Fabulous Fall Decor
When my children were little Halloween decorations consisted of paper punkins and window clings. As they have gotten older my Halloween/fall decor has become more sophisticated. In 2007 I came up with the idea for Fred. We had several blank white masks in my studio, so we built a man out of clothed and news paper stuffing. He looks so real when we are done that everyone tries to talk to him. This was the beginning of my serious Halloween decorating.
That year we had a a quarter acer decorated with everything from a graveyard to a fountain that glowed. Inside the house our decorations are much cuter. Some people will look at what we have accumulated and think we spent a fortune. In reality I pick up dollar store items and make them work. Almost all the masks are dollar store, after Halloween sale, or thrift store finds. It doesn’t take much to get that creepy feel.
One of my favorite Halloween decorations is the old style tags and ribbon. Years ago when I got my first printer I printed off about a 100 old fashioned card fronts from the internet. I cut out the pictures and glued them to purple and black tags. Then I strung them on ribbon. These tags are so charming no matter where I use them. They look like something from the 50’s and they are so easy to make.
I love to have pumpkins all over the house in the fall. The last two years real pumpkins have been so expensive that I started picking up the Styrofoam pumpkins. I have them in all shapes and sizes. My favorite thing to do with them is put them on a Pedestal or the top of a candle holder. When they are grouped they look elegant and fun.
Fall is about leaves. Leaves can be used on tables, in jars, or as a valance. If you are feeling really ambitious you can make a mobile out of leaves and every-time there is movement in the room they will look like they are falling. I like to take a handful of fake leaves and place them in a circle and put my center pieces on top of them. After Halloween I remove the Halloween decorations and adjust the fall decorations to feel like home rather than Halloween.
Just because something is not usually used for Fall does not mean it won’t work. Th counter display where I made oranges into pumpkins is a fun use of items that are the right color but usually have nothing to do with the season. With a little imagination and things you have around your house you can personalize your Halloween/fall decor.
