Clutter Free Gifts for Kids

With Christmas coming, and even with the economy the way it is, a lot of us have to mentally prepare ourselves for all the "stuff" that will be accumulated during the holidays: unwanted plastic toys, annoying battery powered kids gifts, dollar store stocking stuffers, the list goes on. When we're shopping for Christmas gifts, I think we need to re-evaluate what we consider to be clutter (will the gifts be used daily or only a few times, then discarded?). Also, what might a practical, thoughtful gift entail? The definition of clutter is a collection of things lying about in an untidy mass. A clutter-free Christmas means gifts that are used on a daily basis (clothing, books or daily used sports equipment) or gifts that are consumable (candy, music gift cards, movie passes, museum memberships ect.).

An attainable strategy for holiday gift giving is the “want, need, wear, read” approach, outlined by Dandee. Essentially, each child receives as gifts something he wants, something he needs, something he will wear, and something he can read. A want could be a number of things, but many families are opting for a big ticket item that all the kids want such as a backyard trampoline. or a portable outdoor pool, as opposed to giving each child something want, individually. I will highlight some key big ticket items that might help your family form their clutter-free Christmas wish list. Generally, a need gift could be school related supplies, sports equipment, it really depends on the individual needs of your child/children. Wear and read gifts are more self explanatory. In this article, I will be highlighting some clutter-free, tangeable, unique gifts for kids: clutter-free stocking stuffers; big ticket, family gifts; and some great book options for kids.

Clutter-Free Gift Ideas: The Big Ticket Item

When it comes to clutter-free gifts for kids, sometimes you just want to get your kids something extra special. So, instead of giving each child a small gift, why not combine your resources and get your whole family one big ticket item that they can all enjoy equally? Something that you and your family have been dreaming about and saving up for. A big ticket item could be something tangeable that your whole family can use: a trampoline or above ground pool. A big ticket item can also be an experience like a family trip to Hawaii or to Disneyland.

A large trampoline is a fun gift for children of all ages. I even find myself jumping on the trampoline from time to time, good for stress relief, no? The ExacMe 14' Ft. Trampoline has excellent reviews on Amazon and it comes with all the bells and whistles you need to create a safe and fun zone for your whole family. Here are the specs for the ExacMe:

  • Heavy Duty 14FT Trampoline with enclosure and pad, also included a ladder
  • Rust Resistant Galvanized Steel Heavy Duty Frame; Weight limits 375 lbs, much higher than other trampolines
  • Sturdy straps and ropes to secure net to trampoline; Net door as zipper to open/close
  • 6 W-shaped legs with 12 balanced contact points, much more stable and safe than other 4W or 5W legs trampoline

Another option is an above ground pool, which will get plenty of use in the spring and summer months. Most above ground pools range in price, depending on the size and specs, between $100 and $1650, with most pools priced at the $100 to $200 range. It's recommended that if you use an above ground pool, you should invest in a pool cover, a ground cloth, and pool chemicals. The combination of these three items will ensure your new pool will last as long as it should. Some things to look for in an above ground pool that will give your pool a longer life expectancy are:

  • A sturdy valve that holds the water in securely.
  • A functional filter
  • Side walls made of durable, multi-layered material
  • Easy to set up pool (some pools come with instructional DVDs)

Unique Gifts for Kids: The Book with No Pictures, by B.J. Novak

You might think a book with no pictures seems boring and serious. Except . . . here’s how books work. Everything written on the page has to be said by the person reading it aloud. Even if the words say . . .

— B.J. Novak

Unique Gifts for Kids: Up and Coming Children's Books

Books are great gifts for children because children love books. Most of us are familiar with Comedien, B.J. Novak's writing and acting in "The Office" and "The Mindy Project". Novak has written a unique children's book called The Book with No Pictures. This book is one of a kind, as it's the first children's book with no illustrations. Rather than focus on the visuals, this story focusses on the actual words on the page. The words of this read aloud book will transform the reader into an instant comedian. I gaurrentee you'll get a laugh or two out of this one from your kids (you'll probably laugh too).

Another unique and upcoming children's book is Press Here by Herve Tullet. Each page of this surprising book instructs the reader to press the dots, shake the pages, tilt the book, and who knows what will happen next! This book is unique because it uses a voice-over narration. Press Here is a fun gift for kids because it's so unique and creative.

"We believe in magic after reading this book (Press Here)....This could quite possibly give birth to a whole new genre of kid lit."
