Best Teddy Bears for Valentine's Gifts

Updated on October 26, 2015

Teddy Bears Make Cute Gifts!

Valentine's Day is typically thought of as a romantic holiday for lovers, but there's no reason why the whole family can't get involved in this festive holiday! Schoolchildren exchange valentines, husbands give their wives gifts that will last for a lifetime, and wives go out of their way to supply a romantic day for their husbands as well. Why shouldn't you feel free to involve the kids in this day, and show them how much you love them, too?

There are different kinds of love: Romantic love, erotic love, fraternal love and parental love being among them. Teddy bears make a cute gift for the non-romantic friends and family members on your list, and they often come with a message of love for the person you're choosing to gift.

Don't hesitate to purchase or make a teddy bear for your romantic partner either, though! They can be very romantic and cuddly, especially on those cold winter nights when your lover doesn't have you to snuggle up with.

This page will provide you with some suggested teddy bears for gifting, information about Vermont Teddy Bear (the author is not an affiliate) and how to make your own teddy bears! Be prepared for an overload of information, and plenty of opportunities to get the perfect gift for everyone on your Valentine's Shopping list this year!

Romantic Expression through Teddy Bears

Teddy bears can express a romantic sentiment to your valentine by telling her how much you love her. Bear options include those expressing the sentiment of "I love you" or "be mine" are readily available for purchase or customization through different companies (usually by Internet or catalog). Particularly when you choose a customized bear, you can provide your partner with a sweet message of love. This is an especially good way of expressing love in a newer relationship, where you're still in the "puppy love" phases of your relationship or when you want to say "I love you" for the first time.

Choosing the right point in your relationship for a Teddy Bear is especially important. There are two times when it is perhaps most appropriate to give your romantic partner a Teddy Bear as a Valentine's Gift.

  • When your relationship is young. Early in a relationship, the gift should be sweet rather than enduring. It would be folly to purchase a diamond for a girlfriend of three months, but a teddy bear may be an appropriate expression of your feelings, particularly if you feel that your feelings for her are getting deeper.
  • When you are separated. Being separated from your romantic partner is especially difficult, and giving him something that represents you will help to keep the real sting of that separation at bay, while also reminding him of your relationship with one another. A teddy bear makes a great way of keeping yourself in your partner's thoughts when you aren't there!

Having a teddy bear (or flowers!) delivered to your partner's place of work will make her friends jealous and may be a third great time to choose a teddy bear for a romantic gift for your wife or girlfriend! Just make sure that she's the type who can handle the attention from her friends or co-workers, as this can be embarrassing for shier people.

Why Choose a Vermont Teddy Bear for Valentine's Day?

When you purchase a Vermont Teddy Bear, you're getting the best in the business. Furthermore, when you purchase by phone or via their website, you can customize your bear to reflect your personality or your partner's personality. As in the photo above, there are many different styles of bear from this company, and you can add a message or your partner's name to the bear. What could be better than that?

This is especially sweet in a long-distance relationship where you're hoping to remind your partner of you when you're separated from one another for any length of time. Your bear selection will make your lover remember you when you are apart. Isn't that the point of a Valentine's Day gift in the first place? So choose something that reflects the both of you, and make sure that the bear you choose is high quality! The best quality comes hand made from the Vermont Teddy Bear Company (or hand made by you).

Choosing a Valentine's Teddy for Kids

When choosing a Valentine's Teddy for kids, the most important thing to look at is the durability of the toy itself. The written message may be lost (particularly on young children) but the toy and the comfort that it provides are symbols of love to children -- even before they know what the word "love" means when it's spoken. I recommend choosing a Gund product for children, as these are long-lasting and durable bears that aren't going to fall apart at the seams. These teddy bears are also clearly made to be toys, not to sit on a shelf as a physical representation of an emotion. They are made to be cuddled and carried around, and make the perfect sleeping companion for a young -- and sometimes rough -- child.

Materials for Making Your Own Valentine's Teddy

  • Sewing Needles (sharps)
  • Mohair Fabric (use something with a pile)
  • Matching Thread.
  • Polyester Fiberfill (or other stuffing)
  • Eyes (or buttons)
  • Joints (optional)
  • Nose (optional)
  • Pattern

Why Not Make Your Own Teddy Bear for Valentine's Day?

Teddy Bears aren't difficult to hand-make if you have basic sewing skills and an understanding of the stitches necessary to produce the bear (including the stitches necessary to close the bear's stuffing opening). If you are handy with a needle and thread, a homemade Teddy Bear might be just the ticket or a romantic and heartfelt Valentine's Day this year. Even if you've never attempted to make a stuffed animal before, this is a great opportunity to learn how, including the shaping necessary.

Just one word of warning: The materials necessary to make a Teddy Bear can be somewhat difficult to find, if you're looking to create an upper-end type of bear. Most high-quality teddy bears begin with mohair pile fabric (thought here are other materials you can use as well for this purpose).

Alternative materials (including real fur) can often be found in thrift stores.

A book of teddy bear techniques may help you to create your own teddy bears. The one at right comes highly recommended by the author of this article!

If you've never sewn a stuffed animal before, practice your techniques before making a bear for a gift, as the shaping may be new to beginning stitchers. Bears can be sewn by hand or on a sewing machine, but hand sewing produces the best effect.

  • When your relationship is new. In a new relationship, a teddy bear, coupled with a Valentine's Card (and a nice little love note) is a good way to express your feelings to someone who might not already know how you feel about them.
  • When you are separated from your lover. If distance separates you from the person you love, a teddy bear is a gift that will constantly remind your partner of you, even when you can't be there with them. Once again, this is a good time to include a love letter.
  • When you want to express love to a child. Children will understand that a teddy bear to hold onto and love represents love to them even before they are mature enough to grasp the meaning of the word that means "love." This is a way to convey a feeling to someone who doesn't have language yet.

The Right Teddy for the Right Person

Choosing the right teddy bear for the right person in your life is important. Unless for some reason you don't have a way of knowing (for example, if your relationship is very new) then you will want to make sure that your partner is interested in teddy bears. Some people (both men and women) find such things frivolous and prefer more practical or even easily discarded gifts (chocolates and flowers fit into the second category). If your partner has trouble with collecting things they don't need, purchasing another item which may simply sit in their house is ill advised.

In short, before even beginning to choose a bear for your valentine, you should be sure that a teddy bear is something they would enjoy receiving or that it's appropriate for them. For adults, any plush animals make better gifts for women than for men (who tend to be more practical).

There are three times that teddy bears make particularly good gifts for your partner. You can see these listed at right, with more information.

Make Your Bear an Expression of Love

Make sure that the bear that you choose for your lover or child isn't something that you've grabbed at the last minute. Choose something that you would like to receive yourself, and make sure that you've given yourself enough time for the bear to be delivered. Delivery to work or school, coupled by a dozen roses, makes a beautiful and meaningful gift for your loved one!
