Memories of Christmas at Mama's House
A house filled with love
As another Christmas holiday comes to a close, I'm reminded of my childhood X-mas past. As I was preparing my holiday meal, I thought of my beloved mom. She cooked some of the best dishes that you could think of. She would prepare collard greens with hamhocks or smoked turkey, baked ham, potato salad, macaroni & cheese, turkey & dressing, homemade cranberry sauce, 10 sweet potato pies, and assorted cakes. Mom would always start cooking several days ahead with our help so that she could enjoy her company. The stereo would be playing "This Christmas" and other holiday tunes as we helped her get our meal together.
I can recall one Christmas, I was about seven or eight years old. Santa had brought me a doll named "Cinnamon". This doll had long, flowing brown hair and big brown eyes. Also, there was a knob on the doll's back that I could turn back and forth to adjust the length of her ponytail. I had so much fun with this doll. My sisters and I had all sorts of toys. Easy bake ovens, dishes, board games and all kinds of goodies in our "fruit bags". I truly treasured these memories as a child. Our Christmases were filled with love, hours & hours of playing with our toys, and lots of fond memories for many years to come.
When our company came by, they were always amazed of how much food my mom had prepared for her family. Of course they would eat and then take a plate to go. We would laugh and talk about our family history and other happenings in our lives. We would see who could do the latest dances. It was so much fun. I find myself becoming sentimental when I think of all of the times that we shared during the holidays. Whenever I cook, I tend to go back to those days when my mom was in the kitchen. I would ask her all sorts of questions in regards to her cooking. All her advice paid off......because now that I have a family, I cook the same meals for them. All I can say is that there are hardly any leftovers. What I wouldn't give to see my mom in my kitchen helping me prepare one of her famous dishes. Merry Christmas Mom!!!!!!!!!!
