February: Interesting Things About the Month
February: A Unique Month
February follows January with 31 days and comes before March that also has 31 days. Therefore, the shortest month of the year is sandwiched in between two long months. February is the only month on both the Julian and Gregorian calendars with only 28 days. During a leap year, the month has 29 days. Because it has only 28 days during a common year, it has no full moon because full moons occur every 29 and a half days.
February is a unique month. Even though February is the shortest month of the year, there are a lot of things to celebrate in the month.
February Is Black History Month
February is known as "Black History Month" where African Americans are recognized for their contributions to the world.
Black History Month is an annual observance in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The Netherlands was added to the list in 2016. The United Kingdom holds its observance in October.
President Gerald Ford recognized Black History Month in 1976. He encouraged Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history." Presidents of the United States have issued national decrees every year since 1976. There is a new theme for each Black History Month.
While Black History Month seems to be a good thing for the majority of African Americans, not all people believe having a month dedicated to Blacks is a good thing. Black actor and director Morgan Freeman and actress Stacey Dash have criticized Black History Month. Freeman said, "I don't want a black history month. Black history is American history." Freeman argued that there is no White History Month. That's because white people do want their history reduced to just one month.
