Costume Ideas for Letter I
Costume Ideas Starting With The Letter I
When you don't want to seem too restrictive with a chosen theme, giving your guests a letter as the basis of the theme is quite common and can make for some very interesting ideas for outfits. You have a few options...
Allow guests to dress up in a costume related to their initials (or just first name if you want to narrow their choices)
Ask guests to dress up in costumes related to your initials
Choose 1 or 2 letters that they have to find a related costume for.
To be honest, when you first send out your invitations, many of your guests will be very confused as to what you are asking. I would suggest that in the invitation you do give them a quick explanation or point them at this lens. If your guests are confused, they may not even attempt to dress up, or worse, not attend your party.
I would include some costume suggestions for various letters, just to get their brain cells working a bit. If you really want to help, why not print out this page, and my other letter-related hubs so you have a complete A-Z list of possible costumes.
This hub concentrates on costumes beginning with I. I has proven to be quite difficult and there is not a great amount of choice to be honest. Look for links to my other alphabet hubs if you also need help for another letter. If you have any great ideas for costumes for the letter I, pop them in the comments box at the end and I will add them in. I can answer all your costume related questions on any subject, just write them in the comment box.

Costumes Starting With The Letter I
Invisible Woman is one of the Fantastic Four, who are Marvel Comics characters. Having been exposed to space radiation, she can turn her body invisible. As a costume idea, it's difficult to see this working, but an official costume consisting of a blue jumpsuit with black trim and a '4' logo on the front breast is available.
The Imperial Guard is one of the many types of soldiers from Star Wars, and although probabaly not a first choice for a costume idea, it wouldn't be too hard to do. The outfit of these warriors is a very long, hooded, red robe that covers the user from top to bottom and then a red mask covering the face. You can also get a weapon to finish the rest of the costume off.
Depending on the amount of detail you want with this costume it can either be a fairly simple one or a very hard one. Inspector Gadget is a character most famous for the sheer number of gadgets that emerge from his hat at times. A costume based off of this character would consist of mainly a long trench coat (preferably in grey), a fedora, and some neat black shoes. It doesn't generally matter too much what you wear below, only because Inspector Gadgets coat was always done up. You can try to add a gadget type detail to the hat if you like, however this could be very time consuming and in most cases would not be needed.
International Rescue is just another name used for the Thunderbirds. The series is due for a remake in 2015, but we are promised that there won't be major changes and you can generally picture the kind of costume you would need for one of these characters. It is possible to get some great costumes based on the Thunderbirds team, however it could be just as interesting to make them, and it also wouldn't require much effort. For this you would need a blue top and trousers, some matching boots (or overboots), a matching hat and a large coloured sash, the colour you pick for this would depend on the character you wanted to dress as. If the Thunderbird pilots don't appeal, there's always 'English Agent' Lady Penelope.

Indian woman (Native American)
This is a very simple costume idea as dressing up like an Indian is very easy. All you really need for this idea is a long dress with some patterns and possible some tassles hanging from it however . The only other part you really need for this costume is a headdress, which are easy enough to get. If you would like to add more, then you can add such accessories as beaded necklaces and weapons such as a bow and arrows, a tomahawk, a spear or just a small knife - you could even add warpaint if you're creative. We stock a large range of indian accessories.
Indian Man (Native American)
This costume idea is again an easy one to put together. There are various costumes available to purchase but again, there is a huge choice of indian accessories to help you to complete your outfit. You could be a chief with a large headdress, or keep it more simple as a Brave
Indian Woman (Sari)
As an idea for a costume, this can be a surprising one as a lot of people only think of the native American Indians, they can be wonderful costumes due to the comfort of them, not to mention the vivid and interesting colours you they can be. A sari is considered to be the national outfit for Indian women and as such is the ideal choice for this idea. Male costumes are also available to purchase - see image gallery further down on this page.
For some, inspired by 'The Godfather' movies, Italy is famous for its Mafia. Wear a standard gangster costume, or put your own costume together with the large range of gangster accessories that are available to purchase.

This is a very open idea so there as such, is no 'wrong' way to do it, it is simply your own interpretation, although the recent Disney 'Frozen' film might influence you. Generally though the costume would be White, Silver or a Light Blue. The overall costume idea would most likely be a long, flowing dress or gown as well, but it is entirely up to you if you decide to use this idea. Accessories for this would be simple like a headdress/tiara and maybe some face paint if you like in the design of frost. You could also use some old Christmas icicle decorations to help you to get the desired look.
Right, now this is a bit of a sneaky one, because Leprachauns are usually associated with Ireland already and therefore don't need the Irish part in the title. However it is here as a suggestion. Irish Leprachauns are a good idea because they allow for a lot of different ideas and customization within the costume. There are a number of different costumes you can purchase but it can be just as satisfying making a costume as you can buy a large amount of accessories for it. Generally for this costume you would need a green top and trousers (or a green dress for a woman) and then just generally build around this with maybe a small pot or bag of gold and a hat.
Now this is an interesting costume, Imhotep was an Egyptian figure who has been portrayed in different way, depending on the source. The most well known source would be the film 'The Mummy', which, if you are basing the costume off of this character then it is again quite an easy costume to do as it doesn't require a huge amount of effort to make a good costume. If you are however basing the idea off of the famous Imhotep from history then you would need to go for a more traditional egyptian outfit from around 2000 BC.
An Imp is again an interesting idea because they have been portrayed in a lot of different ways and as such you can't necessarily get it wrong. An Imp is considered to be similar to a demon or even a fairy in certain circumstances. They are considered to be fallen fairies and as such are a lot more mischievous then anything else. A costume idea based off an Imp could be difficult depending on your attention to detail. You most likely need a lot of body paint for this idea as the skin colour of an Imp is traditional a dark grey or dark brown. Clothing would most likely be just a loincloth or something small to cover yourself up. Getting horns to wear on your head would be a good idea as well.
Incredible (Mr) Costume
Dressing as an Infant is not too bad a choice. It is quite easy to get adult sized diapers along with pacifiers and bottles. If this idea doesn't strike you so well, then you could also dress in a full size, pyjama outfit and then just accessorize it with a bonnet, a blanket and maybe a dummy. It gives you a nice choice as well as you can use practically any colour you like, although blue would be considered the norm for boys, and pink for girls.
An insect is a fairly varied idea for a costume, as it leaves a lot of choice, for example you could go as a butterfly, a bee, a ladybug or a dragonfly. Depending on which of these you pick, it can be an easy one, or a hard one as there are different amounts of accessories available for them. The easiest accessories being things like wings and headboppers. However there are a lot of choices when it comes to Bee's and Ladybug's and butteflies - we even stock dragonfly wings. Males might prefer to with a Fly costume of some sort - there are a few on the market - but just make sure they don't lurk around the food!
Wear a standard elephant costume, or, if you do not want to dress up in a full elephant costume, why not just wear grey and then purchase an elephant face bop, or overhead mask (you could wear a turban to underline the 'Indian' element..
Wear a standard tiger costume, or, if you do not want to dress up in a full tiger costume, why not just wear grey and then purchase a tiger face bop, or overhead mask. For the more extrovert, there are opportunities for a face & body paint design here.

And, even more I Ideas...
Another name for an armed rebellion, often against the governing body. It is commonly thought that all insurgents are terroists, but this is not necessarily the case. Wear this costume with care - you do not need to offend anybody.
Icarus was a is a character from Greek mythology, best known for his attempt at flying out of his exile area in Crete. Unfortunately he flew too close to the sun and all the wax holding his wings together melted, and he drowned in, what is now known as, the Icarian sea. To do a costume based off of this figure, you would be best off with a fairly normal ancient greek styled outfit, and then to finish it off, add some wings (or the remains of some wings) to the back of your costume.
An Icon costume is a funny idea. There is a wide range of costumes you could go as, however a lot of people might say that you have been somewhat cheeky as your paticular Icon doesn't start with the letter 'I'... Unless they do of course. Suggestions for an Icon could be Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, or, Michael Jackson or Madonna. I would however suggest this as a last resort for a costume, only because it is somewhat of a cheat.
Isambard Kingdom Brunel
Famous Victorian engineer. wear a victorian gentleman's costume, stovepipe top hat and large sideburns. Hold a fake cigar to complete the look.
