestion, and ameliorate pain. Essential oils can also be used in many other ways like invigorating and stimulating us early in the morning, which helps us to feel fit during the day, and then using them at the end of the day to soothe the stresses of the day thus restoring our sense of balance and mental peace.

It is advisable to consult a physician in order to get professional advice on whatever condition you may have, and then take the guidance of an aromatherapy practitioner to experiment and find out the full benefits of essential oils.
