What I Experienced The First Time I Tried The Master Cleanse Diet
Again, the Lemonade Master Cleanse is NOT about long-term weight loss. After the cleanse, look to incorporate as many superfoods that will keep you healthy and keep your hair and skin beautiful. These foods will keep you clean, although you still should do a regular cleanse diet to get rid of the toxins we're all regularly exposed to.
Day 1 - The Salt Water Flush wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I didn't drink Smooth Move tea the night before, but that didn't cause a problem. It didn't work as quickly as I thought either. I waited to start this diet until I had a morning with no out-of-the-home commitments, just in case. It was nothing horrifying, but I would recommend giving yourself half an hour to sip your quart of salt water and then 2 hour for the magic to happen. Get yourself up early to give yourself a big enough window. I wouldn't want to be far from a bathroom for 3 hours after drinking that stuff! The lemonade is nice tasting, but I really became conscious of all the times I WOULD'VE been snacking out of boredom or out of routine. I drank 6 cups of lemonade. You feel full, but you just feel like you should grab a snack or eat with your family... Intense solid food cravings. Finishing off the day with a cup of senna tea was a treat for the taste sense!
Day 2 - The food cravings got even worse on this day. Also, the salt water flush was really not fun to drink this morning. It didn't work as well as it did on Day 1, even though I had Smooth Move tea the night before. I again drank 6 cups of lemonade and finished the day with a cup of Smooth Move tea. I considered giving it up several times out of just wanting to eat something, anything.. I also had intense dreams of cheating on the diet and eating food. When I woke up, I had to think if this really happened or not!
Day 3 - The salt water flush was again NOT a morning treat. I was forcing myself to drink lemonade as I had a lot of commitments outside the home. I had to go 6 hours without access to lemonade in the evening and got very hungry. While I was driving home I was being truly goofy, singing about 'skinny minny me' and how proud I'd be in order to avert myself from stopping in a fast food place. I was SOOO hungry. Of course, this was not a fault of the diet, but rather of my scheduling and lack of properly packing. You're not meant to premix the lemonade as too many of the enzymes from the lemon will die off from that method. Rather, its suggested you premix the lemon, maple syrup and cayenne and bring that with you, mixing that solution with water as you need a drink. I should do this. When I got home I drank several glasses of lemonade and then finished off with my Smooth Move tea and then went to bed. I again had vivid dreams of eating solid food. However, I do think I made it through the evening BECAUSE I was so busy.
Day 4 - The salt water flush was not bad this morning. It still wasn't tasty, but it wasn't as awful of a shock. I still take a half hour to sip it, its become the replacement for my morning cup of coffee. I had another busy day that had me out of the house for 8 hours. I again did not prepare for this time away from home. I did drink 2 glasses of water while I was out, but this was not enough to quench my hunger. I only had time for 1 glass of lemonade after my salt water flush before I had to leave for the day. After my commitments, I had errands to run. When I finally got home at 8pm, I was ravenous. Knowing that it wouldn't be wise to drink all that lemonade before bed, I helped myself to solid food. This was a guilty delight. I had about 1 oz of smoked salmon (2 tbsps?), half a sprouted whole-grain tortilla, 2 tbsps hummus, a 2-inch square piece of cheese lasagna, 1/2 cup roast carrots with maple syrup and 1/2 cup vegan 'ice cream'.. I also had 3 cups of green tea. This was a guilty pleasure and I intend to get back on the boat tomorrow. Not longer after eating, I felt gassy. Thankfully I remembered that you NEVER PASS GAS when you're on this diet. Its going to be more than that.. I'll finish my night with my Smooth Move tea and get back on track tomorrow. To avoid this problem in the future though, I'm going to bring a lemon/cayenne/maple syrup concentrate and mix that with water as needed. I have a triple-header day on Saturday and 2 commitments on Sunday. I don't want those to end up like today. It will be interesting to see what effect that solid food has on me tomorrow.. I had awful insomnia - maybe this is related to my cheating.
Day 5 - Oh, I fell off the wagon. I'm going to finish the food in my fridge before it goes bad and start again on Monday.. BUT, I'll be eating vegan until then :)
The Master Cleanse Diet Journal - Take 2
Trying to make it through a full 10 days in a row this time!
Day 1 - I've got an interview next Thursday and a few auditions this week, so I decided to start up my cleanse again sooner than I was planning on it. The second time through (and being at home for the day) I found it very easy to complete a full day of the cleanse. The salt water flush didn't even seem as bad as it did the first time I did it. I really do feel good when I'm on the cleanse diet. When I ate food after a few days of cleansing, I felt SO heavy. I'm enjoying it more this time around. I did have stuff to do in the afternoon that had me out of the house for a while so I packed some lemonade to go As the diet specifies, I mixed 2 tbsp maple syrup and 2tbsp fresh squeezed lemon juice for each glass of lemonade I intended to have (you shouldn't premix to much as its not as effective the longer the lemon juice sits) and put that in a thermos. You're supposed to add the cayenne right at the time of mixing, otherwise it will mix with the lemonade and make it ultra-spicy, so I just brought my whole bottle of it along. I also brought a bottle of water, a drinking glass and measuring spoons. Whenever I got hungry, I'd mix 2 tbsp of concentrate, 1/10 tsp cayenne pepper and water in my drinking glass. This did let me deal with hunger and the temptation of driving past fast food restaurants or walking past food kiosks much better: I didn't cheat!
Day 2 - I didn't have time to do the salt water flush this morning, due to early commitments, nor will I be able to do it tomorrow. I stuck to things fairly easily today, without having too many food cravings. I did salivate though when someone brought a bag full of bagels with cream cheese into the salon where I was.. I considered giving up and stopping off for a snack on my way home, but I'm broke, so that question was easily solved. Also, the fact that I now know I can have unsweetened herbal tea throughout the day brightens my outlook. I really miss having a variety of tastes on this diet. I kinda miss a variety of textures too. And just the motions of chewing too! I'm already starting to plan for tomorrow morning though. As I have to wake up and start getting ready by 5am tomorrow, I'll probably get up at 3:30 to drink the salt water and then go back to bed for a half hour.
That didn't last long! Believe me, you need to plan ahead to do the Lemonade Master Cleanse!
Its Not Just Gas
Don't ever think you're just going to pass gas. Your colon has been flooded with salt water. Its going to come out. Get yourself to a toilet even if you don't think you need one!

Be sure to use organic lemons. You should drink the juice immediately after squeezing it for the enzymes to have their full effect in aiding your digestion. Also, do not refrigerate the lemons before using them. Leave as many lemons out on your counter to remain at room temperature as you think you'll need for the day. Use organic lemons: The taste is far superior and not bitter. The lemons should not be turning brown, as those will taste bitter. Roll the lemon between a hard surface and your palm in order to release more juice from it when squeezing. You will get your 2 tbsp. of lemon juice needed for the lemonade drink from approximately 1/2 a lemon. You may even want to invest in an electric citrus juicer to get the most lemon juice from your produce. Also, be sure not to use "Meyer Lemons' as they are not true lemons, but rather a hybrid of lemons and mandarin oranges.
Be sure to use organic, grade B syrup
Most of the popular brands of 'maple syrup' are not true maple syrup. They contain sweeteners, colorants, preservatives, etc... They're full of the toxins you're trying to rid yourself of! It is for this reason precisely that you need to use 2 tbsp. of organic grade B maple syrup for the cleanse. Organic means it is REAL maple syrup, free of any additional ingredients. Grade B is the most nutritious grade of maple syrup available. When limiting your diet as much as you do for the Master Cleanse, it is important to get all the nutrients possible from your maple syrup. In addition to supplying the calories your body needs to function, maple syrup provides additional vitamins, minerals and nutrients.
Why would you add cayenne to lemonade?
Cayenne pepper helps alkalize your body: You want to have an alkaline body for the greatest health. It raises the metabolism and makes delivery of nutrients more efficient as it thins the blood and speeds everything up. It assists the lemon and breaking up and freeing mucus in the body. Its very important that you spice up your lemonade with 1/10 tsp of cayenne pepper. Choose a pepper that is deep orange or red in color as this shows its freshness.
Questions I Have About The Master Cleanse
As I go through the Master Cleanse, I'm going to add questions that I have here. For someone who loves food and cooking as much as I do, its hard to just have one taste over and over, although I DO like the lemonade. Here are some questions (and answers to those questions) I have about the Master Cleanse diet. If they're not answered yet, it means I haven't found the answer yet.
- Is it OK to drink water if you're not near your lemonade? - Yes, you can drink all the water you want, just be sure you're drinking at least 6 - 8 glasses of lemonade daily in addition to this.
- Is it OK to drink unsweetened herbal tea during the day for variety? - YES. Be sure to take advantage of this if you're craving a new taste. Just be sure the ingredients are organic and contain nothing but leaves: no colorants, flavorings or other stuff! And no sweetener. Also, be sure you're drinking enough of your lemonade still.
- What should you do if you cheat and eat some solid food during your cleanse? -
- A criticism I've heard of the Master Cleanse is that you also empty the good bacteria from your bowels, along with all the toxins and built up waste. Can you take probiotic supplements, such as Kyo Dophilus, during the cleanse? -
