August 1st - National Raspberry Cream Pie Day, Lugnasadh
August is a month full of wacky holidays, some of them just outright silly, some of them traditional and awesome. For August 1st, 2012, the month starts off with a sweet treat and a delicious way to spend the day. August 1st is National Raspberry Cream Pie Day. It is also, for the Pagan folk out there, Lughnasadh - also referred to as Lammas. In the following Hub, I'll give you all the information you need to know about the holidays for this first day of August, as well as a delicious recipe for a standard Raspberry Cream Pie.
Some sources claim that August 1, 2012 would also be Friendship Day, but Friendship Day is actually celebrated on the first Sunday in August, and you'll learn about that in another Hub.
Raspberry Cream Pie Day
While the origins of National Raspberry Cream Pie Day are quite hard to pin down, there is one thing you can't deny about this special day: It's roots are delicious. Raspberries come in multiple species, but the two most widely seen kinds of this tasty berry are the Rubus idaeus - the red raspberry, and the Rubus occidentalis - the black raspberry. Rich in antioxidants, the natural defense to oxidation in your body which can lead to disease, these berries are also very highly ranked in terms of ORAC fruits. ORAC stands for oxygen radical absorbance capacity, and is a measure of the antioxidant properties of the fruit. Raspberries are also a very high source of vitamin C at almost 30 mg per cup serving.
- 2 cups black raspberries, washed, pureed
- 1 cup whipping cream
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 egg white, beaten
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- Brush graham cracker pie crust with beaten egg white and bake the pie shell for 5 minutes, let the crust settle and cool after baking.
- In a medium mixing bowl, beat whipping cream until it forms into soft peaks, then set the mixing bowl aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat cream cheese for roughly 20 seconds, longer if not fully softened.
- Add blackberry puree to the cream cheese and beat together until you reach a consistent color (except for the tiny seeds)
- Fold in the whipping cream a bit at a time with the mixer on low.
- Fill the pie shell with the raspberry cream mixture, and freeze for four to twenty-four hours. Slice evenly and enjoy.

Lammas or Lughnasadh is the celebration of the first harvest. The Pagan holiday itself is the halfway point between Midsummer and Mabon. It is also a Scottish quarter day. Lammas features itself in literature in the wildly famous Romeo and Juliet, with Lammas being the birthday of Juliet herself, as well as finding its place in poetry and short stories that generally center in supernatural themes such as witches plaguing farmers and other such tales.
