Reality of Eid Milad un Nabi - Importance of 12th Rabi ul Awal for Muslims.

Updated on December 21, 2015

Eid Milad un Nabi

Eid Milad un Nabi is celebrated on 12th day of Rabi ul Awal of every year by the Muslims all over the world. This day has a great importance in the history of Islam as this is the birthday of Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). So keeping in view the significance of the day, Muslims of the whole world celebrate this day as Eid very enthusiastically.

How the Muslims Celebrate Eid Milad Un Nabi

On the day of Eid e Milad un Nabi, the Muslims used to observe fasting, they offer darood-o-salam on the holy prophet (PBUH) and arrange congregations of naat sharifs (poetic praise of holy prophet). Though every Muslims used to offer darood o salam on the holy prophet (peace be upon him) every day but this particular practice is done on that particular day with some exception. Muslims also used to distribute sweets among children and poor.

Observing fast on the day of Eid-e-Millad un Nabi is in accordance with Sunnah of Holy Prophet (Peace be upon him) because the holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) used to observe fast on every Monday. When he was asked about the reason, he said that Monday is his birthday so they observe fasting on this particular day of the week to thank God.

History / Tradition of Eid Milad Un Nabi

Traditions of celebration of the birth day of the holy prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) in Indo-Pakistan spread over centuries. There are also narrations in the history books that the ancients Arab governors started to celebrate this event with full zeal and zest. The day of Eid Milad un Nabi is declared as public holy in Pakistan and many other Muslim countries like Bangladesh, Indonasia, Algeria, Egypt. There are 47 countries in the World where Eid Milad un Nabi is a public holday.

Celebration on Eid Milad un Nabi

Eid Milad Un Nabi and Muslim Unity

Eid Milad Un Nabi gives us the message of Unity. We are the Ummah of one Prophet i.e. Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon Him). Our Lord is one i.e. Allah (subhan-o-hu-wa-Taala) and we follow one book i.e. Quran.

In this era when the Muslims are divided in many sects this event of Eid Milad un Nabi could prove to be a great source of their unity, as their sects may be different but the source of believes of every sect is only one and that is Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him).

Controversies over Eid Milat un Nabi

However, this holy event has been made controversial by some of the Muslim sects. So there are many arguments in favor and against this holy event. Both the groups quote certain verses of Quran and Ahadiths of Holy Prophet (Peace be upon him) in favor and against the celebration of the birth day of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him).

Eid Millad un Nabi

Is Eid Milad Un Nabi a Bidaat - A new Thing in Islamic law

The main objection over the celebration of the birth of Holy Prophet (Peace be upon him) is that this is a bidaat (a new invention in the religion). However, there is a great difference in the definition of the term 'bidaat'. The group in favor of the Eid Milad un nabi says that even if it is accepted that it is a bidaat, it is a good one, like Taraveeh, which was declared by Hazrat Umer as Bidaat-e-hasanah. Hazrat Umer while declaring it as Bidaat on the same moment said, "what a good bidaat that is?". So, he preferred to continue this good bidaat, which is still in existence though there is no evidence of offering taraveeh in a congregation by the Holy Prophet in the month of Ramdan.

The important thing is tolerance. The people of different sects should respect the beliefs of others. If someone wants to celebrate Eid e Milad un Nabi, other has no right to object and create any hurdle or resist.

To me, it is very easy to settle this issue. The group against Eid Milad un Nabi should tolerate those who celebrate the Eid Milad un nabi, by just separating themselves from such like people who show their love and affection for the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him).

This is the month of Rabi ul Awal and soon Muslims of India, Bagladesh and Pakistan would celebrate Eid Milad un Nabi. However, on this day we should not forget the Shohodas of bomb blast on Eid Milad un Nabi in Karachi. On this sad day so many innocent Muslims were killed in a brutal suicidal attach at Karachi.

Interesting, Firdousi0...! Things that you have to know is the celebration of Nabiyullah Muhammad Salallaahu 'Alahi Wasallam (SAW) birth day is not only found in the three country that you stated. In Indonesia, it is one of the national holiday and appreciated nationally by our government. We do (always) various activities just to remind of the struggle of Rasulullah SAW since he was born until he closed his eyes........!
