Ganesh Chaturthi - The birthday of Lord Ganesha

Ganesh chaturthi is a famous Hindu festival celebrated all over India. It is the birthday of lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha is also called in the name Vinayaka. So Ganesh chaturthi is also known as Vinayaka chaturthi. Most of the states of India celebrates Ganesh chaturthi in a very auspicious way. In some states like Maharashtra This festival is celebrated for several days. The devotees of Lord Ganesha celebrates these days very joyfully. The Ganesh chaturthi is also celebrated in outside India but not in an auspicious manner. Lord Ganesha is the son of lord Shiva and goddess Parvathi. Lord Ganesha's head looks like the head of elephant. It was Lord Shiva who made the Ganesha's head to an elephant's head. The Lord Ganesha is considered as strong god by the devotees. The festival of Ganesha is usually celebrated on the month of September. Usually it is celebrated for ten days. During these festival days the streets will be beautifully decorated with colorful lights.

Various beautiful idols of Lord Ganesha will be available in the markets during these festival days. These idols are made by various experts using clay. The devotees buy the idols of Vinayaka and worship on this festival day. People sing and dance in the streets during the celebrations. Ganapathi is also one of the name of Lord Ganesha. "Ganapathi bappa morya is a famous bhajan which will be shouted by the people in the streets on this day. One of the famous tradition that takes place in this popular day is that various groups of devotees carry large idols of lord Ganesha and walk to reach the river. When the group of devotees reaches the river they shout the bhajans and immerse these large idols in the river. This tradition is usually seen in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka etc.

The devotees prepare variety of delicious sweet dishes such as ladoos on the birthday of lord Ganesha. The devotees visits the temple at the early morning on this day and worships the lord. Special poojas for Lord Ganesha will be arranged at early mornings especially in the Ganesha temples. The idol of Lord inside the temple will be beautifully decorated with flowers and ornaments.Abhishekam(pouring milk to the idol) will be made to the idols in the temples of lord Ganesha. Variety of programmes such as drama,bhajans etc will be arranged on these days. The devotees also make Ganesha decorations in their own houses on this day. Every people wishes their friends and relatives on this happy day. The people enjoys this day by joining together with their family.
