Fun Halloween Office Pranks (That Won't Get You Fired)
Halloween Fun at Work
Each year, more and more offices opt to have some real fun on Halloween. Some offices allow employees to dress in costume. Other offices have a Halloween party. Some jobs even encourage employees to take part in fun games, like Office Halloween Trick or Treat games. The best places to work allow all of these activities to take place. If you work at a job that allows Halloween pranks, you are in luck. There are plenty of tricks to play on unsuspecting co-workers.
I would like to share some of my favorite pranks you can pull on co-workers for Halloween, but these are not anything too outrageous. The goal of these tricks (or treats) is to have some real fun, yet not get fired. If you are wondering what crosses the line, it depends on where you work.
At my job, there has been dead fish left in a desk drawer, live fish swimming in a desk drawer, and an entire cubicle full of shredded paper. At my job, people are pretty demented. I would daresay those pranks might get you fired at some offices. Instead of going all out and telling you some elaborate prank that might get you fired, I want you to keep your job. Here are some suggestions for fun tricks you can play at work and not get fired.
Severed Head in the Work Fridge
Ah yes, a time honored classic - the good old fashioned severed head in the work fridge prank. This is a pretty decent prank without going too far. Of course, I am telling you to use a fake severed head. A real severed head will surely get you fired and probably arrested. That whole grave robbing or being a killer thing is a one-way ticket to unemployment and jail and/or the mental institution.
You don't necessarily have to go with a severed head to pull off this prank. A light activated prop will work extremely well, too. A ghost, severed head, or any other scary item that screams when the door opens is great for a Halloween trick using a fridge. When you get bored pranking your co-workers, take it home and prank the people living with you. You've got hours of fun waiting for you!
Strategically Placed Mice or Spiders
A good, tame Halloween prank is the old "mouse in the desk" trick. You can buy a bag of fake mice, spiders, bugs, or snakes at the dollar store, and then place them all over the office. You can also simply place them inside a desk drawer. Furthermore, a mouse on a computer mouse is pretty hilarious.
The only time this doesn't work is if you are dealing with someone that scares easily who has an intense fear of mice, bugs, spiders, etc. For instance, my boss freaks out if she even thinks about a mouse. Naturally, since I don't want to lose my job, I would know better than to prank her with mice in her office.... that means no live mice or plastic mice! Live mice would get me fired. Fake mice would probably mean she wouldn't speak to me for a week and I would never get a raise again. So yeah, just make sure the person you prank can handle it. Some people have pretty intense phobias and it is not cool to mess with that.
Ghoulish Creature in Chair
Imagine you are running into the office one day at work, you turn your office chair around to sit in it, and... gasp... a monster is sitting in your chair! It is a pretty standard gag, but it is pretty scary, too. It can also be hilarious depending on what is in your chair.
For some reason, at my job we have an ugly pig mask everyone likes to use for pranks. We also have an entire pig outfit that goes along with this mask. It is all beyond my understanding what the pig has to do with our job and why it exists, yet it does. It provides countless hours of entertainment, especially when we prank someone that scares easily. Like I said, we are demented at my office.
At your office, you can try to use a number of creepy monsters for this prank. Evil dolls, voodoo dolls, ghosts, and other ghouls are perfect for this prank. The more life-like the creature, the better the prank. I'll bet you can even find some type of creepy monster or prop to use in your own home. If not, there are many to choose from online and in Halloween shops.
A good standard prank includes weird emails. Mind you, this prank can cross a line, so make sure you know the person you are pranking pretty well, and if he or she starts to freak out, you've gone too far.
The basic premise for this prank is to create a fake email address. It takes minutes to open a new account on Yahoo or Hotmail, and it is free. If possible, try something creepy like firstname.lastname@example.org or something along those lines. Once you've got your fake email address, start sending your co-worker scary messages.
Anything that is an outright threat is not funny or cute. It is scary and you might get fired. However, stealing a co-worker's stapler for the day and then sending ransom messages via email is hilarious. You can also try sending scary photos, but people often won't click on those links if they have to go to a new webpage. So be creative, but don't scare your co-worker too much.
Sound Effects Add a Special Touch
A fun gag to pull on co-workers involves just sound effects. If you are walking by a co-worker's office, simply use a sound effect machine to scare them with a witch's scream, a black cat meowing, or a blood-curdling ghost moan. If you are really in a creative mood, set up a CD player in a hidden spot and play Halloween sound effects. This works even better if you have a remote control.
Another way you can make this prank work is if you can get an IT person to help rig your victim's computer with scary sound effects. You might not think this is possible, but our IT guy once managed to rig an employee's computer so she heard a burping sound on her speakers every time she hit a certain key on the keyboard. As you can tell, we are doing a lot of really practical work at our company.
Let us not forget a nice basic Halloween prank that works well for any office... the classic spider web trick. I am not talking about anything weird like using real spider webs or anything. You can simply get rid of your cleaning crew and add some spiders to your office if you want to experience real spider webs everywhere. I am talking about the spider webs you buy in bulk at Walmart or the Halloween store that come in plastic bags. You can even find spider webs that glow in the dark now. They are pretty awesome.
Some great spider web pranks include stringing the webs across doorways, spreading them across entire offices or cubicles, or even just twisting them around entire desks. If you somehow wind the spider webs around the office chairs and the desk so it can't be unwound for a while, you have just created an awesome Halloween prank.
Lots and Lots of Balloons
If you've got a lot of patience and you've got a lot of balloons, you can fill a person's entire office with balloons. Although this Halloween gag takes a while to do, it is amazing if you do it right. You can fill an office with just orange and black balloons, or you can go with multi-colors. For that matter, this joke works pretty well for birthdays or April Fool's Day.
The great thing about a room full of balloons is no one can get too angry. It is a funny prank and it is tough to be mad when it comes to something as delightful as balloons. Balloons make people feel too festive to be full of resentment. Also, they are easy to clean up. An office full of toilet paper or shredded paper leaves too much dust and just isn't as pleasant to clear out. An entire office full of balloons means lots of fun popping them and throwing them away.
Trick or treating your co-workers at your job should be fun. This is especially the case if your office is kind enough to allow this type of activity. Make sure not to abuse this chance to actually have fun at work. At my job, the tricks tend to go further each year and many people will not even participate anymore. If you don't want that to happen, make sure your prank does not inflict emotional scars by terrifying anyone too much. It is also important to remember extremely smelly or messy pranks are not appreciated by anyone. An entire cubicle full of shredded paper sounds funny until the victim spends weeks trying to clean off all the dust it left behind.
Don't be a party pooper this Halloween. Creativity is great, but a treat is also nice. Just remember, even if your prank is scarier than you intended it to be, a nice plastic pumpkin full of treats often smooths things over. Happy Halloween!
