80 Original Ideas on What to Write in a Sympathy Card

Updated on September 24, 2014

Finding the Right Thing to Say to Someone Who has Lost a Person Close to Them

Losing someone personally versus knowing someone who is going through a great loss are two very different things. If you've gone through a loss, you certainly understand the difference.

I know it seems obvious that there is a difference between losing a loved one as opposed to supporting someone going through a loss; but until you actually live through the passing of a person you deeply love, what you thought about other people's feelings who suffered this before you becomes immediately real and a new in-depth empathic understanding may overwhelm you; You may feel as though a light switch flipped on, and your knowingness about life and death has reached a cosmic level.

So finding the right words to comfort people who are living a great loss can be challenging if you've never personally gone through it. This page is designed to offer you some creatively understanding ideas and things to say to someone suffering through grief. Granted, nothing we say can ever change the pain for that person, however, it may bring a smile, lend a distant shoulder or show the person that you also feel the loss of their loved one.

Honoring a Loved One with Quotes or By Building an Online Remembrance

A unique way to honor someone who has passed away:

For one year, as a way to honor my father's passing, I post a song and a written dedication to him on the 5th of each month (the day he passed away).

Having had a great deal of trouble coping with his passing, I find it helps. You can see it here, Song Dedication for Dad. I started posting these on facebook, but then decided I needed a more permanent and organized place as a keepsake. So I added a page for my father to my website. If you have a blog, you could also create a memorial that way.

You can use this idea to create a loving gift and memorial for a friend or family member. It's a wonderful gesture.

See You Again, by Carrie Underwood

Dad, I Love You, I Miss You So Much - It's Beyond This Life, Beyond This Universe - Til I See You Again

Where did you go dad, where did you go? - I miss you with every breath I take, and not having you here to talk to you, to hug you, to smile with you, to see your face ...it's brutally painful dad. When I hear this song dad, it's what I feel for you, it's what's in my heart. You are my hero dad, forever. This pain is so personal. Said Goodbye (on March 2nd, 2013) turned around and you were gone, gone, gone.

Temporary Home, A beautiful Song by Carrie Underwood

Temporary Home by Carrie Underwood

This song speaks perfectly about this world being our "temporary home" and paints the picture with life examples. The hardest verse to listen to is the third verse - I can barely get through it. It's so hard, but so true.

These words may make someone even more emotional, however, they were personally written and designed by me (Brite-Ideas), after the passing of my dad. The words came straight from my heart, and express the greatest pain I felt when I lost my amazing dad. Dad I love you. I miss you.

These are really powerful and touching sentiments you have written. We do need these thoughts prepared because it is so hard to think during the exhausting time of experiencing a loss. Only someone who has known a painful loss could write such beauty. Thank you for pouring out your heart and spirit in this way to help us all.

We've all lost someone dear - or, if very young, perhaps not yet; but we will experience the loss in time - and yet it never seems to help to find the words for sympathy for someone else in the same grief. I am sure that a great many people will be grateful for your suggestions for gracious, kind, heartfelt words.

My sympathy to you on the loss of your Dad; it's clear from reading this that the two of you had a very special bond and he will always hold a place in your heart and your memory.
