Elegant Chic & Artsy Hand Painted Designer Scarves Make Excellent Gifts

Updated on February 9, 2015

Designer Scarves for the Woman Who Loves Hand Crafted Scarves

Scarves are more than filmy neckpieces. This is one of my favorites. I usually wear it over an under scarf, so the full coloring and subtle effects are highlighted by the contrast.

My attempts at scarf painting were flubs - firstly I couldn't find the types of silk I wanted. It was before I entered the Internet marketplace.

What I did end up with was enough raw silk to make a tiny decorated tote bag, and I use my initial experiment on light cotton, as a wall-hanging. I'm a painter but I stick to paintings and mixed-media collage for my water media brushwork now.

See how artisans paint on luscious fabrics, using dyes, even wax, to create memorable designs. I've included Batik and Tie Dye because of their comparison to Silk Painting.

Hand Painted - Silk, Batik, Tie Dye, to Wool, these scarf sites are selected for fine quality and unique coloring, painting and styling. Find your organization's official scarf at Marisol Deluna, a hip scarf at Hip Scarves for fun, or Fichu's Fiber Art.

Silk Painting Explained and Demonstrated

Pure white Chinese silk is carefully stretched over a frame and anchored tightly. Designers specialize in laying down carefully drawn lines with masking fluid. The lines are called fences, like fences that border lawns, and they serve as borders to keep the dyes from bleeding from one section into another.

Painterly techniques involve wetting a section of silk with water before applying or painting on dyes. Then the dyed silk can be left to dry before applying a contrasting colored dye with brushes and/or fabric paint tubes or pens.

How The Silk Worm Creates the Luscious Silk Thread

The silk worm turns out a silk thread in the process of making a cocoon. Skilled workers carefully unwind the filaments that are spun into a figure eight pattern, after soaking them in water to make them more pliable. Several grades of silk are produced depending on the food source for the silk worms.

Silk is the best and a scarf can make an outfit. I like wearing all one solid color and just add a pretty scarf.
