Natural Treatment for Acidosis

Updated on April 24, 2015

What is Acidosis?

Acidosis is an increased acidity in the blood marked by a drop below 7.35 from a normal range of 7.4-7.45 in your blood plasma pH. Changes in the pH of arterial blood outside this normal range of 7.35-7.45 result in disease causing cell damage.

The term acidosis is used to describe the processes leading to these states and many of the conditions are listed here:

Headache, fatigue, drowsiness, confusion, loss of consciousness, coma, seizures, muscle weakness, diarrhea, shortness of breath, coughing, arrhythmia, increased heart rate, nausea and vomiting. allergies, arthritis, cancer, candida, colitis, degenerative disease, diabetes, digestive problems, enzyme deficiency, fungus, heart burn, hormone imbalance, hypertension, insomnia , joint pain, kidney malfunction, liver problems, migraines, reduced vitamin and mineral absorption, muscle pain, obesity (maybe not a fat problem but an acid problem), osteoporosis, stones, stress, tiredness, ulcers, yeast infections.

Note: Fruity breath odor results from respiratory elimination of excess acetone and is a dangerous sign of extreme acidosis that can quickly lead to dehydration, coma and death.

What is the pH of your urine?

pH test strips

Knowing the pH of your urine may be more important to your current health situation than you are presently aware.

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with numbers below 7 being acidic (low on oxygen) and numbers above 7 being alkaline. An acidic body is a sickness magnet! What you eat, drink, and ingest will impact where your body's pH level falls, emotional stress factors are also likely to affect your pH.

The acid/alkaline balance of our body, its fluids and cells, is the MOST important balancing act our body has to perform. Our body's ideal pH is in the range of 7.4 and is currently detected via blood from our arteries. Since arterial blood tests are difficult to obtain and monitor some practitioners suggest testing the pH of your urine which can give some indication of chronic acidity. If your urine is highly acidic throughout the day, chances are that your system is highly acidic and you are on your way to developing acid related diseases and conditions like arthritis.

Your urine pH will change throughout the day and will likely be more acidic first thing in the morning; your organs work through the night cleaning your cells and then eliminating excess acids in your first urination of the day. For this reason practitioners recommend testing your second urination with pH test strips since it is likely to be a more accurate reading of your urine pH status.

Once you identify that you have acidic urine the goal is to bring it back into balance. Logic stands to reason that if you can eliminate a build up of acid from your system your urine will become more alkaline and this should also help bring acidic blood back into balance resulting in diminishing symptoms of Acidosis.

Dr. William Howard Hay

New York University School of Medicine, 1891

Dr. William Howard Hay, in his book A New Health Era (1939) is quoted as saying "the most fundamental cause of disease, i.e. the accumulation of excess acid in the body (acidosis), occurs when the body's intake and production of acid residue exceeds its ability to adequately eliminate it. This occurs primarily as a result of unwise food choices, improper food combining, and consumption of chemical food additives and drugs."

What the body wants to do is eliminate this excess acid. Every molecule of acid needs to exit the body through the kidneys, but, it requires "an escort" and that escort has to be a mineral. If there are no minerals available, the body has few choices, one is to deplete the stores of minerals you have in your bones (for example) and the result is Osteoporosis. One of the other options the body has is to store it away by creating "fat cells" with which to keep this excess acid from negatively affecting the pH of the blood. The body is also forced to "hide" the acid in joints or muscle tissue etc. resulting in a myriad of maladies, aches, and pains.

What is the solution?

Treatment Acidosis

The great thing to note here is that the solution is TOTALLY in your control! It is not complicated and the results will be experienced generally within a week...many people notice a significant improvement in as little as three days.

There are three great options, which can be utilized individually, as a whole, or any combination of the three. Choose where you want to start and then just go for it!

How to correct your pH. Step 1

Do a kidney cleanse

An unhealthy and stressful lifestyle can affect your adrenal glands which control your kidneys. Once your kidneys stop filter your blood properly then you start to head towards chronic fatigue just like an overworked muscle full of lactic acid. A kidney cleanse will help unblock any build up including sandy sediment, mucus strands and even break down stones so you can pass them without too much discomfort. If you have chronic low back pain your kidneys may already be suffering and you should combine this treatment with step 2.

How to correct your pH. Step 2

#2~ Sweat it out! The skin is the largest organ and functions like a 3rd kidney. Exercise will make you sweat but if you are already suffering from fatigue then it isn't a practical solution so what do you do? Use an infrared sauna to sweat out the acids and toxins that have built up due to sluggish kidneys. Work your way up to one hour a day then even twice a day until you start to feel better. Your towel and shorts may smell like ammonia after a good sauna, keep drinking pure water and using your sauna daily until the smell starts to fade away. You will notice your pain does too! Don't be surprised if you start losing lots of weight because it is possible that the body uses fat to store acids which can imbalance the blood. Once the acid is gone there is no need for extra fat storage.

Infrared saunas can plug right into a dedicated household plug and require no plumbing. Set-up can take as little as 1 hour with two people. You can order a single or double size with colour light therapy and speakers so you can listen to some relaxing music. Some people hang a small tablet inside to watch their favorite shows or health videos on youtube.

How to correct your pH. Step 3

pH Diet and Lifestyle

The third suggestion is the most dramatic, yet highly effective, and that is to totally change your diet! The typical Western diet tends to be high in acid forming foods such as: excess animal protein, dairy products, highly processed grains, jugs of coffee, overabundance of alcohol, artificial sweeteners, highly processed, deep fried, fast foods and fatty foods. The ideal diet to balance your pH would be high in alkaline forming foods such as organ meats, bone broths, plus fresh fruits and vegetables.

You may also consider adding alfalfa powder to your diet. Alfalfa "the father of foods" will infuse your body with much needed nutrient rich fuel, loaded with natural minerals and vitamins that your body will use to usher out the previously stored acids, and empower your cells to start the clean up job that can result in robust health. Alfalfa is a long term crop which is not replanted every year its roots grow deeper every year and because of how it grows it is more mineral rich than other green powders because it reaches deep into the ground - up to 100 feet deep to grab the minerals your body needs. Most commercial products are made with surface grown or hydroponic sprouts which leaves your body desperately wanting more minerals so it can use them to escort out the acid build-up in your body..

This daily addition of Alfalfa works extremely well in combination with steps 1 and 2.

Best wishes on your journey towards a balanced pH and excellent health. You can help spread the word by sharing this article with friend.

Love this lens. I put one up on pH and the alkaline diet some time ago and find that it gets a fair amount of traffic. I'd love to put a link to your lens into mine since you have so much more information than I do on the subject. Great job!

Our lifestyle is becoming more and more acidic. I believe proper diet can be of great help.

@anonymous: Hi Chris, I would say that it absolutely would. You can verify that by using the test strips before and after you try it. I wish you good health.

I found out that my acidosis was caused by the water I was drinking! I couldn't believe it! I actually thought I had Fibromyalgia - thankfully I was able to reverse the problem. I wrote a lens called Fibromyalgia or Chronic Mild Acidosis to tell me story!

I didn't know about this, thank you for the detail. I've got a lens educating people about cystic fibrosis and wanted to get an idea about this illness.
