Cupcake Toppers...from Paper to Fondant
Cupcakes offer a small, but versatile canvas
Cupcakes are a wonderful dessert to serves at lots of different occasions. Over the past couple of years I have been making cupcakes from my home (Cupcakes by Becca). I really enjoy it, but the part I love best is being creative with how they are decorated. No longer is the cupcake limited to just the typical swirl of icing, but very elaborate detail is being given to these individual cups of cake.
While the "canvas" is small, the possibilities are endless for decorating. I love that it also leaves a bit more room for error. If you mess up on a cupcakes, simply wipe the frosting off and start over. Cakes have always made me nervous because you run the risk of messing up the whole thing and not always having an easy fix.
I'd like to share some of the ways I've decorated some cupcakes in the past.

Paper Cupcake Toppers
One of the simplest ways to decorate a cupcake is to create paper cupcake toppers. They are quick, easy, and very inexpensive. Typically I will design a cupcake topper on Microsoft Word on my MacBook and then print them on card stock. I have one of those handy 2in circle punches that I use to quickly "cut" each topper. A toothpick is then glued or taped to the back of each topper…and TA DA, cupcake topper complete! Easy peasy!!!
Snacks & Candies as Decorations
Sometime when I decorate cupcakes I will used various candies or other food items to complete a project.
Who doesn't love reindeer and especailly these adorable Rudolph cupcakes! They were made using pretzels for antlers, candy eyes, vanilla wafers and red M&M's for the nose. So easy and a fun treat for kids!
We host an annual CornFest at our church for our youth group. Last year I made ears of corn from cupcakes by using jelly beans for the kernels and yellow Starbursts for pieces of butter.
There are so many ingenious and creative ideas using everyday candies and snacks. Two books I've used often for ideas and inspiration are "Hello, Cupcake!" and "What's New, Cupcake?"
"What's New, Cupcake?"
One of the most versatile materials to use for cupcake decorating is fondant. This moldable "dough" is great for creating flat or 3-D decorations. I often use fondant to decorate cupcakes. Take a look at several ways fondant has been used to decorate cupcakes!

The Simple Swirl
While decorations can be fun and add a lot to your cupcakes, sometimes the simple swirl is still my choice for how to decorate. You sure can's beat a beautifully frosted cupcake :)
