4 Gift Ideas for a Co-Worker or Someone You Don't Know Well and 2 Gift Ideas You Want To Avoid

Updated on August 21, 2019

The best gift idea is always a personal one. Even if you can vaguely find something that matches a hobby or interest of the person you are buying for it shows that you are thoughtful and listen. But lets be real. There are going to be times when you are going to shop for someone and know little to nothing about them. It is at this point you will need to wing it and buy something that anyone can be appreciated. Here are some ideas of where to get started when you are shopping for someone you barely know.

Gift Card

The gift card is the go-to gift when you have no idea what to get someone. There is lots of variety and there are lots of gift cards that are good in-case-of-emergency gift ideas that are good to get for anyone. You can buy a gift card to the movies, this is something that almost everyone does and it leaves it up to them to pick what they see. There is always a Starbucks card or a card to a popular restaurant, people always need to eat and drink. There is also the option for a gas card if they drive or a mall in the area (they have to find something they like in the mall).

Make sure you get a nice small card with it to so you can put it in something and write their name on it.

A Book Of The Field You Are In

If this is a good idea for a co-worker or you know the field of the person you are buying for you can always buy them a book in the area of their profession. There are literally books on every subject and no matter where the person works you can easily find a book on Amazon to order that will fit their job. From finance to cooking to retail to teaching there is a book on it. This gift also comes with the benefit that it is more personal than a gift card and says you at least know where this person works.

And yes you guessed it, add a small card. That's just add that for every gift and save us time.

A High End Box Of Assorted Chocolates

Who doesn't like chocolate? Stick a higher end brand for this one and go with a box that has an assortment, this way hopefully they can find at least one flavour that they like. Obviously avoid anything that is hear-shaped or romantic and just buy a rectangular box of different chocolate choices.

An Accessory Like A Hat Or Tie

You do want try to guess anyone's size or style but a tie or scarf is a nice option to buy for someone you have no other ideas for. As long as you have seen this person once or twice you have a vague idea of what they wear and picking an accessory that goes with that isn't that hard. For a person who wears suits and ties you can go with the tie option which can go high end or be inexpensive. And if you live in a colder city a hat or scarf is always a good idea.

Unless you are someone's grandmother do not give them cash. There is nothing more impersonal than cash and giving it to a co-worker is just odd. Cash is only a gift for a family member, and even then, only from one you are very comfortable with. Go with an Amazon gift card or even a Visa one if you are absolutely stuck on this.

I know a lot of people buy a bottle of wine and it can be a classy gift. But if you really do not know the person this one gift you might want to avoid. You never know someone's history with drinking and there is a chance they can be in AA. Not everyone is a drinker and if you are going with someone generic than a gift card or chocolates is a much safer option.

And in conclusion always add a nice well-written card. It can mean more than the gift itself.
