Christmas Gift Ideas for Toddlers

Updated on March 10, 2014

Toddler Mentality

Toddlers are certainly the most fun people to shop for during the Christmas season. Not only are the toys adorable, but many of them are so great for fun, imagination, growing, and developing strong bodies and minds.

Plus, you can find endless options that are affordably priced. Here is a list of Christmas gift ideas for toddlers to jump-start your list.

When is the last time you shopped for a toddler?

Toddlers always want to do it themselves; they are asserting their independence at this age, and they like to do more “grown up” things. A kids activity basket or make-your-own kit allows them to “build” or make something on their own. A good choice, for instance, is a paint-your-own birdhouse.

For between $10 and $15, you can get a plain wooden birdhouse, some paints, and a brush that the toddler will be able to decorate and hang outside. It is great for painters, nature lovers, and curious kids.

Bath Stickers

Is bath time a favorite activity in your house? Or is it a struggle? Either way, bath stickers can help! Give them by themselves or add it to a bath time fun basket!

Alex Toys is a great choice; you will get a mesh bath bag with convenient suction cups filled with soft foam cutouts. There is a variety of sets, including numbers and letters, farm animals, cars, trucks, and buses, and beach scenes. When wet, they stick to the sides of your tub or tile wall for terrific imaginative play. There is no mess, no glue, no residue. Nothing but fun. Kids will probably want to play with them outside the bath, too.

DIY Jungle

Here is another Alex Toy that will suit any creative toddler. The Peg and Layer Jungle (also available as a farm) comes with 25 pegs and 20 soft foam shapes that kids can use to create their own jungle scene.

It helps develop fine motor skills and gives your little monkeys a chance to practice their animal sounds.

Tool Set

What Mr. or Miss Fix-It can do without a tool set? This is a classic gift for kids, and one that both boys and girls will thoroughly enjoy.

You can find a simple set that includes a hammer, screwdriver, and a few nuts and bolts (large wooden or plastic ones, that is) or an elaborate tool bench worthy of a toddler pro.

It depends on your budget – and how many little bolts you want to accidentally step on, on Christmas morning.

Top 10 Christmas Gifts for Toddlers

Tea Party Set

Another staple of childhood. Tea parties appeal to the imagination, and they are great for developing social and motor skills.

Plastic is the best material because it is so durable, and since boys like parties, too, you can find sets today in bright primary, gender-neutral colors.

A toddler cannot have enough blocks. They may be too young for smaller Legos, but bigger, chunkier blocks, such as those made by Mega Bloks, are ideal. They are bright and fit together easily so children can be towers, bridges, and other fun buildings without frustration.

Play Food

You could have a future chef on your hands. Most children love to play with food, and today, there is a great selection of wooden and plastic toys that help them cook, boil, bake, and fry endless meals. You can find anything from pizza to sushi, and many come with play knives for extra fun. Add some pots and pans and utensils, and you have the ingredients for hours of creative play and delicious dishes!

Chunky Puzzles

To help with motor development and thinking skills, puzzles are a perfect choice for toddlers. A wonderful choice is Melissa and Doug’s 10-Piece Magnetic Bug Catching Game. It comes with 10 removable pieces that kids can take on and off with the magnetized “bug catcher.” This adds a fun twist to the classic chunky wooden puzzle.

Have Fun With It

There are so many great toys out there; the problem is choosing just a few! It’s no wonder toddlers’ rooms look like toy stores. Well, maybe a messy one, but still!

Or Go With a Train Set!

With Christmas right around the corner, people with little ones on their gift list should be sure to read this hub and get some ideas. Best not to leave these things 'til the last minute lest the perfect gift be sold out.
