Alice in Wonderland Mad Tea Party
We're All Mad Here
As a child, and still today Alice in Wonderland has been a story that I have always loved. I am a huge fan of both the book and the movies! Who wouldn't love a world full of nonsense? Talking caterpillars, cookies that made you grow smaller or taller, and a disappearing cat!
One of my favorite, and a very memorable scene is the mad tea party. Delightfully quirky characters and endless amounts of tea, what's not to love? You can easily recreate this nonsensical, whimsical, tea party on your own for any occasion! In fact there doesn't have to be a special occasion at all, you can simply host an unbirthday party. You will find any excuse to throw this fun filled party that will sure to delight!
A "Mad" Tea Party
An Alice in Wonderland party is a great way to celebrate any occasion or to just have fun. It is the chance to create your very own wonderland. I have always been enchanted by the idea of another world where everything is nonsense. The key to throwing a great "mad" party is having the perfect setting, appropriate food, and of course lots of teacups!
Don't Be Late!
Invitations are a fun way to let your guests know of the event. You can handmake them or create a digital invitation you can e-mail. I prefert the old fashioned way of snail mail! Don't forget to include who, what, when, and where! There are a lot of wonderful characters and scenes in Alice in Wonderland. Instead of trying to convey the entire story, make your invitation simple by choosing your favorite moment or character. For example, perhaps you love the caterpillar and you could make the text on the invite in smoky bubble letters! A simple teacup shaped card would do just as well. For some added fun, insert your favorite quote.
Curiouser and Curiouser
The setting, which includes place and decorations are very important. They set the atmosphere and determine just how magical your tea party will be! If possible it should take place outside. Use your chosen place to your advantage. What can you hang from those tree limbs or how can you highlight that patch of mushrooms naturally growing in the yard? Wonderland is full of nonsensical, whimsical, delights that you can replicate at your own party. Here are some typical elements from Alice in Wonderland that you probably have already or can purchase at your local thrift store:
- playing cards in different sizes
- clocks, watches, pocket watches
- teapots and teacups (i suggest you get as many as you can as they can be used for a variety of things apart from drinking out of!)
- white and red roses
- chess pieces
- top hats (you can make your own)
- bottles of various sizes
- "drink me" labels
- other random "nonsense" treasures you come across
You can easily use all those teacups and saucers for creating beautiful centerpieces. All you have to do is stack them! You can fill your displayed teacups and teapots with flowers. Red roses keep the Queen happy, or you can choose a more colorful variety to mimic the talking flowers.
Food is a very important aspect at any party. Food is also a particulary key element in the book as well as the movies of Alice in Wonderland. The words "eat me" and "drink me" can easily be used just about anywhere. Write it with icing on treats or on tags attached to beverages. Any tea time treat such as cookies, biscuits, tarts, tiny sandwiches, cupcakes, etc., would fit right in. A fruit caterpillar or Cheshire cat tail made on kabob sticks would fit right in. Adding some hearts, and other playing card suits, here and there would certainly please the Queen of Hearts and your guests! The white rabbit may enjoy a lovely carrot cake, and of course you can't go wrong with large amounts of tea! As a host or hostess it is a good practice to always be mindful of any allergy or dietary restrictions your guests may have.
Do You Play Croquet?
Party games are a wonderful way to keep your guests, especially the little ones, entertained and busy having fun!
For younger guests, you could have a white rabbit scavenger hunt! Simply use a white rabbit toy or cut out to hide. Once found the child can choose his or her own hiding spot to keep the game going!
For those who are into crafts (that's me!) why not have a decorate your own teacup station? Decorating your own top hat with feathers and gems is a must. Top hats can be hard to come by but can easily be made out of cardboard or other materials.
With the tea party as the backdrop, what better way to capture the moment than with a photo booth. Have an area set up with props such as silly hats and clothes, extra large teacups, playing cards, Cheshire cat smiles on a stick, and so on. This way your whimsical party will not be forgotten!
