From there, just indulge yourself and allow your creativity to come out and play.
Here are more examples of fresh Christmas centerpieces. This year, I try to cut back on flowers and allow the Christmas foliage to shine. On the whole, leaves are cheaper than flowers. Check them out:
Who says snow and fire don't mix? Here, Snowman is toting a light with and he looks perfectly at home with it. No meltdowns, no fear--only a whimsical smile that says it's Christmas and we can all get along...even with unlikely elements or people (come to think of it).
Sitting Pretty in a Box
Anytime you box something, you give it definition and transform it from blah to wow. With a few snippets of white orchids (technically dendobium) and lots and lots of Christmas foliage, this centerpiece is easy to assemble. You can use any box, line it with clear plastic sheets to prevent leakage, plop down a thoroughly-soaked oasis and then plug in your flowers. So simple and stunning.

Christmas isn't quite Christmas without reindeer. Rein in a reindeer to set off the festive mood. I bought this reindeer tealight at Pier 1 imports and a reindeer bowl from Home Goods, another thrift store (depending on your definition) and allow this motif to play through the centerpiece. I built the arrangement from the base up and top it with the reindeer tealight.

Let It Shine
Light and lanterns--they go hand in hand. When you solicit the help of a simple lantern, the centerpiece takes on a grandeur all its own. Put in a tealight, turn down the lights and watch the stars on the lantern play on your wall. Very magical and rightly so--it's Christmas after all.

Santa Needs a Christmas Tree Too
So maybe Santa is too busy taking care of others to worry about himself. But he needs Christmas too, so here he is lugging his own Christmas tree...hopefully, in time for Christmas.
This centerpiece is made up of entirely free Noble fir from the discard pile of Home Depot. A Santa socking and a good old bicycle from the junk store and there you have it--a delightfully playful piece.
