Looking For Chanukah Gifts?

Hanukkah (Chanukah) is the Jewish holiday which is celebrated near the Christmas holiday. The Hanukkah is an old traditional festival to remember the great victory of the brave fierce Jewish warriors over the Greek army. It is a festival which is very appealing to children - and they expect Hanukkah gifts..

If you are Jewish and wish to bring your children closer to the festival, or if you are invited to a Jewish home and wish to bring the children a respectful gift. Here below are a few guidelines on the Hanukkah festival and some Hanukkah gifts ideas for children too.

Understanding the Chanukah Festival

The Hanukkah is celebrated each year with candle lightning and dreidel games.

The main theme of the Hanukkah festival is the the 8 +1 candle Menorah, which helps to remember the 8 days of the great miracle, when the Holy Mount temple was out of olive oil, and a small can of olive oil was used to light the Menorah for 8 days!

The Chanukah Menorah - is a special Menorah called Chanu-Ki-Ya, which has 8 candle holders and one Shamash, which is the main candle that lights the others. The Shamash is always higher than the rest of the candles. (See picture on right).

Dreidel Games - The spinning dreidel is a traditional children game, they spin it and 'bet' on which of the four sides it will land. The Dreidel has 4 sides with Hebrew letters on it. The letters stand for "Nes Gadol Haya Sham", which means "Great Miracle Happened There".

Potato Latkes - The main traditional dish is potato Latkes, which are shallow-fried pancakes of grated or ground potato, flour and egg, often flavored with grated onion or garlic and seasoning. Because the Latkes are fried in deep oil pan, they are soaked in oil.. Just to let everyone remember the 'oil miracle' which happened 2500 years ago.
