Beautiful Barbados!

Okay, I'm exaggerating just a trifle there. If you need to buy a perfect pressie for a buddy who loves all things Barbadian – Barbadossian? - then you don't, I suppose, need to actually travel all the way to Barbados, buy it for them, hop on a flight back home and bring it back in time for their birthday tea complete with games of the bumps and hide and seek. (And silly party hats, and silly string. Don't forget the silly string. It's very important.)

No. The whole point of giving a gift to someone who's really, like really, really into the whole Barbados thing, is not that it has to actually come from Barbados. (Rolls eyes. Obviously. After all, they're the one who longs to visit Barbados.) No, all that you have to do when you're planning to give them a gift, is to make sure that it brings Barbados to mind for them. And then they'll love you forever, tra la, or that's the plan, anyway. No guarantees here!

So, what is there that will do that particular trick? What's the gift that mostly succinctly and powerfully says 'Barbados' to you? Just off the top of my head, I'd say it would probably have to be something sun-drenched and summery, redolent of Barbados attractions. Maybe something musical? Or possibly fruit-flavoured. (Okay, I've been watching too many TV ads, or at least paying too much attention to them. I could probably sing you a few jingles if you liked.)

A few simple steps, maybe. Decide what category of present you're going to buy. (Music? Clothing? Books?) And then apply a Barbados filter to them. By that I mean, ask yourself, what books are about Barbados? (Barbadian authors? Barbadian history?) Go to the music section in the Apple online store and input Barbados into the search engine. Or, maybe, just buy your prospective gift acceptor a new bikini for the beach, if you're planning on getting them an outfit!
