40th Birthday Gifts For Men

Updated on April 5, 2013

Buying A 40th Birthday Gift

Buying presents for that new 40 year old fella in your life can be a sensitive situation. By the time most guys get to that age, birthdays are becoming a non event. At least that's what they'll have you believe. Do they really mean it when they say they don't want a big 40th birthday surprise party, or is that just a front? Does forty seem really dreadful, or are they just pretending that it is? Maybe their pretending that it isn't. While no one can really know for sure, except the birthday boy himself, where I may be able to help out, is what to get the new "39 years old and holding" man as a gift. Parties we may not be all keen on, but everyone loves a present.

1970 Time Capsule

Unique 40th Birthday Gift Package

Wouldn't it be cool to get a gift for your 40th, that's funny, nostalgic, and a great conversation piece. This is a gift that's sure to conjure up plenty of memories from your "glory days". While you may have just been a child the day these items were so iconic, I'm quite sure you'll remember them all, and get quite a kick out of them. A mood ring, old report cards, some 1970 trivia playing cards and even a Slinky are just a few of the items in here.

Forty Things to Do When You Turn Forty:

Forty Experts on the Subject of Turning Forty

This one is a bit more serious, but not too much. Pretty practical as well, with advice on health, wealth, fitness, and business. It's a collection of several essays for 40 different authors, with different areas of expertise, that have made it to the great age of 40. There are several thought provoking essays, on the virtues, tribulations, and pitfalls of turning 40, as well as a number of essays that will totally crack you up.

You Know You're 40 When...

Just in case your special 40 year old forgets their turning 40, this should serve to remind them. They'll love you for that. Well, maybe not, but they will get a good chuckle once they've read a few pages. Anybody who's about to turn 40 should after all be familiar with a few of the following: comb-overs, that babysitter you under-paid is now over charging you as a lawyer, aches and pains that remind you your not 20 anymore, and how a party that makes it to midnight is really really late.

40th Birthday Gift Box Peace & Love Retro Candy- Jr.

Here's a great birthday gift for your favorite 40 year old sweet tooth. All the great candy from back in the day, that put your dentists kids through college. Some of it is still around today, like Sweet Tarts, Tootsie Rolls, and Chiclets. But there'll be plenty in their even your kids have never heard of like Lotz, and Candy Cigarettes. Just make sure, they don't get their hands on it, or you'll be paying for their dentists kids college education ;)

40th Birthday Gag Gift Mug

For that forty year old coffee drinker that sill has a sense of humor. I know there are still a few of them around. I'm over 40 and still have a sense of humor. It's kind of a unique mug, with the question mark handle that will be kind of fun to receive. Combine with a package of their favorite brand of coffee, and I'm sure they'll forgive you for the little dig.

How To Survive Your 40Th Birthday

How To Survive Your 40Th Birthday:

The Complete Guide to Getting the Care You Need--And Avoiding Problems You Don't

So, your favorite 39 year old is about to hit the big forty milestone, and they're scared silly. What they really need, is for their best friend to make fun of them. This book is the perfect ingredient for just such a plan. Who knows, as a side effect, it may just cheer them out of their old age funk, and allow them to enjoy their last few days as part of the thirty something crowd. After reading this book anyone should know how to survive 40th birthday parties, a mid life crisis, raising a family, high blood pressure, losing your youth, and high school reunions. If the book doesn't cheer them up, you could let them know that on the plus side, they're that much closer to learning that age old question . . . what happens after death?

Forty Reasons Why Life Is More Fun After The Big 40

Forty Reasons Why Life Is More Fun After The Big 40

If you know someone about to turn forty, that's filled with dread, this is just the gift for them. It's all about perspective folks, and this book has plenty of it. Some of the best reasons for turning 40 include the following:

- Learn how to prove to your teenager that 40+ adults are far more fun and interesting

- How cultivating thinning hair can actually help you save money

- Your now old enough to forgot all those horrible memories from high school without even trying

- Everyone expects you to look your age anyway . . . don't fight it

- No need for an alarm clock, since you can't sleep anyway

Billboard Top Rock & Roll Hits:

This is a great collection of songs, I think I'll order this one for myself. It's amazing, that I can hum and sing the words to everyone of these songs, even though I was only seven years old when they came out. I think I'll order this one for myself. It's not just for 40 year olds you know.

1. Venus - Shocking Blue

2. Mama Told Me (Not to Come) - Three Dog Night

3. I Think I Love You - The Partridge Family

4. Tears of a Clown - Smokey Robinson & the Miracles

5. Rapper - The Jaggerz

6. I Want You Back - The Jackson 5

7. Spirit in the Sky - Norman Greenbaum

8. Vehicle - The Ides of March

9. War - Edwin Starr

10. Green-Eyed Lady - Sugarloaf

1970 Time Passages Yearbook

Commemorative 40th Birthday or Anniversary Gift

This book is a great stroll down memory lane, for anyone who was a child of the sixties or seventies. It's about the size of a real old record label. It's stock full of the big pop culture of 1970 like songs, TV shows, movies, sporting events, fashions, advertisements and other notable events. It's laid out in a calendar format, so it's easy to find out all the events that happened around their birthday.

Really Cool 40 Year Old T-Shirt

Fun and Festive 40th Birthday Gift

Do you know a 40 year old that's brave enough to wear this shirt. Ya gotta be a little cocky to pull this one off? Usually by the time you get to this age, you don't care much what anyone thinks of your clothes . . . at least if your a guy. I'd wear it, but then again, no one ever accuses me of having good fashion sense. Certainly not my wife. I do have the shirt with an old sailor on it, that says "Old Guys Rule", which I got shortly after I turned 40. I have the sailboat that goes with it as well.

40 Years to Look This Good Mug

40th Birthday Gag Gift Set

Here's a good 40 year old coffee drinker mug, that actually comes with the coffee needed to keep a 40 year old awake. Their bound to appreciate the thoughtfulness in that sediment.

* The 40 Years to Look Good Coffee Mug Gift Set is a funny over the hill 40th birthday gift.

* It reads: "It took me 40 years to look this good."

* The gift set includes the mug and two packages of gourmet coffee - 1 Breakfast Blend and 1 flavored coffee.

* Each pack makes 8-10 cups of delicious coffee.

* Size: Standard Size Coffee Mug; Other: This item comes wrapped in cellophane with a bow - no wrapping required.

40th Birthday Gifts For Men

Something special for someone special

One thing to think about, is what interests, hobbies, and past times does Mr-Soon-To-Be-Fourty enjoy? This is usually not to hard to figure out, as it's all the stuff he spends his time doing, when he should be cutting the lawn, doing the taxes, or taking out the trash. You could go for a Super Bowl gift basket if he's a football fan. If he's a big coffee drinker, then how about a starbucks gift card. Even if he doesn't have a lot of extra circular activities, think about all the things he's talked about doing, but never seems to find the time to do. I always talked about scuba diving, but never really got around to doing it, until my wife signed me up for a scuba diving course one Christmas. Just before our winter vacation to Aruba. I did my classroom time in the great frozen north of Canada, and my open water dives in the 80 degree Caribbean waters of Aruba. One of the best gifts I ever received. Better than getting a BlackBerry car charger ;)

But, then again you know what? Maybe he really does want a big 40th birthday bash with a couple hundred or so of his closest friends. Even if he has said no a couple hundred times already, he will ultimately forgive you for showering him with so much attention, fun, and friends. Birthday parties (especially for old guys) are a ton of work, and only a total jerk wouldn't recognize and appreciate that after the fact. Go ahead, what's the worst that could happen.

If your a little unsure about a traditional party, there are a few alternatives. If he's a gambling man, how about a casino themed party. If there's a casino close by your neck of the woods, then this gets really easy. One not take him, and a dozen or so close friends for an evening or even weekend at the casino. There seems to be casinos all over the place these days, so finding one close shouldn't be too hard. A weekend full of black jack, roulette, slots, and Texas hold-em is many a guys dream. Of course, if you really want to splurge, send the whole gang to Vegas or Atlantic City. Be sure to get him a cheap wakeboards if there's a beach involved.

If you do opt for the gift as opposed to the party, don't go cheap. If there's one gift he should always remember, it's the one he got for his 40th. Unless of course you've got some reason to really annoy him. In that case, go for that tie or sweater you know he'll never wear. No need in saving those Christmas gifts for a special occasion.

Well, of course I would be negligent, if I didn't mention that tired old cliché, "It's the thought that counts". Of course nothing could be truer, and the fact that your brave enough to traipse around the internet looking for that perfect gift, does mean you given this lots of thought. And, whether that guy is your dad, husband, brother, or best mate, he's sure to appreciate the care you've put into celebrating his big 4-O. Believe it or not, guys are really not thoughtless jerks, we do notice the little stuff. We just don't like everyone to realize we do. Even if you went the gift baskets for men route, we'd still notice. With that in mind, here's a few great gift ideas you should consider.

So, go ahead and be honest. We don't always get what we want, and sometimes we make bad decisions when it comes to gift giving. I'd love to hear from you and your experiences.

We're actually headed to a 40th Birthday this coming weekend. Theme is 'Tigers'. What this means is we'll find some kind of tiger themed memorabilia (maybe just a tiger touque) to make it more of a memory than a gift that gets forgotten in a month or two. Make your gift memorable!

I'm about to turn 40. If my wife gets me any of these I'd be disappointed. Get me a gift card to an electronics store, done. Or a 24 of beer. Or a great bottle of something from the wine store. Or tickets to an NFL game. Don't think for a minute guys want a mug. That's propaganda for someone's lame website.
