Creating Your Own "Insidious" Halloween Costume

Updated on October 11, 2016

Jeannie is a huge fan of Halloween and loves everything that is ghoulish. You can often find her reading or writing horror stories.

Improvising Can Go a Long Way with Your Insidious Halloween Costume

It is no secret I love the movie Insidious. It is pretty rare that any horror movies scare me, so when a movie comes along that actually terrifies me, I love it. Insidious is a movie about a child in a coma and the ghosts that start to surround his family because of it. Not only are there ghosts in the movie, there are a number of evil creatures. Insidious even has its own demon.

Insidious begins with very subtle images, but keeps going until the disturbing images are pretty much pounded into your skull. Insidious appeals to people who like subtle horror movies, but also people that just simply want to be scared to death. I guess you could say Insidious has something for everyone.

Since I feel so strongly about Insidious, naturally I would like to dress up in a nice Insidious-inspired Halloween costume this year. Much to my dismay, there are no official Insidious Halloween costumes. Oh well. A little taste of failure has never stopped me before and it won't stop me now. With a little creativity, anyone can easily create an Insidious Halloween costume.

The Evil Old Lady

One of the best villains in Insidious is the creepy old lady that has stalked Josh his entire life. She is creeping around pretty much the whole movie. So how can you become the creepy old Insidious lady? Her costume will not be too difficult.

Get yourself an old dress and a veil. You should try to get an old lady mask, but you can also improvise with make-up. Don't forget to buy a scruffy wig. It won't hurt to carry around a candle just to add to the look. Make sure to get a fake battery-operated candle. When wearing a big wig and a veil, you can never be too careful.

The Insidious Demon

When you think Insidious, surely you think red demon. The demon that haunts little Dalton is the main villain throughout the movie, yet we don't get to see him as much as we'd like. If you would like to step it up, remember the demon was described as:

  • Having fire for a face
  • Hooves for feet
  • Knives for fingers (but not like Freddy Krueger)

With that in mind, you are going to need some type of red outfit, preferably a body suit. The hooves looked a lot like boots, so you could probably wear big boots and pull off that look. The knives for fingers won't be as easy, but the knives looked gold, so some gold gloves will work. If you can find shiny gloves, even better. Don't forget the red face paint since this is the most important aspect of the outfit.

If you are throwing a Halloween party, by all means, try to find the song, "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" to really compliment the outfit.

You Can Achieve an Insidious Look at Home...

Creepy Doll Girls

While Josh and Dalton have their adventures in "The Further" they encounter the creepy doll girls. Since this look is totally creepy, even if someone has not seen the movie, surely this is a winning costume.

Basically, you only need a nice, white dress and some make-up. One can just use pale white foundation and apply the make-up to resemble a doll's face. You can buy clown make-up at pretty much any store during Halloween shopping season for about $2; this works perfectly to white out your face. If you can find a friend that wants to be super creepy with you, that makes the look all the more perfect. Don't forget - all you have to do is just stand and smile!

Personally, I have been on a search to find the dresses shown in the photo. I have not been able to find this online; of course, this is a terrible time of year to search for a white dress. However, I am convinced a dress like this can be found at a thrift store or an older relative's closet.

If you are interested in dressing like the ghost mother that stars in Insidious Chapter 2, you can slightly alter the doll girl look. She simply wears more eye shadow and pulls her hair back in a tighter bun. You can wear an old gown or a ruffled shirt to achieve her look.

A Really Great How-To Makeup Video I Found

Many families have a unique idea of spending quality family fun-time together. If everyone in your family wants to get in the spirit, there is no reason why a small child should not dress like Dalton for Halloween. After all, Dalton's costume is going to be the easiest to make.

Just put some red plaid pajamas on your son (or daughter... who am I to judge?) and add some pale make-up to his face. Tell him to just stand around and look tired, and you have a Dalton costume. Perhaps he would like to walk around in a creepy trance just for good measure. A good time will be had by all!

Having an Insidious Party

Now that you've had a great time planning your Insidious Halloween costume, why not consider throwing an Insidious Halloween party? You can buy all 3 Insidious movies and have a viewing party. You could also listen to some Tiny Tim. You can have a costume contest to see which one of your guests can come up with the most creative costume. After all, we haven't even discussed dressing like the two ghost hunter guys or the ugly ghost dude that seems to be out to kill Renee. There are plenty of fun Insidious Halloween costume options, so why not have a party and have a little fun with the whole idea?

Thank you both for your comments. Yes, Insidious is a movie full of great costume ideas. The simplicity of the doll girls is probably my favorite look. Oh, and you do need to check out the movie, Movie Master. It won't win any Oscars, but it is pretty cool.

Yes, this is very true. Also, I kind of don't have too much choice if I want to go with an Insidious costume. It is OK. Most movie costumes never look that authentic anyway. Thanks for the comment!

I think you can have a lot more fun trying to create your own costume than buying one ready made because you are more actively involved.
