Essential Halloween Decorations For Your House and Yard

Everyone loves a house that's decorated for Halloween, They're eye-catching and entertaining. There are so many ways that you can decorate your home and yard for Halloween. you can make it as spooky or as fun as you like. Check out these ideas awesome, must have Halloween decorations for your yard and inside the house.

Halloween Lighting Ideas

Lighting is one of the most important and often forgotten aspects of Halloween decorating. If you place decorations outside of your house or in the yard, you want people to be able to see them at night when it's dark. Having a porch light on alerts trick-or-treaters that your home has candy to offer. As well, you would like to keep the area illuminated so it's safe for people to walk. If you have a dark or narrow pathway to your door, it may be difficult for some people to navigate.

There are multiple options for lighting your yard and different areas of your home for Halloween. You can get different colored bulbs to place in your existing lanterns or outdoor lamps, you can purchase garland lights to illuminate walkways, you can purchase strobe lights to create a spooky atmosphere, and the list goes on.

Spider Webs

Spider webs are an easy and typically affordable way to decorate your home for Halloween, both inside and outside depending on the type of webs you use. You can purchase an assortment of these. you can get plastic or rubber spider webs that your hang up in corners, on windows, or on you walls.

You can also purchase fabric spider web material that you use to create your own realistic and creepy looking spider webs and cobwebs. You just stretch out the material as much as you like and use tape or corners to attach the material and keep it from moving. You can even use it outdoors on bushes, trees, or fences. Placing lights behind it or nearby will give a super spooky illusion.

Don't forget to get your spiders if you're going to have webs. If you get several spiders you can place them in different areas or clutter them together and surely give anyone with arachnophobia a scare. Use string to hang them from ceilings or have them appear as though they're coming through the webs from above.


Tombstones are a really fun way to decorate your yard for Halloween and are great for inside the home as well. You can create your own tombstones using a variety of materials such as wood, plastic, or Styrofoam. Just make sure they can stand the weather and hold themselves up. Pokers or sticks of some type are typically used to keep them standing and still in the ground. Just get some grey colored paint and black paint or a black marker to write the epitaphs.

You can also purchase ready made tombstones from a variety of places. usually they're made of a plastic material and have a variety of sayings on them.

You can have tombstones by themselves or add decorations to them. you can place small dirt piles in front to make them more realistic looking, or place fake bones in front of them poking out of the ground.


Skeletons are found in all shapes and sized during Halloween. You can get plastic ones, glass ones, rubber ones, papers one, and everything in between.

They're great to hang in the window, on your door, used to decorate your yard depending on which type you have. You can purchase full skeletons or separate skeleton bones. The bones would look really neat placed in front of a prop tombstone.


Coffins go well with the Halloween theme. they're not as easy to find as some of the other decorations but they can certainly add a nice touch to your collection. If you are talented enough you make your own.

You can use them to place in your yard and they would look great and really add to a cemetery theme. You can also use them to place things in such as bones or cobwebs.


Pumpkins and Jack o Lanterns are very much Halloween themed. You can purchase real pumpkins from a variety of stores during the Fall and Halloween season and carve them any way you like and place lights or candles inside to make them glow. You can also choose to color or paint them if you don't want to carve them.

Alternatively, you can purchase a variety of pumpkins. They come in so many colors, shapes and sizes it's unbelievable. You can find scary ones or happy ones, whatever you like. However you look at it, pumpkins and Jack o Lanterns are perfect Halloween decorations.

Witches and Witch Accessories

Witches are another symbol of Halloween. There are scary witches, funny witches, happy witches, and everything in between.

There is a huge variety of witch decorations available. You can find paper or plastic decorations for your windows or even 3D witches that you can place in your yard, on the floor, or hang from the ceiling.

As well, you can always just get witch accessories such as a hat and broom and place those somewhere. Make it look like a witch lives in the house!


Bats are a pretty neat Halloween decoration. You can get the kind that can be displayed on your window or door or you can buy bats that can be hung from your ceiling.

If you have an entrance way that you are decoration or plan on dressing up your living room, they're a great addition when hung from ceiling and corners. You can even cover them with some fake cobwebs or spider webs.


Ghosts are another symbolic Halloween decoration. You see them everywhere during this time of year.

Ghost decorations are quite easy to make yourself and there are a lot of different types you can create. You can also purchase a variety of ghost decorations from stores or online. They add a very nice touch to any Halloween themed yard or home and are pretty much a must have decoration.


Candles are great to have any time of the year but are especially fun for Halloween. They can add a creepy glow and ambiance to any room. They can also be placed in spooky, Halloween themed candle holders. If you can find them, there are some candles that are specifically decorated just for halloween with pictures and figures such as spiders or blood on them.

Fog Machines

Fog machines ad a really nice, extra touch to a Halloween themed yard or home. Some of them are not able to be used outside so you need to read the instructions carefully before using a fog machine. Fog machines also come in different strengths so that some travel further than others and some cover more area faster than others.

A fog machine makes it look spooky and mysterious and it's an excellent Halloween decoration and prop.

      Some of the houses near our area have really neat displays also. I've always loved decorating for Halloween. Luckily we have a lot of trick-or-treaters in the neighborhood to enjoy it :)

      I love Halloween !! I used to love taking the kids out when they were little, some of the houses had awesome displays.
