Cake Charm Fortune Telling

Updated on November 1, 2015

The Bridesmaid's Cake

Cake Pull Charms

The tradition of using cake pulls to tell fortunes at weddings has been coming back into fashion. They were used in Victorian times in England. It was called ribbon pulling since they used ribbons to make them. It can also be used at other parties.

At weddings the cake pulls are mainly used for the wedding party. They could in theory be used for everyone.

The charms can be purchased in several ways. They are sold at Michael's craft store and other craft places. You can use charms that you find. There are several online sites that sell them. I have also seen them just made out of paper. A picture is used on the paper to tell people's fortunes. People have also made the charms themselves.

You could also in theory also use different things for telling fortunes such as swizzle sticks or other little plastic figures. The charms are good since there is the circle there to attach the ribbon to.

Now the cake charms can be used at any other holidays. They can be used for Valentine's Day, New Year's Day, Christmas, weddings, birthdays, etc.

You can include a list of the meanings of the charms to give to guests if you would like. You can use the meanings included or get them from fortune telling books. The meanings of different objects are in tea leaf readings books.

1950s Cake Charms

I have also seen charms that they were using in the 1950s to tell people's fortunes. I am including a link to those charms here. The charms include a ring, motorcycle, banjo, chair, plane, teapot, fish and a birdcage. They are just pictures and not for sale. The fortunes are also there with them. I am including them for an example of what you can do.

Using the Cake Charms

In order to use the cake charms they have ribbons attached to them. They are not put in until the cakes are already baked. Each person gets their own charm to tell their fortune by. You can put the charms in by taking out a portion of the cake. Next, put the charm in with the ribbon portion hanging out. Fill in the hole with cake. Cover it up with frosting.

Paper Cake Pulls

You can make the cake pulls out of paper. I have seen them made so that they look quite nice. You can make them yourself from the rubber stamps. You know the stamps now can be incredibly cute. They should be made out of sturdy paper or cardboard. Then all you need to do is attach a ribbon to each one so they can be pulled out of the cake.

Valentine's Day Cake

Valentine's Day Fortune Cake

The first story I saw about telling fortunes by cake was for the Valentine's Day holiday. The cake was used to tell the single girl's fortunes. A ring was put in the cake. The girl that had the piece of cake with the ring would be the one that was getting married that year.

The Valentine's Day cake could be made in several different ways. A red velvet cake with chocolate frosting would look nice. So would a white cake with pink accents and whipped cream on top. It all depends on the person's taste.

Another type of cake that would be nice for this day would be a white or violet cake. It could be flavored with almond and rose flavoring or violet. Having other colored layers would make it different also.

I think they baked it in the cake in the past. I would not want someone to choke on the ring. The girls should be told about the ring being in the cake. It would spoil it to have a ribbon because then they can see which slice has the ring. But you could put ribbons on each one with nothing there and have only one ribbon with a ring. Or you can put other fortunes on the other ribbon pulls.

New Year's Eve Cake

New Year's Eve would be a very good time to tell fortunes. Everyone wants to know what their fortune would be for the new year. I have seen some cakes with one candle on them. There are many different things that you can do with the cakes.

I have seen some cakes for that day with sparklers even lit on the cakes. You can wait until midnight to light it. Then you can have the guests pull the charms for their new fortunes.

Will the Fortunes Come True?

I myself think it is fun to do fortunes. I even mainly believe in them. From what I have read, there is a good chance of them coming true in some way. If the fates want to do the fortune to come true it will.

That being said, you really want to use the charms in a positive sense. You don't want anyone to be really unhappy with their charm. I notice that some of the charms can be a bit of a downer. A girl does not really want to pick one out that says old maid on it. That is unless of course, you have a group of people with really great senses of humor about it. It is perhaps better not to take chances on that.

It is all done in fun. It should all be done in a good way. You do need to let the fortunes come out by chance.

This sounds like a fun idea and with Valentine's Day coming up, it might be a great addition to someone's Valentine's Day party. Or just a cute idea for a small cake as a gift to someone special. Include a charm just for fun.

Voted up and going to share this great idea with my followers!

Very cool, I'd never heard of this but now it's something I want to do. Being a typical family of Pagan Witchiness, we often do tarot readings on New YEar's Eve, lol. This would fit right in.
