How to Create A Special Day For Grandparents & The Grandchild

Making Memories

Can you remember those special days with your grandparents when you were a child? Sometimes those special moments even involved cookies and baked goods for Grandparent's Day. Or, perhaps, you spent them reading stories together and doing puzzles. Not every memory, though, has to be made at home. Trips to a local zoo or park are other great ideas for a special day between grandparents and grandchildren.

Stay At Home, Fun with Food

Family settings are always special and what better way to provide a special day for grandparents and their grandchildren. Food is something that we all love and usually Grandma has a signature dish that everyone has grown to love, so why not ask her to bring that to the party?

Also provide easy games that everyone can play, like bocce ball, or croquet. These provide a comfortable environment for everyone along with some moments when someone does something spectacular provides everyone with some comic relief.

Family get-togethers also provide a unique way to celebrate something special, perhaps a birthday, or holiday. Memories of grilling out on a summer’s day with family are permanently stored on everyone’s minds. These days are held most dear for everyone involved. They also provide an opportunity for long lost relatives to gather together and share in something special.

A Furry Treat

Another idea to provide a special day for grandparents and grandchildren is a trip to the zoo. Zoos are great places to spark the imaginations of children and also the chance for Grandma and Grandpa to foster those dreams.

Perhaps there is a funny story to share about a previous encounter with an animal or just a ‘wow’ moment both grandparent and grandchild see or learn something they didn’t previously know. Oftentimes zoos have workshops and shows that provide a fun and educational setting for children and adults to take part in together.


This is a great gift for new grandparents, especially if they get to take the little ones to see new baby animals and celebrate the new lives all together.

Finding Fun Out-and-About

Finally, a trip to the park can be a great way to provide a special day for grandparents and grandchildren on Grandparent's Day. Parks are well manicured places of leisure where picnics and walks often carry the day away. Sitting under a tree listening to stories of “in my day we used to,” provide insight for the younger generation to look back into history through the eyes of someone they trust and hold dear.

This type of social interaction has been taking place for thousands of years and provide humans a way of passing on our history, our story. We would never know where we came from or how we got to where we are now without the stories from our elders. Parks sometimes have paddle boat rides on a lake or pond which can be a great photo op. Some parks have guided tours through historical land marks.

No matter what you decided to plan for a special day between grandparents and grandchildren, just being together really is what is most important, and life is frequently too busy to take time out to spend time with elders. Be sure to stop and take the time to set aside a day that can be spent enjoying those who you love.

      Pinkchic, Like the others, we didn't celebrate Grandparents day when I was growing up. However, my children do now and they love it. In our busy lives it is truly a treat for both grandparents and children to be able to shared a day dedicated just to them.

      Hi, I can never really remember doing anything with my grandparents as they were very old when I was young, but I do remember sitting with my gran watching TV and having a laugh sometimes, great ideas here, cheers nell

      We never celebrated Grandparents day when I was a kid, but I think it's great. Grandparents are very special to kids and kids are very special to grandparents. It's a match made in heaven and one that should be fostered.

      Although all of my grandparents have passed away, I have some really fond memories. My Dad's parents only lived about a mile from us so my siblings and I would ride our bikes over just about every afternoon for a chocolate chip cookie and a bottle of root beer or 7-up. Maybe that is where I got my sweet tooth:) Grandparent's Day is the perfect time to thank them for all the special things they do. Great hub!
