wakeuptomenopause

Updated on April 24, 2009

Wake up please

I am writing about a topic about which there is complete ignorance among women across the world and people in general. It is that period of a woman’s life when her reproductive cycles come to a complete halt. Any wild guesses? Its menopause!

What is menopause? It refers to the complete halt of menstruation between 40 and 50 years. While women all over the world experience menopause around 45 years, Indian women experience it around 44 years to be precise. Now what is menstruation? It is a regular discharge of blood and mucosal tissue.

There are many symptoms, some of which are given below

Hot flashes/flushes, which is a feeling of extreme heat; sometimes cold flushes

Sweating in the night

Hardening of the arteries

Migraine

Increased urgency and frequency in urine

Fatigue

Memory loss

Back pain

Anxiety

I have listed the symptoms which I have seen and heard about. It is important to note these symptoms will vary for every woman.

Many women experience these symptoms without understanding that that are going through menopause! Even the family members are caught unaware and think that something strange is happening and leave the woman alone. It is this time which is absolutely crucial for the family to support her. And sadly the woman thinks she’s suffering from some heart ailment!

I have written this primarily with the aim to create more awareness among everyone, especially women in their 40’s…..because its only wisdom after all that will banish ignorance, isn’t it?
