Christmas Decorations and their Cost

Updated on December 6, 2011

pictures of outrageous christmas decorations

Are they really worth it?

First I want to share some information on the cost of decorations and the money spent every year. The averages this year show 3 billion dollars being spent on the Christmas tree alone, and over 6 billion on various decorations. Is this a waste? Half of the decorations will end up in a land fill and most are made of plastic. The trees will also end up in the trash. Not to mention the increase in the use of electricity at Christmas time.

The real question is, could this money be put to better use? Could we give this money to a soup kitchen? A children's hospital? What about our local food pantry? Church? It seems the times of Christmas being celebrated the way it should have decreased and the commercialism gets worse every year.

Christmas decorations can be fun but I have seen so many houses with so many lights and decorations it looks like a shopping mall. Can we conserve a little to give more? Certainly we can but will people do it? No. I will agree these picture are beautiful but they certain aren't "green" or even smart. I cannot imagine the bills they get in January. They have to be frightening to say the least.

Growing up we made popcorn strings and made a lot of our own tree decorations. Purchasing used decorations is a way to recycle as well. My mom used to bake a certain type of dough that could be saved. We painted our own decorations. It was a great way to spend time as a family.

It seems like traditions have become a way for the rich to become richer and the poor spend their hard earned money on cheap plastic. Would love to have the old days back when you only bought a few things for Christmas and didn't have to compete with your neighbor.

Every family has to do what is right for them. I grew up feeling I did not have to compete, etc. Make your own decorations, and do not cave into buying your kids the most expensive gaming system. You have to set the boundaries.

I think the Christmas tree etc have their place, it is just that so many people overdo it and focus only on spending.
