10 Places to Visit During the Memorial Day
The Memorial Day commences every year on the last Monday of May in remembrance of US soldiers who laid their life while serving the country and fighting for dignity and justice. Americans decorate the memorials, cemeteries and pray for them. It all began as a Decoration Day after the Civil War and was held at different dates at various places all over the country. It later evolved to its current form after the Uniform Monday Holiday Act passed by Congress in 1968 which came into effect from 1971.
These are some of the places you can visit during this year’s Memorial Day:
- New York City:
Can see Ships parade, Musical performances and various competitions by sailors by arranging a tour ships at harbor. You can also include the events at Big Apple in your list.
- SouthEast US:
There are many events, over a dozen to choose from. Such as free firework display and an Outdoor concert in Vienna, Virginia. Freedom Weekend Aloft in South Carolina at affordable price. - Seattle, WA:
The giant Northwest Folklife Festival with loud music and of course dance for over 25 stages and also other places. Lot of art, craft and food available where entry is free.
- San Francisco:
Known for its traditional Memorial Day events. The observance at USS San Francisco Memorial, the Presidio parade and Tourists place Fisherman's Wharf WWII submarine the USS Pampanito all are major events. You can also visit Grand Parade and Carnival San Francisco Festival.
- Washington, DC :
National Memorial Day Concert: The concert is at West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol and free for all. The music is by National Symphony Orchestra and features actors Gary Sinise, Joe Mantegna and other guest artists.
Washington, DC : National Memorial Day Parade: Representative from all 50 states of Veterans with live marching bands. Begins from Constitution Avenue and 7th Streets, NW and follows the Constitution Avenue, passing the White House and ends at 17th Street. This parade is sponsored by the Veterans Committee of World War II that showcases helium-filled balloons along with patriotic floats.
- Rolling Thunder Motorcycle
Rally on Sunday may 26 will begin from Pentagon.
- The Buffalo Thunder Memorial
Motorcycle Ride begins at Sears and ends at 1925 Vermont Ave NW in Washington DC.
- The observations, wreath laying ceremony followed by concerts are held at Arlington National Cemetery, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Navy Memorial, Air Force Memorial and World War II Memorial. All the three forces take part actively and activities mostly include the national invocation, anthem, speeches, and the sounding of Taps.
The Memorial Day events are held all over the country. Some of famous ones are Hometown Holidays, Chestertown Tea Party Festival, Viva Vienna, Wolf Trap National Park, Falls Church Memorial Day Parade and Delaplane Strawberry Festival. Most of them include music, parade and children entertainment. Some or the other events are included such as cocktail party, street performances, raft race, colonial crafts, strolling musicians, local fare and much more.
