Fancy Dress Costume Ideas For The Letter G

Costume Ideas For The Letter G

Giving your guests a letter as a costume theme is quite common and can make for some very interesting ideas for costumes. You have a few options...

1) Allow guests to dress up in a costume related to their initials (or just first name if you want to narrow their choices)

2) Ask guests to dress up in costumes related to your initials

3) Choose 1 or 2 letters that they have to find a related costume for.

To be honest, when you first send out your invitations, many of your guests will be very confused as to what you are asking.

I would suggest that in the invitation you do give them a good explanation. If your guests are confused, they may not even attempt to dress up, or worse, not attend your party.

I would include some costume suggestions for various letters, just to get their brain cells working a bit. If you really want to help, why not print out this page, and my other hubs so you have a complete A-Z list of possible costumes.

In this hub we will concentrate on costumes beginning with G.

Look for links to my other alphabet hubs if you also need help for another letter. If you have any great ideas for costumes for the letter G, pop them in the comments box at the end and I will add them in.

Lets have a look at some costume suggestions for the letter G

Gangster There are few criminals that get the adoration and publicity of mobsters. Gangsters are revered, feared, and hated all at the same time. The mythology that surrounds men like Al Capone and "Bugs" Moran, found it's foothold in the 1920s with the help of prohibition. The classic 20's gangster has a double breasted two or three-piece dark suit(usually pin-striped), black shirt, white tie, trilby and spats over black shoes. Traditionally he is armed with a machine gun, but for legal/safety reasons many toy machine guns come in unrealistic colours so any gun and shoulder holster should suffice. We stock gangster costumes to sell, or hire and have a large range of gangster accessories to either complete your costume, or to make your own outfit up at home.

Gangster's Moll The mistress of a gangster, or it could be a partnership, such as Bonnie & Clyde. Either a pinstriped two-piece skirt suit to match male companion, worn with a long coat, beretand a gun. Alternatively 1920s flapper dress, headband and a feather boa. We stock both styles of 'moll' and supply all the accessories you will need to complete your costumes.

Goth Wear all black clothing and a black wig. You will need a very pale face and dark eyes and either black, dark or red lips. Black nail varnish and crosses will help to complete the look. A lot of gothic costumes are used at Halloween, so ladies can go for a beautiful full length costume as well.

Gandalf Gandalf is a Wizard from The Lord of the Rings, the popular books written by J R R Tolkien. This costume idea is an easy one as it consists of a long grey or white robe (depending on whether you do his costume before he went to the Nether-world or after his return). You would also need a large hat matching the same colour as the robe. You can also get a few more accessories like a small satchel and a belt.

Goldilocks This is a traditional story book character, which can be created by just a short frilly dress, pop socks and a gold or blonde bunched or plaited wig. Open to your own interpretation.

George Washington(1732 - 1799) First President of the USA. Wear a standard Georgian costume, plus white wig.

Ghost A simple costume to put together - the choice is yours. It can be as easy as just wearing a white sheet over your head, or purchasing a ready made costume. We also sell large chains that would help you to complete your outfit. An alternative is white or pale clothing and matching ghostly make-up

Grease Characters You have a good selection of characters to choose from. You may want to go as a T-Bird or a Pink Lady, but you could also wear standard 50s costumes, or, if you're brave enough Sandy's black top and very tight trousers in the final scene! Maybe a good choice for a group of you.

Gary Glitter 1970s Glam rockstar. Fell from grace dramatically in the 90's. You will need to wear a space suit with wide shoulders, black hair and as high as you dare platform boots.

Genghis Khan A Mongolian Conqueror, a warrior and then a ruler. For a costume based off of this historical figure you would usually wear a costume with plate or chain armour over the chest and arms. Should also use a large helmet with animal fur hanging from both sides. Geeks This is actually becoming a more popular costume idea as Geeks are becoming more popular. The only type of costume you can do for this is the stereotypical geek which would be a checkered shirt, with highly pulled up plain trousers showing your socks (preferably white) and braces. To add more effect on this costume as a stereotypical geek you can also get a large pair of black glasses and wrap tape around the middle joint, buy pocket protectors for the front pocket of the shirt and you can slick your hair back.

Gabriel Archangel in the Bible. Wear a standard angel costume complete with wings and halo

Ginger Spice In the 1990s 'Girl Power' group The Spice Girls, Gerri Halliwell was known as Ginger Spice because of her ginger hair and up-front attitude. Best known for her 'Brits' Union Jack dress and boots.

Geisha A traditional Japanese hostess, dressed in a Kimono and an Obi waistband. The hardest part of this costume is probabaly the make-up, which requires a whitened face and neck. Redraw the eyebrows, outline the eyes with black with an upward slant at the outer corners, red lips (however drawn smaller then the actual mouth) and choose one of the many suitable wigs. You can also have a Parasol accessory with this costume if you choose to as well.

General George Armstrong Custer He was an American Soldier who was killed at the Battle of Little Big Horn fighting the Sioux. Otherwise known as 'Custers Last Stand'. Can use either an American Civil War costume or even a fringed Cowboy jacket and trousers.

Godfather (Marlon Brando) Use a standard gangster costume.

Gods This is really open to interpretation as various religions have different gods. You could also go down the route of Greek or Roman Gods as a standard Roman / Grecian costume should suffice with the odd prop to get the desired effect - a bow & arrow for Diana the Huntress or an owl for Minerva, Goddess of Wisdom. The Egyptians tended to have Gods/Goddesses with animal heads, as did the Orientals eg. Ganesha - the elephant headed Hindu god of Success. Some are more complex and a costuming challenge (Kali - blue, six-armed Goddess of Destruction), but for some, Buddha (pictured) may find favour.

Goldfinger Baddie in the James Bond film of the same name. Had various costumes including suited, casual or golfing wear. He had his assistant Jill Masterton killed by painting her gold head-to-toe when she betrayed him..

Goldilocks Character from British children's story in which a pretty girl with golden hair shelters in a house, not knowing it is owned by three bears. She uses their chairs, eats their porridge and sleeps in their beds. How the tale ends depends on the version you read. A zombie version - Ghouldilocks (possibly the result of the less favourable outcome) is also available

Golfer Choose either a moder golfer (sunglasses, geometric jumper, loud 'Rupert Bear' trousers). Old fashioned (plus fours, cap, jumper). What about going as an Eagle, Birdie as a costume that is a bit different?

Golly Once a classic of the toybox (and Robinson Jam Jars). Now considered politically incorrect, although may be suitable for a 'Bad Taste' fancy dress party. Wear an afro style wig, black face make up with white eyes and wide mouth. Typically wears a black tailcoat, bowtie and red and white striped trousers

Greek costumes Very easy to do and because of this they are used for a lot of different parties, in fact they are one of the few ideas that actually have an entire party style based around them (Toga parties). The reason this costume idea is so common is due to the simplicity of the idea, along with the comfort and the room. All you need for this idea is a toga and maybe a small amount of accessories to finish the costume off like a laurel leaf, a rope belt and some sandals (and you don't even need these really).

Gendarme Originally a heavy cavalryman of noble birth, primarily serving in the French army from the Late Medieval to the Early Modern periods of European History. Now a member of the French police-force. Popularised through his depiction (by an English spy) in the T.V. comedy series 'Allo, 'Allo. A black uniform, black cape, white gloves with a french 'kepi' hat completing the look.

Gomez - From the Addams family the husband to Morticia - this character has two different styles you can pick from - the cartoon version wears a broad stripped gangster style grey/black suit or, the tv and cimena version the more conventional black pinstripe suit, plus moustache and cigar.

Goblins Easy or hard, depending on the amount of effort you want to put in. Goblins are always portrayed as having different colour skin to humans, so with this costume you would need to use face and body paints. The more traditional colour for goblins is green, however others like purple could be used as well. The costume itself can be done differently, you can go for a simple outfit, similar to the Gnome, or you can be a lot more creative, covering the costume with metal studs, spikes and chains going from shoulder to waist, in any fashion you see fit.

Gondolier Italian iconic character. Wear a striped jumper and a ribboned straw hat.

Grim Reaper Another name for 'Death'. Various costumes are available, some will include a mask, or just a hood. A scythe will normally complete the costume.
