80th Birthday Gift Ideas
80th Birthday Gift Ideas
One of the best 80th birthday gifts you could give someone turning 80 is to make them SMILE!
You can't really package up and wrap a smile. But you can get them an 80th birthday gift that will make them feel good!
The WORST 80th birthday gift ideas would be OVER THE HILL gag gifts that make them feel old. Like jokes about being bald, wearing adult diapers or dentures--seriously, do you want to make them DEPRESSED about turning 80?
The Best 80th Birthday Gift Ideas are a combination of the following:
- nostalgic - gifts from the year/time they were born or the time they were growing up
- thoughtful - more than just a gift card, please. Unless it's for $80 (a dollar for each year of their life)
- personalized - make it about them!
- affordable - in this economy, you still need to afford groceries after buying birthday gifts...
Inspirataional Book for 80 Year Olds
This is the inspirational biography of "the Iron Nun", Sister Madonna Buder, who was still running triathlons after she turned 80. I love stories like this where people who are older are still very active as I want to imagine I will be this way when I get older too.
Whether you are Catholic or not, and it doesn't really matter your age, I think you can be inspired by this woman. She really inspires me to think what's possible.
The Ultimate Birthday Book - The New York Times Front Pages from their Birthdays throughout their life.
The Ultimate Birthday Book is one of my favorite birthday gift ideas that I want to get for family and it would be a really cool gift for someone turning 80 because they would get a book containing New York Times reprints of front pages from their previous birthdays.
You can buy this for people of any age, but it seems if you get this for someone turning 80 you are getting more of your money's worth than someone turning 40 because you would get around twice as many pages.
This is an inspirational book written in 2007 about the lives of famous people in their 80s.
You'll learn about their life before and after they turned 80.
I think it would be good to lift the spirits of someone turning 80 and see that you can still be active into your 80s.
80th Birthday Gift Poll
How much do you want to spend on an 80th Birthday Gift?
Movie from 80 Years Ago (1935)
Those turning 80 would probably appreciate a movie from the year they were born. Mutiny on the Bounty is a sea adventure movie with superb acting from 1935 starring Charles Laughton, Clark Gable and Frank Lloyd. Anyway, it is one of the best movies from 1935.
Mutiny on the Bounty Trailer
This is a cool collector's edition of The Wizard of Oz. The movie originally came out in 1939, the year that someone born in 1935 would be turning 4. The movie was also re-released in 1949 when they were older as well so they might have seen it then.
I have seen this movie countless times, it's one of my favorites and it never gets old. I think that generations to come will still enjoy this movie since it is so timeless.
The person turning 80 might like a t-shirt about... turning 80 of course! The shirt pictured here says "Made in 1935" followed by "80 Years Old!"
If you don't want a black shirt, you can get it in a few other colors as well. The shirt is unique in that it's only applicable for those who are turning 80 in 2015.
It would be cool if the person turning 80 wore a shirt like this at their birthday party so you could get some good pictures of them.
American Experience: The 1930s - Nostalgic gift for people born in the 30s
Those born in the 1930s might enjoy a gift related to the decade they were born in.
I'm a big fan of PBS programs since they can be both entertaining and educational. This has 5 episodes from the PBS series about the '30s starting with the crash of 1929 to Seabiscuit. Also has "Surviving the Dust Bowl", Hoover Dam and "The Civilian Conservation Corps"
The Day You Were Born Birthday History Plaque
The Day You Were Born© Birthday History Plaque is something you can personalize with the 80th birthday boy or girl's name and date of birth.
It will then have information about the day / year they were born such as who the President/Vice President was, headline news, celebrities with the same birthday, and more.
This would go great with some of the gifts that have to do with the year they were born.
Music from the Year they were Born (1935)
How about some music related to the year they were born? For those turning eighty in 2015, they'd want some 1935 music. And then to go along with it, you may want to get them some music they'll remember from when they were growing up, like 30s music or 40s music, and perhaps they like 50s music too?
This is a actually greeting card itself with a 20 track CD containing 1935 songs.
Songs That Got Us Through WWII
Someone turning 80 probably remembers many of these songs from the World War II era. My favorite on here is probably Boggie Woogie Bugle Boy by Andrew Sisters. It is such a catchy upbeat song that just about everyone has heard.
Another song that might be familiar to people (not just those turning 80) is Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive by Johnny Mercer.
Not only would this make a good gift, but it would be fun to play it in the background at an 80th birthday party.
