Christmas Gifts for the Runner in Your Family

Every year everyone ponders the same questions about how to be creative when coming up with a quality Christmas gift for everyone on their list. It is especially difficult to come up with ideas for the people who already have EVERYTHING to do with their hobbies and interests. But this year, have no fear! For all of the runners on your list, I will provide you with a list of stocking stuffers and low, medium and high ranges of prices of gifts that will inspire someone to begin running or get them training for their next big run.

Stocking Stuffers

If you are looking for something to add some weight to your runner’s stocking, try adding a sports drink mix or running fuel such as Gu or PowerBar. Gu makes tablets, gels, brews for drinks, electrolyte tablets, etc. to help fuel your runner beyond a point they imagined in their training or in the next race. Another brand to try is PowerBar. PowerBar has energy bars, granola bars, gels, sports drink mixes, snacks and supplements that are sure to add a little variety to the usual stocking stuffers. You can go to either of those brands websites or click on the links for easy shopping!

Re-fueling while running is essential when you are a distance runner. After about 75 minutes of running, your body begins to wear down because it has used all of the stored glycogen and food that has been stored. To ensure that you keep your pace and beat your time on your last run or race, make sure to fuel up while you are running to push yourself past your best run.

Gift Certificates and Magazines for Inspiration

Another way to inspire the success of a runner is to give them a subscription to a running magazine, training website or sporting goods store. If you are going the sporting goods store route, check your credit card points to make sure that you can not just use your points towards a gift card. You can also buy them a book about increasing running potential or a how-to-train for your next 5k, 10k, or half/whole marathon.

It is important, if you are a runner, to find ways to improve your time per mile and increase your distance, but at times, everyone needs a little help or inspiration. If you invest in a book, magazine or training program that works for you, it can make all of the difference in the world when it comes time for your next big race.

Wishlist Items

A couple things that I hope to find in my stocking this year are pedometers, GPS watches, Bose headphones and anything that accessorizes any of the above! There are many different brands out there, but Garmin makes a great GPS watch that monitors your heart rate, pace and distance of your route. This is such a wonderful item to have when training to track your progress. The wonderful thing about getting a GPS watch is that you can wear the device, it is lightweight, and you do not have to worry about holding or dropping it while you run. I often use my GPS device on my phone, but it is much more convenient to not have to hold something while you run.

If you are going to have a really successful run (my opinion only), you need to have great tunes and a great way to listen to them. Consider giving an ITunes gift card, Amazon gift card for music, an Ipod or any other kind of MP3 player to get your runner moving. Once they have the gear and the tunes, all they need is the right set of headphones to listen to their new running mix. Bose makes many amazing products and I absolutely LOVE their audio headphones (see Amazon links to the right).

Runner's Gift Basket/Stocking

If you like all of these ideas, but are still looking for a few more, try putting together a set of gifts that reflect the running theme. Put some running socks, reflective night running gear, sunscreen for the day running, Nike shoe inserts, pepper spray for safety and gift cards to get new shoes and running gear in a stocking or gift basket. Gear and shoes are very taste specific, because most runners have gear that they favor more than others due to comfort preference and ease of running. If you do opt to gift them some running clothes, make sure that you include a gift receipt so that they can return them if the sizes or styles differ from their preferences.

No matter what your runner's tastes are, you are sure to find something in these suggestions that will get them on the road or trail. Happy shopping!
