Costume Ideas for the Letter N
Costume Ideas For The Letter N
In recent years the idea of holding a party themed with a letter has rather caught on - it doesn't restrict guests too much and they can decide what to do within whatever money and time they're expending. Usually the letter in question is something to do with the hosts initial(s), but you can always increase the flexibility by allowing guests to dress as something with their initials - novel type of icebreaker when it comes to introductions!
This hub concentrates on the Letter N - a middle-of-the-alphabet type character commonly found in novel and innovative ideas. I've put a few suggestions together here, but the list is certainly not comprehensive and I'm sure once you've read the suggestions you can come up with some ideas of your own. If you're exceptionally proud of your idea and want to share it, contact me and it can be added at the next update. Equally, if you think there's an idea that's been missed, mention it. It's always good to hear from enthusiasts.

Napoleon Bonaparte - This historical figure became Emperor of France following the French Revolution. He was usually seen wearing the military uniform of the late 18th and early 19th century with a blue and gold jacket, white trousers and a red sash, finished off with a bicorn hat.
Naval Officer - This costume idea can cover a very wide range of outfits depending on the time period picked for the particular costume. Naval officers have had a number of different styles and colours as well depending on the type of ship they have been on and also depending on what country they come from. The most popular idea for this costume would be a white jacket and trousers (as in the US Naval Officer of 'An Officer and a Gentleman' and of course a white hat to match. An alternative suggestion is the Georgian Naval Officer as seen in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. The concept can also be used for Commander Bond.(as seen in 'The Spy Who Loved Me').
Navy - This is a really broad area as it allows for you to dress as any sort of outfit or costume falling into this category, as such you can dress as a captain, officer or just a sailor. There is also costumes for both men and women in these categories. Some of the more traditional costumes are just white sailors costumes with a dark blue finish and a doughboy styled hat. The costume can also be more of a dark blue colour as opposed to white, it pretty much just needs to have some white and some blue on them. Although a female may choose to 'disguise herself' as a cabin boy or the like (a good number of girls stowed away to be with their sweethearts), there are a good range of short n sexy naval-style outfits for females on the market.
NASA Astronaut - Not the easiest of costumes and also not the smallest or lightest, this is however an interesting idea and less likely to be worn by other partygoers. (It is also useful for 'Apollo 13 at a 90s Movies party. You may be able to find a replica suit at your hire store or on the Internet, but otherwise the attention to detail needed to make a good costume is quite high: The costume consists of a large white jumpsuit with a lot of insignia regarding NASA on it, along with attention to detail with the oxygen pipes etc. If you do also decide to get a helmet to go with this costume then it might be hard to make or buy one, but it would be well worth the effort to see people's responses to it.
Nurse - Now this is a classic choice for women to dress up as, mainly due to the fact that so many companies cater for this idea. This as a costume idea would simply be a long (or short) white dress with a red cross on the breast. You can also get a lot of accessories to go with this outfit, such as chokers, syringes, hats, white boots, garters, bags and bracelets. This idea is pretty much only limited by your imagination as there are so many things you can do with this costume, and with the current enthusiasm for zombies, as we come to Halloween, there are several Undead versions on the market!
Nun - Now this is a slightly different one to the ones above, however it is still a uniform of the church. Again with a nun's costume you can either go for a long or a short outfit depending on the style you would like. The clothing should be all black with a white collar, and a wimple. You can also get a cross for this costume as well just to finish it off. This idea is proving to be a very popular idea because it can cater for such a large amount of people, most notably because a lot of men are willing to dress as them as well! The outfit is also a possible choice for a 'Singalong-a-Sound of Music' event.
Ninja - Popular film characters amongst people, but often overlooked as a choice for fancy dress parties. There does also seem to be a lot of confusion between Ninjas, Samurais and general Eastern Warriors. Ninjas are fighters who kill using as much stealth as possible, however if they have no chance of doing it without being caught, they use the most opportune moment in which to strike and make a quick getaway. The clothing standard for these is usually a full black outfit of tight fitting clothing, and a balaclava to cover their faces. Weapoms-wise, Ninja's carry a lot of weapons, which you could mix and match for a costume. Weapons you can use are Sai, Shurikens, Kunai throwing Knife, a Kusara and many, many more, although you should be cautious about carrying anything that looks like a realistic weapon in public.

Neptune - Neptune (also known as Poseidon), the God of the Sea is not usually thought of as a costume, but does allow for quite a lot of potential. The colour should generally be blue/green to match the colour of the sea. Neptune is often depicted as having a long beard, along with a trident and a crown, and to be riding on the back of a large sea-horse. The outfit itself can just be something simple like a long robe with a neat trim and maybe some extra bits just hanging off to make the outfit look a little more... Wild.
Nosferatu - This character is essentially Dracula with a different name, and a different appearance. This character, which is based on a creature of the same name seen in an early silent horror movie of 1922, seems to be more hunched over then Dracula and also has no hair and pointy ears. A costume based off of this fictional character shouldn't be too difficult as he wears a fairly plain black outfit (top and trousers) and then has a long greeny grey jacket over the top. You do need a mask and gloves to complete the outfit, however, if you can't get these, then you will need to get body paint and some false nails, not to mention to false ear extensions and preferably a bald cap.
Noah - A biblical figure, best known for building a huge ark and taking two of every animal onto it for forty days and forty nights during the Great Flood. A costume based off of this man would be quite simple as he is always depicted in having a long, light brown robe and a long white beard. You can also add a Shepherd's Crook to complete the outfit. The image (lower down the page) shows a Jesus costume that could be adapted for Noah

Noddy - Noddy is a long established British children's character, initially the subject of many books by writer Enid Blyton but later also featuring in animated series'. He is well known for having brightly coloured clothing along with a large hat (plus bell), a bright yellow red dotted neckerchief. He's also known for his little yellow car and driving a little car, but although the car part may be a bit too much for a costume, it would be easy enough to get a costume based on this character.
Ninja Turtles - The Ninja Turtles are proving to be a very popular choice, as just about everyone knows who they are. The characters have been 'reinvented' several times, so chances are outfits can be found:, The costumes tend to come with full, one piece outfits to make you look like a turtle, a small mask to cover your eyes (which comes in four different colours) and an inflatable or padded shell to wear on your back. The only thing you would need to finish the costume off would be the weapons, however you may have a hard time finding the correct fake weapons to go with this costume.
Nightwing - Nightwing is a comic book character like Batman and Robin. The reason he is like those two characters specifically is because Nightwing used to be Robin before leaving Batman's shadow and taking on his own alter ego. This character design actually looks surprisingly like Batman's 'The Dark Knight' outfit, except it has a large, bat like design on the front in Blue (However I have also seen it a few times in Red).
Nightmare on Elm Street (Freddy Krueger) - A popular idea around Halloween, this is a costume that is very easy to find as a few companies do packaged costumes based on it, and there are several versions available (including a female Miss Freddy!). A major element to this costume is an olive green/red stripe jumper, . You could also wear plain brown trousers and a battered fedora/trilby. In order for this costume to work, though ,you need to have his claw-like weapon over your hand. The 'skin-burn' make-up (or an overhead mask of the character) is also essential.
Nora Batty - This is a character from the popular comedy series 'Last if the Summer Wine'. The costume based around this woman is quite an easy one to do as most of the clothing items can still be gotten quite easily and cheaply. For this costume you will just need a cardigan, a dress (preferably floral), a bag, and then again preferably a wig, with a lot of curlers in it.
Nerd - Now this is an easy costume, only because the stereotypical nerd is such a simple idea. It is easily possible to do this well and get the smaller accessories to add the finishing touches. There are a lot of films you can reference to kind of character to as well, the best example being 'Revenge of the Nerds'. This costume would best consist of a checkered shirt, high worn trousers held up braces with your socks on show, slicked back hair, big glasses (can also put tape round the middle for the finishing touch) and you can even get pocket protectors for the shirt pocket as another final touch.
