Costume Ideas for the Letter S

Updated on December 19, 2014

More Costume Ideas From The Fancy Dress Expert

Although people like to have a theme to their costume event (it gives them some terms of reference within which to work), you don't want to make the theme too restrictive that they feel put off the wholeidea and may not bother turning up. A theme based on a letter of the alphabet can be a good compromise: You choose it because it is relevant in some way - it's one of your initials, the first letter of the month or has some other dark significance. Your potential guests can then decide how much or little effort, expense and creativity they want to put in without too much pressure (that's all down to choosing the present or how fashionably late to be).

This lens is brought to you by the letter S, a letter which is often associated with plurals because adding it to a word makes it more - just right for couples costumes! In practice the letter offers a wide range of possibilities, quite a few of which are illustrated here. Chances are you can think of more - 'S' is not always for 'spoon-feeding' and I'm happy to take suggestions for additions, which can be added to updates from time to time.

If what you find here is not enough, then pop along to my website here for more fancy dress costumes and check out the list of theme-based blogs for extra help.

"The letter S" - What Can I Dress Up As?

Look below - we are here to help...

Soccer (Football) Player - This is so easy to dress up in as nearly every man and a lot of women will have a favourite football team. Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal just to name a few . If this is the case why not buy (or borrow from a supporting friend) their football kit and socks and become your favourite footballer for the day. If the kits are too expensive (or you do not have an obliging friend!) then a white T-shirt, black shorts and long white or black socks will do the trick.

Santa - Now everyone knows Santa a legendary figure who brings gifts to the homes of the good children during the late evening and overnight hours of Christmas Eve, December 24 - he wears a dark red white fur-trimmed robe and has a long white beard.

Sailor - Aside from a generic sailor, one of the best known character sailors that you could dress up as would be Popeye, the spinach-eating cartoon hero. For this look you will need, a blue two piece uniform with flared bell-bottom trousers, a round doughboy hat will complete the look. There is now a licensed Popeye costume available to purchase - complete with fake spinach tins.

Ladies have the option as going as a saucy sailor. There are many versions for sale on the market but they normally include and short white dress with matching hat. Men could always to chose as going as the Captain, for a more formal, and a look that will guarantee the attention of the ladies present! An American Naval Officer (as seen in 'An Officer and a Gentleman' and 'A Few Good Men') can also be a popular choice.

St Trinians - Anarchic school girls, originally created by British cartoonist Ronald Searle. To create this look, all you need is a school girl outfit (shirt, tie and short skirt), fishnet tights (best with rips in them), battered straw boater with ST on the crest. An easy costume to be able to put together yourself at home. Following recent 'reboot' St Trinians films, sexier versions of the outfits are available.
