Frida Kahlo Costume How To

Source

Frida Kahlo had a bright, festive, and unusual look. To make this costume for Halloween look at the pictures, decide which look you like best, and make it from clothes you might have. Check your closets, your dressers, and your attic...if you still need an article of clothing or an accessory to complete your costume, check a thrift store. Put your hair in a braid or a bun.

To make your own Frida Kahlo costume you will need:

  • Long black skirt
  • Mexican style blouse
  • Scarf/shawl - sometimes called a rebozo
  • Fake flowers for your head - if you have them on clips that would be great
  • Gold necklace (Frida wore a knotted chain, but most any will be okay)
  • Dangling earrings - check the pictures if you want to know an exact look
  • Eyebrows/mustache - Frida had facial hair and she was proud of it. You can use eyebrow pencil or eyeshadow.

The Girl With The Pearl Earring Costume Ideas

Source

The Girl With The Pearl Earring is a beautiful painting by Johannes Vermeer and it's an easy Halloween costume to put together. The style of painting is called a tronie. That means the facial expression in the painting is a bit exaggerated. The original work of art is an oil painting on canvas. Your homemade costume will be made with clothing similar to those of the model in the painting, a jacket, skirt, scarves wrapped almost turbin style, and of course, the iconic pearl earrings.

To make a costume inspired by The Girl With The Pearl Earrings check your closet to see if you have some of these items:

  • A Blue Scarf
  • A Yellow Scarf
  • A White Shirt
  • A Brown Skirt
  • A Brown Sweater or Jacket
  • Brown Boots
  • Pearl Earrings

If you don't have all the clothes and accessories you need to assemble this art inspired costume, check your local consignment or thrift shop. These cheap resale stores are a treasure chest of costume accessories. This costume is a breeze to put on and you are going to feel like a Halloween Masterpiece when you are dressed up in it.

Lady Gaga Dresses As A Pablo Picasso Painting

Source

Lady Gaga is all dressed up as Pablo Picasso’s “Girl Before A Mirror” and it's quite an impressive costume look. Whenever we think of an art inspired costume I would think Picasso and his art jump to the top of the list, he was so influential in the art world. He and his fellow artist, Georges Braque, introduced us to the Cubist movement. Picasso's art changes through the years and we see the differences in his work. That includes his Blue Period, The Rose Period, The African-influenced Period, Analytic Cubism, Synthetic Cubism, and his Crystal Perido. Among his works of art we also see different styles such as neoclassical style and even Surrealism.

To make your own Picasso artwork costume you will need some fabric with a Picasso-like print on it or you can visit Etsy or Ebay to look for a scarf with a Picasso painting on it. I found one on Ebay for as little as $5.00 from his abstract blue period, and a pink, purple, and blue one below it. Check it out if you don't have something similar at home you can use. The scarf designs are from the cubism period and they don't have to be extremely large since it's the facial makeup you are going to put on that will really finish your costume. See what fabrics or scarves you can find, choose one, and then watch the makeup video tutorial to complete your Picasso painting Halloween costume.

Picasso is such a recognizable artist, I am sure everyone will know who inspired this artsy costume. It's interesting, unique, and timeless...a masterpiece!

Picasso’s work is divided into periods known as: the Blue Period (1901–1904), the Rose Period (1905–1907), the African-influenced Period (1908–1909), Analytic Cubism (1909–1912), and Synthetic Cubism (1912–1919).

Halloween DIY: Vincent Van Gogh Costume

How To Make A Vincent Van Gogh Costume & Makeup Tutorial

The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh is a great Halloween costume look, and it's such a recognizable work of art, everyone will know who you are. There are two video tutorials to show you how to transform yourself into Vincent's Starry Night painting. One of these videos will show you how to create this costume and the other will help you with the makeup. The transformation is amazing and while this might not be the easiest DIY costume you could choose to make, it is a dramatic and effective one. This, done correctly, is a costume contest winner.

You will need a jacket, a hat, and some acrylic paints to make the costume.

The Vincent Van Gogh DIY makeup list is a bit more involved, but there's nothing outrageous on it and you probably have a lot of the makeup needed already. Watch the video and see what you have that will match the specific items listed below. It's a Halloween costume, so only buy the items you really need. This costume look also uses fx lenses, but that's def optional. You don't need them. Here is what you will need:

  • Cinema Secrets Ultimate Foundation Primer
  • Makeup Forever Flash Palette
  • Ben Nye Neutral Set Powder
  • NYX Curve Eyeliner
  • NYX Collection Noir Liquid Eyeliner in Black
  • LOTS of brushes

The lenses are called Princess Pinky Twilight Blue from PinkyParadise if you do want to check them out. As I said, these lenses are optional.

The Birth Of Venus Costume

Source

This delightful and very unusual Halloween costume is taken from the painting, The Birth of Venus by artist Sandro Botticelli. This artsy outfit could certainly be a costume winner and I am quite sure you will be the only one dressed as this Venus.

To make The Birth of Venice costume you will need:

  • Decorative netting
  • Hot glue gun - glue sticks
  • Assorted sized seashells - very large, medium, & small
  • Wire
  • Blonde wig
  • Nude/Beige body suit
  • Beige tights
  • Hair ribbon

Make the skirt by wrapping the net around your waist and secure it shut using safety pins or wire..this will let you know how big it should be. Your netting will have a slit in the front.

Then take it off, slide some paper under it and start to apply the shells using your hot glue gun. Just glue the shells right on to the netting. Glue smaller and medium shells down both sides of the skirt slits. Glue the larger and medium shells around the waist of the netting. Wear your tights and bodysuit, wrap the shelled netting around your waist and secure it shut. If you can sew, you might want to do that...but you can wire it, tie it with rope or a beige belt, or use pins. Put on your long, blonde wig, add hair ribbons...and any makeup you want, and there's your Venus.

Adele Bauer Bloch Lady In Gold Costume Picture

Source

The beautiful painting, The Lady in Gold, by Gustav Klimt created in his golden phase has a very interesting history. It was a portrait of a wealthy Austrian woman, Adele Bloch-Bauer, painted in 1907. Adele died in 1925 and in 1938 her husband had to flee Austria to escape the Nazi invasion. The picture was then stolen by the Nazis and it wasn't until 2006 that the picture was returned through the Austrian court system, to the family.

This is a wonderful Halloween costume inspired by a great painting. It may take a bit of searching for just the right gold fabric and some colorful appliques to put on it. You can also find a gold dress and try to recreate the Art Nouveau look Klimt added to his painting. Look for gold, copper, and other colored spangles to attach to the fabric to give it design, color, and shine. It is a wonderful picture and as you can see in the picture, it's also a fabulous costume. I found a scarf that would be perfect to turn any gold dress or fabric into the Woman in Gold.

Make sure to watch the wonderful makeup video I found to give yourself a total Woman in Gold look. You can also use some of the makeup ideas to decorate your costume. I can't think of a more beautiful art inspired costume than this masterpiece, and the history behind the painting is quite interesting. There's been a movie released about the efforts the family went through to gain rightful ownership of this painting.

This scarf would be the perfect accent for your Halloween costume. I searched several outlets and finally found this on Amazon.

Grab Bag Makeup: Gustav Klimt Inspired Tutorial

Also known as the Woman in Gold, the painting originally named Adele Bloch-Bauer was stolen from the Bloch-Bauer home by Nazi soldiers in 1940. In 2006 the painting was returned by a court case verdict and, at long last, returned to the family in 2006.

Jackson Pollock DIY Art Inspired Halloween Costume

Source

Jackson Pollock is famous for his unique style of painting...drip painting. Pollock contributed greatly to the art movement called abstract expressionism. What a great idea for your art inspired Halloween costume! Just gather up some old sweats, or grab some jeans and a t-shirt...drip paint all over them...you've created your own version of a Jackson Pollock painting that you can wear. Make your own masterpiece for that costume party you are invited to.

Or, like the costume pictured above, you can "drip paint" your face with your makeup assortment. I believe I could absolutely say, you will be the only Pollock inspired costume at the party. Easy, creative, cheap, and fun...what more can you ask of a Halloween outfit?

Make A Bob Ross Costume

Bob Ross has helped thousands, or maybe millions, of people learn to paint. He hosted his own TV show, The Joy of Painting. And now he is inspiring your Halloween costume! Bob used to like to paint "Happy Little Trees" and the tree costume next to him in the picture would turn this Bob Ross costume into a humorous couples costume.

You will need:

  • An Afro Wig
  • Jeans
  • Shirt
  • Black Shoes
  • Painters Pallet (A Cardboard with different paint colors on it and a paint brush glued to it)

The Mona Lisa Costume

Source

The Mona Lisa is another masterpiece of the art world painted by Leonardo da Vinci in the early 1500s. Lisa del Giocondo is the name of the model, and this painting was commissioned by her family. One interesting fact about the Mona Lisa is that there are no visible eyelashes or eyebrows on the model's face.

Here's how you can make your own Mona Lisa costume for Halloween:

  • A Piece Of Cardboard Cut Out Like A Frame Covered With Gold Fabric and an attached piece of material to attach to your waist.
  • A Long Brown Straight Wig - Unless you have long brown hair
  • Dark Colored Long Sleeve Robe Or Dress
  • Simple Makeup
  • Practice Wearing A Slight Smile

Dear Hunter Oil Painting Inspired Halloween Costume

To make your own "Dear Hunter" costume for couples you will need the following items:

  • A Tuxedo
  • A Pocket Square
  • An Old Man Mask
  • A Big Black Hat
  • A White Gown
  • Lace For The Sleeves
  • A Deer Mask

Add extra detail to the old man mask by outlining some of the facial features with an eyeliner stick ... or paint the lines on.
