Avatar Halloween Costumes - Buy the Perfect Na'vi Outfit

Updated on January 5, 2013

After James Cameron's ground breaking science fiction film Avatar broke nearly every box office record to become the highest grossing movie of all time, the popularity of related merchandise skyrocketed. The stunning success of the film virtually guaranteed that Avatar Halloween costumes would be the most sought after selection of the 2010 season.

The demand for related kits, makeup, and accessories has already been more than some stores have been able to keep up with. It is already quite clear that the record breaking run is showing no signs of slowing down as we head towards Halloween. If you are planning to dress up as one of the blue-skinned Na'vi tribe inhabitants of Pandora this year, you will want to make sure that you shop early so you can secure all of the important elements of your costume before they run out.

What You Need

There are several options for putting together the ultimate Avatar costume. If simplicity is your thing and you want to have everything in one package so you can pull it out and get on with your business of trick-or-treating or heading out for a Halloween party, you may want to consider one of the pre-packaged costume kits. They are available for both boys and girls so you should be able to satisfy your entire tribe (OK, now I'm getting carried away with it)!

The girl's costumes usually come in the form of the character Neytiri and feature a full length blue body suit adorned with tribal markings. The tail comes attached so you don't have to worry about loose pieces.

If you really want to go all out, add the Neytiri wig and a pair of blue ears to look as if you just stepped off the planet of Pandora. You can partner it up with a pair of blue shoes and some face paint to complete the package. I suggest using a pair of Crocs as they are comfortable, affordable, and good for uses that stretch beyond simply dressing up.

The boys' Avatar outfit is based on the character Jake Sully and features khaki pants and a jacket with a black shirt over a blue body suit. This one is available in versions with or without an included basic mask to go along with it. The included mask is one of those thin plastic versions with the single strap in the back. The one it comes with is probably just fine for younger kids who don't tend to wear them for a long period of time.

If you want to step up to a higher quality look, there is a foam and latex mask that might be a bit more appealing to kids who are a little older. If your goal is to achieve the most realistic looking Avatar costume you can possibly put together, consider building your outfit piece by piece rather than going with a packaged kit.

More Realistic and Advanced Options

If you want to look like you just came from an audition for a part in the movie, start with a deluxe Avatar makeup kit that will allow you to paint your skin blue and add your own custom tribal markings and patterns. Next, find the perfect pair of colored Halloween contacts to give your eyes that eerie greenish-yellow glow. Finish it off with a wig that will allow you get that long, flowing hair and put it in place just the way you like it.

The key to getting this right is to let your creativity flow a little and personalize it by mixing a little bit of the movie with your own individual style. Once you've fully transformed from your human body to your Na'vi Avatar, you will be ready to go out and show off your new costume creation that will leave your friends with no doubt in their minds that you've officially joined the tribe.

If you are looking for a fun side project to do at home, buy a little extra blue paint and a pumpkin carving kit so you can complete the theme by having a few Na'vi pumpkins as well. A few of these outside with some light mist from a fog machine will help to create a futuristic mini-world right in your own front yard. The kids will love it and it makes for a creative and inexpensive way to decorate your house for Halloween.

Additional Costume Ideas for Kids

If blue isn't for you or if you need another popular outfit, there are plenty of other fun choices that will have you ready to haunt. Iron Man 2 costumes are not far behind at the top of the chart for boys while Alice in Wonderland and the ever popular princess outfits are trending choices for girls.

Depending on your budget, you can go with a complete kit or wear your street clothes with a fancy mask or custom makeup. Don't forget the accessories that make Halloween fun and safe like glow sticks, flashlights, and something for your favorite pet to wear!
