February: Interesting Things About The Month

Updated on January 31, 2017

February: A Unique Month

According to the Julian and Gregorian calendars, February is the second month of the year following January.

February is a unique month. Even though February is the shortest month of the year, there are a lot of things to celebrate in the month. February has only 28 days except in a leap year, it has 29 days. With the extra day, it still has fewer days than the other 11 months.

Something else about February is that it is the only month that it usually doesn't have a single full moon like the other months. The last time February had a full moon was in 1999. The next time February will have a full moon is in 2018.

February Is Black History Month

February is known as "Black History Month" where African Americans are recognized for their contributions to the world.

Black History Month is an annual observance in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom to remember African Americans for their contributions to the world. The month is celebrated in the United States and Canada in February but in the United Kingdom in October.

While Black History Month seems to be a good thing for the majority of African Americans, not all people believe having a month dedicated to Blacks is a good thing. Black actor and director Morgan Freeman and actress Stacey Dash have criticized Black History Month. Freeman said, "I don't want a black history month. Black history is American history." Freeman argued that there is no White History Month. That's because white people do want their history reduced to just one month.
