60th Birthday Gift Ideas

Updated on February 22, 2016

60th Birthday Gift Ideas

My parents have both turned 60 in the past few years so I've been there when it comes to shopping for 60th birthday gifts.

You'll find some ideas on this page that are not terribly expensive but are thoughtful.

Turning 60 is a huge milestone, and I like the idea of getting them something to do with the year they were born or something they are nostalgic about from their childhood like movies or music!

If you can't find the perfect gift you could get them a wallet and put 60 one dollar bills in it, or perhaps a $60 Gift Certificate.

Music from the Year You were Born

America's Greatest Hits 1956

A CD with music from your birth year makes for an interesting gift because these were the songs popular when you were born, so you may not have necessarily heard all of them before and it will might make you think "Wow, I'm that OLD if they played this music the year I was born?!"

For those born in 1956, the music from that year will most definitely seem pretty old and not like the 60s music they listened to as a teen, so to go along with music from this year, you will probably also want to get them some more music from the 60s.

Music from when they were Growing Up in the 60s! - Don't you just love oldies?

'60s Gold
'60s Gold

'60s Gold makes a great 60th birthday gift because someone born in the mid-fifties will probably enjoy 60s music.

The '60s Gold album has 40 songs total and I thought it was relatively inexpensive (at least it was as of this writing.)

If you are planning the party, instead of wrapping this up as a gift, you could play some 60s music and other music they like in the backround.

How about a Dr Seuss Book?

You're Only Old Once! is a Dr. Seuss book that's great for a 60th birthday gift as it has some rhyming fun about getting older.

This Dr. Seuss book is actually aimed at adults rather than children!

Book Gift Ideas

Besides the books below, you could look for a book that was originally published in the year they were born.

Old Yeller by Fred Gipson just happened to be published in 1956! That would go good with the Dr. Seuss book mentioned in the sidebar.

If that's not your style, look for other 1956 books instead if you are shopping for someone turning 60 in 2016!)

You might also get them a book they enjoyed when they were growing up.

What You Don't Know about Turning 60 - Funny, Possibly Offensive Book for Men Turning 60

What You Don't Know About Turning 60: A Funny Birthday Quiz
What You Don't Know About Turning 60: A Funny Birthday Quiz

This funny book for someone turning 60 is aimed at men and the humor in it is not for those easily offended.

Thankfully, you can use Amazon's "Look Inside" feature to see a few pages before you buy it so you can see for yourself if you think it would be too offensive for the 60th birthday guy.

The Ultimate Birthday Book - The New York Times Front Pages from their past birthdays

The Ultimate Birthday Book is a personalized hardbound book that has the New York Times front pages (reprints) from the past birthdays of the birthday person inside of it.

The book is also personalized with the birthday person's name in gold letters on the cover.

I would like to get this for my parents for their next milestone birthday as I missed it when they turned 60.

It would be a fun thing to look through together at their birthday party and would sure be a conversation piece after their birthday.

60th Birthday Book for Women - Books are awesome gifts!

Suddenly Sixty And Other Shocks Of Later Life (Judith Viorst's Decades)
Suddenly Sixty And Other Shocks Of Later Life (Judith Viorst's Decades)

This poetry book is aimed at women turning 60, but you might not want to get it for your mom or grandma.

If you use the "Look Inside" feature on Amazon you can read a few pages of it and you might see the poem "It's Harder to be Frisky Over Sixty." It is not that bad but definitely something I would feel weird about giving older relatives.

Maybe it is best if coming from one friend to another instead.

Movie Gifts

A movie from the year you were born makes an interesting birthday gift. Some movies that came out in 1956 are The Ten Commandments, Around the World in 80 Days, The King and I, and Love Me Tender.

In addition to a movie from their birth year, you could get them a movie they loved when they were growing up. I like getting people Disney movies they remember from childhood (if they are into Disney movies). Sleeping Beauty came out in 1959, Sword in the Stone came out in 1963, and Mary Poppins came out in 1964.

King and I, The Blu-ray Combo

My pick for a movie that came out in 1956 would be The King and I, starring Deborah Kerr and Yul Brynner.

60th Birthday Shirt - Made in 1956 - 60 Years Old!

The Made in 1956 - 60 Years Old! shirt pictured here is for those who were born in 1956 and are turning 60 in 2016.

It would go really well with the other gifts on this page like music from the year they were born, or a movie from the year they were born!

Birthday t-shirts also make nice gifts for people who have everything already and you aren't quite sure what to get them. I have some hard to shop for people in my family and they get a lot of t-shirts, candy, and sports related gifts!

Candy They Remember from Childhood - Gifts for their Sweet Tooth

Choward's Scented Chewing Gum, Uniquely Refreshing Flavor - 8 Tablets per Package, 24 Packages per Box
Choward's Scented Chewing Gum, Uniquely Refreshing Flavor - 8 Tablets per Package, 24 Packages per Box

How about some of their favorite candy or gum from when they were growing up, especially if it is one that is hard to find these days.

You could also give them an assortment of candy they enjoyed when they were growing up.

C Howard Gum is just one type of candy they might remember. It's got an interesting flavor that is different than most gum you can get these days.

Since I am turning 60 pretty soon, I was happy to scroll through your gifts for someone turning 60. I was OK with all of them, until I saw the Over the Hill....LOL don't think I want that one :) Better to keep thinking young :) *Blessed*

A great selection of thoughtful and meaningful gifts, any one of which I would love to receive on my 60th birthday. Now, if you can just tell me how to turn the clock back to my 60th birthday, that would be the greatest gift of all! :D (Not that I'd have all that far to go!)
