70th Birthday Gift Ideas

Updated on November 10, 2014

70th Birthday Gift Ideas

When my in-laws turned 70, I went through a lot of different gift options and you'll find some of these on this page.

My favorite gift for someone turning 70 is probably the Ultimate Birthday Book mentioned below. And if they are into oldies, I like getting them a CD with oldies on it to go along with some music from the year they were born.

The Ultimate Birthday Book

The Ultimate Birthday Book is a really cool book to get for someone's seventieth birthday because it will have the NYT front pages (reprints) from the person's birthdays throughout their life.

For someone turning 70, you will get your pages worth since you could also get this for someone turning 30 (or younger) for the same price and they would get less pages. Of course, you could wait until they turn 80 and they would get even more pages, but they will have more time to enjoy it if you get it for them when they hit 70.

A Book Too Risque for my 70 Year Old Mother In Law

I'm Too Young To Be Seventy (Judith Viorst's Decades)
I'm Too Young To Be Seventy (Judith Viorst's Decades)

We bought this book for my mother in law, but we ended up not giving it to her because I opened it and read something that was a little too risque to send to her.

This is a pretty popular book for people shopping for 70th birthday gifts, so beware that even though it gets many glowing reviews, you might want to think twice before sending it to your grandma or Mom, etc.

One thing in the table of contents says "Erotic Options" so keep that in mind before buying this book.

That being said, it can be a nice gift for the right person!

You're Only Old Once!: A Book for Obsolete Children

You have probably read Dr. Seuss books for children, but he wrote You're Only Old Once! for his 82nd birthday that relates to people getting older and makes a good birthday gift for 70 year olds.

Someone turning 70 might get a kick out of it with all the funny and rhyming medical tests being done in the book.

T-Shirt Gift Idea

Turning 70 is a huge milestone that is to be celebrated. 1944 was such a long time ago and those who turn 70 today have been through a lot since they were born.

Here is a cool Made in 1944 - 70 Years Old Shirt t-shirt for those who were born in 1944 and are turning 70 in 2014!

This shirt is unique in that it wouldn't be applicable for people turning 70 in other years besides this year, since those turning 70 next year and the years to come will not have been born in 1944.

The shirt is black with white lettering and uses an old fashioned looking font.

Music from the year they were born - Music was quite different 70 years ago

Hit Parade 1944
Hit Parade 1944

It's fun to give people a CD with music from the year they were born, though they might not know all the songs. Music sure has changed a lot in 70 years!

The CD pictured here has songs by Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Jo Stafford, and others.

Oldies but Goodies - Music They Loved Growing Up

It's fun to get them music from the year they were born, but you might want to also get them some music they remember. For those turning 70 in 2014, how about some oldies they would remember from when they were growing up?

Also, if you're planning the party, you might want to get some nostalgic music to play in the background.

Time Life: The Ultimate Oldies but Goodies Collection
Time Life: The Ultimate Oldies but Goodies Collection

The Ultimate Oldies but Goodies Collection has 3 CDs with '50s rock 'n' roll which includes classics and one-hit wonders. There are 45 songs in all.

Some of my favorites in this set are Please Mr. Postman, Hey! Baby , Take Good Care of My Baby, Love Potion No. 9 , Heartbreak Hotel , In the Still of the Night and Love Is Strange

Double Indemnity: A Movie from the Year they were Born (1944) - Pretty good movie!

Double Indemnity [Blu-ray]
Double Indemnity [Blu-ray]

This is a 70th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray for the black and white film noir movie starring Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck. He's an insurance salesman and goes crazy for a woman who wants his help to kill her mean husband, after getting life insurance for the husband of course. If the plan doesn't go just perfectly they will get definitely get caught because the insurance company hates paying out!

I was thinking that is probably how insurance companies work in real life-investigating claims with all their might so they don't have to pay. It was interesting because there was one insurance guy in the movie who was so good at figuring out if a claim was fraudulent or not and it stuck with me that he was a better investigator than police since police are not normally motivated by money to solve a case. Money really does motivate companies and people though!

I thought this was a good movie that moved along nicely and had some interesting twists. I didn't like that they left a little something to your imagination at the end, but the ending was okay.

More Movie Gift Ideas

Other movies that came out in 1944 include Going My Way starring Bing Crosby, Meet Me in St. Louis with Judy Garland.

For those turning 70 in 2015, a few movies that came out in their birth year (1945) are Bells of St. Mary's with Bing Crosy and Ingrid Bergman, The Lost Weekend (won an Academy Award for Best Picture), and Mildred Pierce with Joan Crawford.

Some Disney Movies they may remember nostalgically from childhood include Cinderella (1950), Alice in Wonderland (1951), Peter Pan (1953), 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), Lady and the Tramp (1955), and Old Yeller (1957).

1944 Trivia Playing Cards

Flickback 1944 Trivia Playing Cards: Birthday gift or

Trivia playing cards from the year someone was born make an interesting gift.

These are 52 card decks and you could play cards with them, but the cool part is that the cards have trivia questions on them about the year.

They might learn some things about their birth year they didn't know yet.

Retro Candy for 70th Birthdays

Candy was one of my favorite things when I was a kid, though I'm not going to be 70 anytime soon, but I do feel nostalgic about some of the candy I ate. My grandma really LOVES candy and I have probably given her quite a few candy gifts because that's the thing she loves most.

The 70th birthday person in 2014 may remember some candy from when they were a kid growing up in the 40s or 50s that can be found in retro candy gift boxes. With the gift box pictured here, you choose the decade you want the candy to be from.

70th Birthday Wine Glasses - a 70th birthday gift for women

70 & Sensational Bottom's Up Wine Glass
70 & Sensational Bottom's Up Wine Glass

This 70th Birthday Wine Glass is a nice birthday gift for women (maybe not so much for men since it looks pretty girly.)

It features the colors black and white like an over the hill gift might, but it does say 70 is Sensational and has purple swirl accents.

This would not only make a good present but would be cool for the birthday girl to drink from at her party and then take a picture of her with it.

I like the Ultimate Birthday Book the best. Another great idea, one that we had gotten my mother in law, was Johnny Carson DVDs.

Hi Fefe, I like what you've done, here:) I wanted to share with you the 70th birthday Idea I gave my mother last year: a two week trip around the USA to visit and say goodbye to her lifelong friends. We did this shorty after she was diagnosed with cancer (sorry, if that is too much information).

But I have to admit, it was the best thing I ever gave her for her birthday and was something she was able to enjoy for weeks... and, it gave me time to really get to know her better - as well as her friends... man, can the elderly throw a party!

Good luck to all who search for 70th presents... I would highly recommend time together as my favorite choice.

I guess the best gift can be celebrating the 70th birthday with the whole family and old friends because everyone is living in different places and they rarely have chance to see the ones they love all together.

I need a good idea for a gift to make for my dad who just celebrated his 69th birthday. I want to make it myself. I have all colors of hemp string, many trinkets, rocks and carved sticks/I just need an idea of what to make him...?
