Costumes And Halloween

Halloween History, Costume Ideas

Look Your Scary Best Come Hallows Eve

It’s that time of the year once more, where the mysterious becomes familiar and the familiar seems to become magical. Hallows Eve is fast approaching and you can practically smell the caramel of the candied apples. For kids of all ages in North America and elsewhere, Halloween is probably as exciting as Christmas, as it involves imagination, seasonal characters, parties and of course, treats.

Most of us don't realize that the tradition of Halloween actually has its roots in a Celtic tradition to commemorate the memory of loved ones who had passed away, which occurred at summer's end ("Samhain"). As civilizations rose and fell and cultures mingled with one another, the tradition of Halloween has arrived in the modern world as the darkly celebratory festival we know and love today.

Aside from all the sweet treats you can consume with abandon, this season is all about one thing—it’s time for dressing up! The best Halloween costume is limited only by your imagination. Rather than facing the horror of not finding something scary chic for the parties at the witching hour, you should have started your costume planning about a month ago. In case you haven't, here are...

Some Costume Ideas

You could always go with the tried and true homemade costumes—ghosts, zombies, vampires, witches, elves and fairies, depending on your preference to be hideous or to be dainty. One thing is for sure: these classic characters are classic for a reason—they work at all Halloween gatherings. The best part is that these are easy Halloween costumes for you to create.

The Power of Makeup

So how to come up with a homemade Halloween costume? For starters, turn yourself ghostly white with the help of makeup foundation. This should go well with a vintage gown or tuxedo complete with a tatter here and there and some random stains to complete the look.

Or perhaps, put on your favorite black ensemble, add a pointed hat, a wand and a broom. Voila, the wicked witch is in town! Whatever your choice, some extra effort on some fancy make-up work and you’re well over halfway to creating a memorable but easy homemade Halloween costume.

Many last-minute costume ideas take form by combining your own old formal wear, some well-conceived accessories and, of course artistic and generously applied makeup. Remember, 80% of the effect is in the attitude. So wear it like you mean it!

Contemporary and Trendy

If you’re not the type to go with a traditional Halloween guise, that's even better - there are a lot of contemporary ideas to choose from, from edgy to the entertaining. You could actually portray icons of today’s popular culture: go vintage with Marilyn Monroe for girls or Elvis Presley for guys; or perhaps you could dress up as the voluptuous Katy Perry, the outlandish Lady Gaga and even the magnanimous Steve Jobs.

Look for inspiration from the vast movie literature at hand. Go all blue with the characters from Avatar, or maybe glittery white with the likes of Edward and Bella.

But then, if you are looking for ways to dress up but would not like to be decked out in heavy make-up and skimpy outfits, an excellent alternative would be animal outfits – the cute bunny, the brave lion, the hyperactive monkey or even a butterfly.

These costume suggestions should get you started as we lead up to the festive evening, but what matters is that you choose something that works for you. This is actually what makes the best Halloween costume. More than anything, costumes are a great chance for self-expression, after all.

So have you decided on what to wear? Halloween night awaits.
