10 Best Cities For New Years Eve Celebration

Updated on June 25, 2012

New Years Eve is celebrated world-wide by all people, regardless of their nationality and religion. We are all waiting for this special night and carefully preparing for it. Many people even believe that a fulfillment of an upcoming year depends on how you spend your New Years Eve. If it is full of joy and happiness, then a new year will be full of joy and happiness and vice versa. Many people like to stay at home with their families and friends. Others like to travel - some to ski resorts, some to exotic islands, some to a new city. And if you finally want to visit a city you always wanted to visit, New Years Eve is a perfect time to do so. That is a magical time when all of the cities around the world are more gloriously alive than they usually are. Here you are 10 best cities to be for New Years Eve in order to have unforgettable New Years celebration. New Years Eve is approaching fast - don't forget to make all your travel reservations for this important night in advance.

Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo, Japan

If you want to start celebrating the New Year earlier, go to Tokyo, where the celebration starts on the 29th of December. Here, you also have a chance to prolong your New Years celebration up to January 4th. Even though most of the major tourist sites close down for that week, the streets of Tokyo, as well as, all restaurants and clubs are packed with people. The city is jumping with loads of fireworks, dancing and singing. Join locals and enter the New Year in traditional Japanese way: eating Toshikoshi Soba (New Years Eve Noodle) and listening to Juya No Kane (The Watch-Night Bell). The noodle, being long, symbolizes long and healthy life. The Watch-Night Bell, an analog to a countdown, rings 108 times at the temples all over Japan symbolizing getting rid of unhappiness, poorness and etc. On January 1st, visit the Imperial Palace, since it is one of the two days only when the Palace opens to the public.

Sydney Harbour Fireworks

To be one of the first in the world to ring in the New Year, go to Sydney. Here, you can witness absolutely stunning fireworks accompanied by music exploding over the Sidney Harbour Bridge, the magnificent center piece of beautiful Sydney Harbour. More than a million people gather around Sydney Harbour for Midnight Fireworks, countdown and party. There are plenty of vantage points around the harbour, but probably best views of fireworks and all the New Years action are from one of the boats in the harbour. What can be better than to party on a boat at New Years Eve wearing shorts and flip flops? Don't forget to book your place on board in advance!

The show starts after Big Ben chimes midnight and lasts for 15 minutes. You also can take a river cruise for better views of the fireworks and more romantic way bring in the New Year. Endless number of London pubs, clubs and restaurant are open well into New Years night across the capital with special parties and entertainment. Ring in the New Year Spanish style by participating in Noche Vieja in Barcelona. From ballroom dance to salsa to flamenco to rock band performances - music, dance and parties are all over the city and festivities last for as long as a week. At midnight, when a great clock strikes twelve, experience old Spanish tradition of eating 12 grapes, one grape following each bell sound. If you stay in Barcelona till January 5, then you have a chance to participate in Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Parade). The Three Kings arrive by boat at the waterfront of Barcelona and proceed slowly through the city throwing barley sugar sweets to the children lining the route.

Hi Wanderlust, I wanted to thank you again for your kind words to my "Live in the present moment" hub, and I noticed that a huge chunk of it was missing. If the top 10 list wasn't there last time you visited, take a look - I think you'll enjoy it. Sydney & Tokyo both sound awesome!

One thing you didn't mention about Sydney is that, being in the Southern Hemisphere, you'll be watching the fireworks on a warm, balmy night. Near midnight in Sydney you'll see lots of gals strolling around in their filmy cocktail dresses and guys in open neck shirts - there's no need for a coat or even a cardi! A lot of people take a champagne picnic down to the foreshore early in the day to reserve a ringside seat on the grass.

    • Wanderlust profile image

Wanderlust 8 years ago from New York City

That's why Marisa I want to go to Sydney for New Years Eve! I planned to go Sydney around Christmas and New Year a couple of years ago, but I am sure one day I will. Thank you guys for your comments.

Brona, I am sure that Hogmanay in Edinburgh is a very interesting experience. Even though I spent a lot of time in England, I've never been to Scotland. I'd love to go there one day, in the summer probably :)

Lissie, have a fantastic trip! I am sure, we will read all about it! Thank you everybody for nice comments.

What a wonderful array of places to celebrate the new year! We often just think of New York and the big ball but you have shown us many different places.

While I stay home I would like to see Tokyo. The tradition in Barcelona is wonderful eating the 12 grapes! Now why don't we have a tradition more unique? We have a ball.

      Happy New Year to ALL!!

Edinburgh is the best place for New Year. I cant believe someone suggested London here! England is not known for celebrating New Year really, that is until people in England saw the Americans love New Year.

New Year celebrations in Edinburgh carry on for days after. Its probably the biggest holiday event in Scotland and NOT to be missed at all. One of the worlds biggest street parties in a beautiful city. Its also a very cultural thing so i would put Edinburgh at number 1.

I love Paris, I lived there for 2 years but it is one of the worst NYE ever. They no longer do fireworks and are so worried about security concerns and youth from the ghettos coming in and ripping up the place the whole night has a distinctly military-esque feel. This is obviously a heavily American-centered list as I would say take off Orlando and Toronto. Also, to not mention Berlin and Rio de Janeiro (with millions of people in white on the beaches of Copa Cabana for the firework show) makes me think this author hasn't been anywhere!

    • profile image

      customreceiptbooks 6 years ago

I don't know how you can list London anywhere near the top of this list! I live in London and most pubs and bars charge entry fees on new year's eve simply because they can, and still they are uncomfortably full. Transportation slows down considerably, and you either have to get a place by the river and wait hours to see the fireworks, or push through crowds, and then the display lasts about 2 minutes! Go somewhere warm!

Sydney is always a great option! Amazing every year and caters for everyone. Can do the family thing at the harbour with the atmosphere starting early in the day and kids fireworks at 9pm then midnight fireworks are the best I have ever seen! Or can have a quiet night and party all day the next day at field day music festival. Thailand NYE is also brilliant! I highly recommend Phi Phi Island or Koh Phangan full moon party for beach parties where drinks and music are aplenty and the weather is amazing!!!

Los Angeles- Many New Year celebration enthusiasts book air tickets to Los Angeles - the City of Angels. It is very easy to find a New Year event in Los Angeles but the hard part is to choose which one to attend. Nice post

Forget about what you read above. The best New Year celebration is in Rio de Janeiro. Tokyo, Toronto, huahuahuahu

I'm surprised Rio de Janeiro wasn't mentioned. Every year, over 2 million people head to Copacabana beach in all white clothing to celebrate with fireworks, champagne, and live music. A "must see"!

This article ( and the comments over the years) was very useful. I'll not be straying too far from home this year, but the destinations mentioned are something to think about for next year. Thanks for sharing.

Believe me that Paramaribo, Suriname is the best city to celebrate new years eve. Suriname shoots the most fireworks per capita from the whole world and has the kindest and happiest people imaginable?

What about Hogmanay in Edinburgh, definitely a bigger celebration than some of the cities listed, and it's actually a cultural holiday, not just a modern city with fireworks.

Been to Orlando and Disney is great for NYE they have the fireworks do the countdown. In the sky it was extremely cool, but Sydney Australia definitely is number one in my list, experienced NYE for 2012 here on the harbor and DANG it was jaw dropping :)
