Easy & Crafty Patriotic Candles
- Straight-sided votive candle holders (like these from amazon.com)
- 1.5 inch wide red & white stripe grosgrain ribbon (Offray monostripe red is shown)
- 5/8 inch wide blue & white dot grosgrain ribbon (Offray Swissdot shown)
- Double-sided tape
- Navy blue card stock
- Parchment or vellum
- Small star paper punch
- 3/8 inch red grosgrain or twill ribbon
- White card stock
To create the flag-inspired votive, simply wrap the red and white striped ribbon around the votive holder, overlapping 1/2 inch, and cut the ribbon. Repeat with the blue and white dot ribbon. Then, secure in place with double sided tape. Add a votive or tealight candle.
Navy Star Votive
Measure the height of the votive cup and transfer the measurement to the navy blue card stock. Cut a strip along the long side; you'll have a strip of card stock 11 inches long x the height of the votive up.
Wrap the card stock strip around the votive, overlapping about 1/2 inch and cut the card stock.
Repeat this measuring and cutting process with the vellum or parchment paper.
Using the paper punch, punch star shapes randomly from the navy card stock.
Wrap the vellum around the votive cup and secure with double-sided tape. Repeat with the navy card stock. Insert a votive or tealight candle.
White Star Votive
Cut a strip of navy card stock from the long side of the paper, 1.5 inches wide. (The strip will be 11 inches x 1.5 inches.)
Wrap the strip around the votive cup, overlapping about 1/2 inch. Cut, then secure in place with double-sided tape.
Wrap the red ribbon around the votive, overlapping about 1/2 inch. Cut then secure in place with double-sided tape.
Using a word processing program's clip art library or shape tool, print two stars about 1.5 inches in height on white card stock. Cut out the stars. Place on either side of the votive cup with double-sided tape.
Insert a votive or tealight candle.
