Each of these gifts are something that I would absolutely love to have as somebody who's trying to lose weight myself. I've included them on this list in the hopes that my family might see them (hint hint hint) and find it in their heart to provide me with some of the things I'd like to have, or that maybe something here will inspire you to choose something for your own friends and family!
Either way, the fitness freaks you're shopping for will love the gifts on this list any season of the year!
Choosing the Right Gift for a Fitness Buff
I've mentioned before in my guide to gifts for book lovers that it's important to know the person you're buying a gift for. Hopefully you already know them pretty well! The idea is to start out knowing why your favorite fitness buff practices good fitness. Is it because she's trying to lose weight? Is he trying to maintain his body? Is health a major concern?
The reasons that your fitness buff works out and eats right will have a huge effect on which gifts are most appropriate for them.
For example, I'm working on eating right and getting active because I want to become stronger and enjoy improved health, well-being, and longevity. Of all of the items on the list below, the Fitbit is at the top of my list, because I need something that will help me to keep track and to keep me motivated to keep working on losing weight.
What are your reasons for getting/staying fit?
The Aria works with your Fitbit and tracks your progress online. This scale would make a great gift in addition to a Fitbit system! Some users have reported that the body fat % may be inaccurate, however, so consider this when making a purchase, especially during a gift-giving season.
A Digital Scale Makes a Great Gift for People Losing Weight!
If you know somebody who's trying to lose (or for that matter, gain) weight, a digital scale can make a great gift. I don't actually have one of these right now, and it would be incredibly helpful to aid me in tracking my progress.
Try to find something that will track your friend or family member's progress. I once owned a scale that could be set for up to four different people to track how much weight they had gained or lost.
Scales are becoming increasingly more advanced. The one shown to the right will track your progress online and works with Fitbit!
Tips for Choosing a Scale
If you plan on giving a scale as a gift, the main consideration you need to have is whether or not the scale is going to be accurate. I recommend buying online from a site such as Amazon and browsing through the reviews of the product to ensure that people are noting that the scale is accurate for the reviewers. You don't want to give a gift that needs to be calibrated and recalibrated in order to work properly.
Even a basic scale can be a good gift if you know that the person you're buying for wants to lose or gain weight. Never presume, as this could make an otherwise great gift insensitive and cause hurt to your recipient.
Look for the following things when choosing a scale:
- Do reviews state that it's accurate?
- Does it need calibration?
- Can it track weight loss/gain?
- What are the features?
- At what weight is it accurate/inaccurate?
Some scales stop being accurate after three hundred pounds (a problem I had while I was still over 300 pounds!) so make sure that you know what the needs of your recipient are and where the scale is accurate!
The Fitbit tracks steps, sleep, stairs climbed, and your heart rate, making it easy to set goals and keep track of progress with the device. However, some users have reported inaccuracy. Fitbit appears to be working on these issues. For the price, it is a good device!
Fitness Trackers can Help your Favorite Fitness Freak Monitor Progress
Of all of the things that I would like to receive for this holiday, the one at the top of my list is the Fitbit fitness tracker. I've often used pedometers in the past, but the inexpensive ones result in clips falling loose and then becoming lost.
Since changing my own lifestyle, the thing that has affected me the most is sleep, and that's one of the things that makes me so eager to get my hands on a Fitbit, since it tracks so much information, and I've been wanting a heart rate monitor for some time.
According to reviews, some users have experienced inaccuracies with the Fitbit system and have found better results with the . If you are at all unsure and your budget allows it, you may wish to purchase the Polar instead. Polar Sports Watch
Tips for Choosing a Fitness Tracker
Good fitness tracker should track your steps and your heart rate at the minimum, and it should allow you to set goals by plugging into an app on your computer or phone as well. These are some of the most important consider when purchasing a system for someone that you love.
- Consider the reviews for whether or not the device is usually accurate.
- Purchase the best system that fits your budget (your recipient will thank you!).
- Choose something that connects to fitness apps.
Gifts for Different Types of Fitness Buffs
Blender or Juicer
The Hurom Slow Juicer receives excellent reviews on Amazon, and this is a product that I would absolutely love to have! Juicing is an excellent way to get the necessary nutrients out of the food, and the fitness buff on your shopping list is sure to love this juicer!
A Juicer Makes a Great Gift for Health-Conscious Friends
A few months ago I sat with my husband and watched a documentary called . If you haven't watched it yet, I highly recommend this film, because it changed the way that I thought about food, and it inspired me in a way that I didn't think possible. The man who produced the documentary cured an autoimmune disease with food, rebooted his system, and lost significant weight through the nutrients he got from juiced foods. Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead
Since then, I've wanted to try juicing. I've spoken to my doctor at the hospital about the possibilities, and juicing can be nutritionally sound as long as you ensure that you're getting enough protein into your diet.
A juicer would make a great gift for someone who wants to try a juice fast (short or long term) and is serious about learning how to manage better nutrition.
The Hurom Slow Juicer listed to the right is highly rated on Amazon, and the majority of the poor reviews cite poor customer service as the reason for the review (thus reviewing the service and not the product. The slow juicing process is believed to get more nutrients out of the food than a faster system.
Tips for Choosing a Juicer
The key with a juicer is to find one that's going to be able to stand up to a lot of use and which will extract all of the nutrients out of the food while leaving behind as little pulp as possible. Organic food can be expensive (in , one of the participants was spending more than $30 a day on fresh greens to juice), and so you want to make sure that it's a high quality juicer that will make the most out of the money your recipient is spending on healthy food. the sequel to the aforementioned documentary
- Consider whether or not the juicer will stand up to wear.
- Read reviews to discover what users' experiences were with the juicing process.
- Decide whether you want a slow juicer or a quick juicer.
Now for the Fun Stuff for Fitness Freaks
Getting and Staying Fit is always easier if you're staying fit with toys. No matter what the age of the person you're shopping for, fun fitness equipment is sure to go the distance in keeping your friend or family member motivated! These are some of my favorite items that I've found on Amazon, either things that I own or would like to own.
Use your imagination! If your fit friend enjoys a spin class, you might consider a , or if she enjoys dance, maybe a mountain bike that will protect her feet and grip the floor will do the trick. pair of grip socks
I've made a few suggestions of things that are on my wishlist below.
The Indo Board will Help Your Favorite Fitness Freak Improve Balance, Stability and Core Strength
Top rated on Amazon, the Indo Board is an excellent balance trainer that boarders are sure to love, especially those living in colder climates where it may be more difficult to get out to board in the winter!
One item I would love to have as I improve my general health is an Indo Board. I've been looking at these for quite some time because I need to improve my balance (which used to be quite good but has gone downhill in the past several years) and because of its effect on core strength.
If the person you're shopping for wants to develop increased strength and balance -- or if he's a boarder of any type (surfboard of skateboard) then the Indo Board might make a great gift!
This is a good gift for people who already have some level of fitness, as it does require some core strength and balance to get started. It would make a fun gift for someone who wants something to add excitement to their normal fitness routine!
The Trikke is More than Fitness Equipment: It's a Green Vehicle, too!
This highly-rated carving vehicle is my dream fitness machine. The version shown here is one of the more recent, and previous incarnations are priced lower for those with smaller budgets.
If you know me, you know that I don't buy into the "Green" movement, and that I love motor-powered vehicles (even if I'd prefer to ride a horse, I do not prefer a bicycle).
I discovered the Trikke a couple of years ago on Amazon while looking for fitness equipment, and I fell in love with the idea of the Trikke.
Now I've never had a chance to ride one of these devices, and I think that at my current weight it wouldn't be advised, but this is the sort of equipment that I dream about. It's highly rated on Amazon and acts both as a vehicle and as sports equipment. This machine will work your entire body while you have incredible fun in the process.
If there is one thing on this list that I want more than the others, this is the machine!
Make sure to purchase the hoop in the right size and weight for your height, fitness level, and experience level with hooping.
Hula Hoops Make Hypnotic Gifts for Hip Hoopers
I thought I'd try out a bit more alliteration there. Like it? It's catchier than Fantastic Gifts for Fitness Freaks, isn't it? Maybe I'll use it for a new Hub.
This is one piece of fitness equipment that I have actual, first-hand experience with. Personally, I love hula hoops. I'm terrible at keeping them up, but I'm still working on it. Most of it's the coordination, which is explained well in the videos that my girlfriend got for me for my birthday in July. Hoopnotica
Warning: Hula Hoops are addictive and collectible. Like potato chips, you cannot have just one. I have Hoopnotica's travel hoop and I absolutely love it, but have had other hoops in the past as well. They can be found on Etsy, Ebay, and Amazon, and you should be careful to buy a weighted hoop (especially if you're a beginner) and I do not recommend purchasing a massage hoop.
Makes sure to purchase a hoop the right size for you. I've included a sizing video below.
