A Runners Christmas Wishlist: Runner Gifts for 2014
Christmas Wish List: Gifts for the Runner in Your Life
With Christmas just around the corner, it's time to start brainstorming gifts for the people in your life. If you have friends and family members who are into running, why not get them something on their Christmas wish list? I've been a runner for the last 25 years and I've gotten into half marathon training only in the past 5 years. All the gear associated with running can be quite overwhelming and sometimes unnecessary, but there are certainly a handful of must-have items that every runner needs. An example of a must-have running accessory: every long distance runner needs a proper water/fluid holding device, whether it be a runners backpack, a fanny pack or a handheld prop. Sometimes a running training route takes you miles away from an adequate water source and we all know that our bodies need to be properly hydrated.
I will be going through and reviewing must-have running accessories that will help and transform the runners in your life. If you're a runner yourself, use this list to inspire your own Christmas wish list.
Gift Ideas for Runners
The thing about long distance running is that you don't need many running accessories to be successful; however, some running accessories will help motivate you to run faster and longer and feel better too. Let's brainstorm for a moment about the must-haves that all long distance runners need to improve their performance:
- A water holding device
- Reflective running clothing (for night running)
- A running head lamp
- Running shoes
- A GPS/pace tracking watch
The perfect runner gifts are thoughtful and personalized. Find out what items your running loved ones are missing on their gear list. Maybe their GPS watch just stopped working or perhaps it's time to get new running pants.

Long Distance Running Gift Ideas: Water Holding Device
Handheld Water Holder
Handheld is the way to go for many long distance runners! Many handheld water holders feature a fully adjustable hand strap and thumb hold for grip-free running, as well as pockets for keys, cash, cards and iphones. The Nathan Quickdraw Plus has a nifty squeeze bottle with all the features mentioned above and the best part about the Quickdraw is that you barely notice it's there and you don't have to hold onto anything, the bottle is simply attached to your hand.
Water Waist Pack
I used to wear a water waist pack when I was training for my first half marathon, but I've since then ditched my waist pack. When selecting the right running accessories, it's important that you feel 100% comfortable. In my case, the shape and slippery texture of the water bottles and the fit of the pack around my waist caused the bottles to slip out on a regular basis.
When you're choosing a waist pack, make sure that it fits nice and snug around your waist. Also, consider an easy to open bottle that is simple to take out and put back into the waist holster.
Runners Backpack with Hydration Pack: Camelbak Rim Runner Hydration Backpack
The benefits of using a hydration pack for running (or for other sport activities) is the ability for the pack to hold a lot of water. Hydration packs make it really easy to get water into you, using a valve that hooks onto the backpack strap. Many marathon trainers and long distance running folks use a running backpack as it holds enough liquid to get them through their long runs. The Camelbak Rim Runner gets great reviews for comfort, size and for the quality of the material and zippers.

Gift Ideas for Runners: Reflective Running Apparel
When I first started running, scheduling in runs was no problem. Then I had kids and now there are all sorts of logistics that come with my marathon training and I find myself trying to squeeze in runs after the kids are in bed. I can't stress enough the importance of getting proper nighttime running gear: reflective jackets/vests/pants/shoes and running headlamp. You don't have to spend too much to make yourself visible at night, but this gear will literally save your life. A great and inexpensive gift idea for runners is reflective running clothing and night time gear.
Garmin Forerunner 220: Best GPS Running Watch 2014
Runner Gifts: A GPS/Pace Tracking Watch
Garmin Forerunner 220 GPS Running Watch
When it comes to running watches, GPS watches are extremely handy, precise and scientific. The Garmin Forerunner 220will track your route, your pace and record everything on your watch and on your computer/ipad later. The high-resolution color display and lightweight design make this watch a runners favourite, not to mention how easy the watch is to use and to set up. You can set up alerts for heart rate, pace or run/walk intervals to help you stay in the desired range. When your run’s done and saved in your watch’s history, a post-run summary appears so you can see how you did. The 220 also notices if you hit any personal records on that run, such as your fastest mile, 5k, 10k, half or full marathon, or your longest run to date. All this makes the Garmin Forerunner 220 a perfect gift for a runner.
