Decoration Ideas for a Mardi Gras Party

Updated on January 17, 2011

Are you planning to host a Mardi Gras party this year? If so, you’ll want to deck your house out with appropriate purple, green and gold decorations to help everyone get in the spirit.

Whether you live in a community that holds formal Mardi Gras celebrations or if you just want to help your friends and family get in the spirit and Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler, your party is sure to be a hit if you decorate properly (and prepare a terrific Mardi Gras theme menu, of course)!

Decoration Ideas for a Mardi Gras Party

The “official” colors of Mardi Gras are purple, green and gold, so they should definitely be included in your decorating plan. Each of the colors has a special meaning. Green represents justice, green represents faith and gold represents power. Here are a few suggestions for ways that you can deck your halls for your Mardi Gras celebration!

Mardi Gras Wreath

Make sure that your guests are already in a Mardi Gras mood when they ring your doorbell by placing a Mardi Gras theme wreath on your front door. You can purchase one at a local home décor or crafts store or make one yourself by adorning a plain grapevine or Styrofoam wreath base with purple, green and gold ribbon, beads and ornaments.

If you have interior doors that will be visible to guests during the party, consider placing additional wreaths on some or all of them.

Mardi Gras Beads

If you’ve ever been to a Mardi Gras parade, you know that beads are among the most popular items that onlookers scramble to catch as masked revelers toss them from floats. Mardi Gras beads are a must-have item for your party.

Give a few strands to each guest to wear and use them as decorative elements in your home. You can loop beads together to create Mardi Gras garland and fill glass vases with beads to lend a special touch to your countertops and centerpieces. You can even place bead strands on the buffet table in between the platters.

Mardi Gras Tree

If you have an artificial Christmas tree, consider setting it up and decorating it for Mardi Gras. Wrap strands of purple, green and gold beads around the tree as garland, or hang them so that they drape from branches. Add some ornaments or bows in the appropriate colors and you’ll have a lovely focal point decoration set up in no time at all.

Additional Suggestions?

There are many other things you can do to decorate your home appropriately for a Mardi Gras party. Please feel free to add any ideas and tips that you’d like to share in the comments section below!
