If you visit a hypnotist for a one-on-one smoking cessation session, one of the first things they’ll ascertain is your desire level to quit – I myself do this in a phone interview prior to the first private session.
Determining the motivation level for a person to stop smoking is critically important to the success of any quit smoking program. If the smoker is quitting because their family or friends want them to – then it unlikely to be successful long term - they may stop for a few weeks - even months but eventually the urge will be too strong to overcome, and they'll relapse.
The smoker has to have the motivation to stop for their own reasons, and not somebody else’s.
Because this is so critical to the success of an individual if they don’t convince me they are ready to stop smoking then I don’t take them on as a client. I'm not interested in wasting their money or my time.
The important point I’m making here is that just buying a stop smoking hypnosis CD product does not guarantee your success at quitting. Your own motivation to quit remains the deciding factor in the overall success of the program.
I recommend you not purchase a self-hypnosis stop smoking audio program unless you can honestly answer to yourself you’ll do whatever it takes to quit.

You tear open the shrink-wrap on the first cd and... now what?
Apart from reading any materials that come with the cds – which is likely to provide a program guides and tips, etc – the first thing you need to do is establish a routine.
This means setting aside time each day for the first month to listen to the sessions.
I know this sounds simple and obvious but you'd be surprised at the number of people who purchase these products and then expect magically time to open up in their busy schedule each day to listen to their hypnosis session. It won't unless you plan the time in advance and stick to it.
The critical point about this time is that you can’t skip it or keep moving it around – at least for the first few weeks. It needs to be a time and a commitment to yourself that you can’t break.
Treat this as if you’ve made an appointment with a certified hypnotist at their practice and have to pay for the session whether you turn up or not.
Don’t get too concerned about WHEN to do it such as morning or evening - this is a preference you dictate and control – but DO make it consistent.
Preparation Tips for Listening to your Stop Smoking Hypnosis CD Program:
Here are my key preparation tips to get you in the right mood and frame of mind for listening to your quit smoking hypnosis CD program.
- You’ll need to listen to each CD in a quiet place and make sure you’ll not be disturbed for the length of a session – usually around 30 minutes.
- Use headphones on your CD player – it really doesn’t matter what type they are – ear plugs or ear cups (my preference) – as long as they make you feel immersed in the session.
- Subdue the lighting in the room if possible – you’re aiming to create a lighting effect to support a calm and contemplative setting.
- Sit in a comfortable chair that supports a relaxed environment for you. I have a large black recliner I use for my own personal sessions.
Beyond the First Session:
Getting the motivation for the first self-hypnosis session is unlikely to be a challenge – doubtless you’ll be eager to start. But then you have to keep it going.
This is where the strength of your self-motivation comes into play to keep you diligently allocating time for repeated listening of each session from your stop smoking hypnosis cds.
Realize the behaviors supporting your smoking habit have formed over many years and hypnosis will help you break free of your addiction by working with your powerful subconscious to modify your behaviors and change those habits.
But there is retraining of your subconscious to be done and for some this can happen in a few sessions, and for others it takes much longer. Success is meaured in you getting to your final destination not how quickly the journey took.
Some techniques that have helped my clients overcome those occasions when the stress and urge to relapse is high include:
- If you can, announce you’re quitting to your family and friends and seek their support. Making something public helps cement the commitment, and gives you a life-line if and when you need it.
- Avoid situations where you know you’ll be under stress such as clubs and bars, and gatherings where they’ll be other smokers. If your spouse smokes it would be beneficial to the success of your smoking cessation program if you both stopped.
- Write out all the reasons why you’re quitting. Such as health, kids, self-esteem, etc. They can be bullets that trigger in you a positive response when times are tough. Keep these handy on your person all the time.
Timetable of Healing:
The human body is amazing in its ability to recover from bad habits.
The body starts its walk down the road to recovery after the first 20 minutes of quitting the habit, thus proving that whenever you quit is always good.
Within those first precious 20 minutes your pulse rate will drop as will your blood pressure. The temperature in your hands and feet will begin to increase to its normal rate.
After eight hours have passed the amount of oxygen in the blood rises to the normal point and the carbon monoxide in the blood drops to its normal level.
After 24 hours, your potential for having a heart attack is already on the decline.
Once 48 hours have passed more positive developments can be seen. Your nerve endings start tingling for the better and begin the regrowth process. As well you should notice that your sense of smell and taste begin to show signs of improvement.
