Gift Ideas for Five Year Old Girls

Updated on May 16, 2015

Getting the Perfect Gift for a Five Year Old Girl

I take a lot of pride in picking out gifts for our girls and am often in charge of getting gifts for birthday parties, Christmas and gift exchanges. I'm putting a list together of gift ideas for five-year-old girls that I think they will love.

Turning five is pretty special in our house, and it may be the biggest celebration we have. When I turned five, our parents took me to Disneyland for the first time. In my family, we are carrying on the tradition. So for the fifth birthday, we are taking our daughter to Disneyland for her present. Since this is the big birthday, we will also have a few smaller gifts as well.

Five years old marks a significant mark in a child's development physically and emotionally. Girls at this age have a range of capabilities like the ability to ride a bike, read basic words, and dress themselves.

Their personality is taking shape as well as their interests, so the best gift ideas should celebrate them as an individual.

Giving Tips: Gift Ideas for Five Year Old Girls

  • Understand their capabilities as their ability to read, draw, catch and balance. Think of gifts that are a stretch for their abilities, but be careful to not overshoot on what they can do. You want to show them that we realize they are growing up, but the gift should still help build their confidence.
  • Personality traits and interests are much more prominent at five. Presents should recognize their individuality and target the things they like.

For the Girl that Loves Fashion, Cute Sweaters, Jeans, Bows, Socks and Shoes - The Complete Outfit for a 5 Year Old

For the five-year-old that is a fashionista. Girls appreciate a great outfit that goes well together with the sweater or jacket to the clip in her hair. It surprises me a bit at how talented little girls can be at putting together an outfit. An outfit that has options is an excellent way to recognize that she's passionate about style and challenge her creativity by getting combinations of clothes for her to create her outfits with accessories. You may even take her shopping so she can pick everything out herself.

Gift Idea #2 - Makeup kit for a young girl

While we want to be careful about putting too much of an emphasis on a young girls personal appearance, there is no denying that some little girls love nail polish and lip gloss. An age appropriate makeup kit is an excellent idea for a five-year-old that loves playing with makeup.

Makeup is one of those things that is an early opportunity to teach the kids about what is appropriate. A mother can show them how to take care of makeup and how to apply it from lipstick to eye shadow. The only thing about this gift is it requires a bit of supervision.

Karaoke for kids that an Ipod plugs into

Gift Idea #3 - Karaoke for kids

For kids that love singing trendy songs from the likes of Taylor Swift, there are karaoke machines for kids that an iPod can plug into. Encouraging children to sing and perform in front of a group helps to build their confidence.

A great supplement to this gift is an Itunes gift card so they can pick out some of their favorite songs to sing.

Gift Idea #4, Kids Sleeping Bag

At five years old, little girls may be having their first sleepovers. Having their sleeping bag is an excellent way to get them comfortable sleeping out of their beds. Have them camp out at home in their bags before going to a friends house. Extra bonus for getting their names put on the bag and case.

Gift Idea #5, Pinkalicious, Goldalicious, Purplalicious, Silveralicious

The Pinkalicious series of books are excellent beginner reader books, and each story has a cute ending. At recent birthday parties, I've noticed these books have been given out as party favors instead of candy. The little girls enjoy them, but make sure they haven't already read them before purchasing the series.

Gift Ideas #6, Art Supplies

Most kids turn five before starting kindergarten. Experience with glue, cutting, and making simple art projects is an excellent way to keep them busy with creative activities and prepare them for their first school experience.

A great craft activity is to have them draw and cut out their name and paste it on a piece of colored construction paper.

Gift Idea #7, Kids Bike

At five, it's time to take off the training wheels and build up their riding skills. A five-year-old is capable of riding a bike a mile or two. Getting them a fresh pair of wheels and making sure they have a proper helmet is a great way to encourage them to be active and to get outside to enjoy the day.

Gift Idea #8, Ears Pierced and Earrings

Not all girls are ready to get their ears pierced at five, but many already have. If the girl wants her ears pierced that's the parents decision, but I have no issue with it if the child is confident they are ready. Take them to a professional to get their ears pierced and get them a gift of earrings with high-quality gold posts to help prevent infection until their stud holes heal.

Gift Idea #9, Sorry and Hedbandz Games

Sorry is that game where the pieces slide around the board where the goal is to get all the pieces home to win. It's a very simplistic game, but it teaches young children gaming mechanics, and while an adult will tire of the game after playing it a couple of times, kids love it. They can play for hours.

Hedbandz is another classic game where each person gets a headband that holds a card. Then they ask questions until they can guess what their card is. It's great for teaching kids how to ask specific questions. As an adult, I prefer playing this game. Without the headbands, we often play a version of it called guess my animal.

Gift Idea #10, Make a Gift a Family Tradition

In our family, each kid gets the same gift when they turn five. We take them for the first time to Disneyland. It's over the top, but we take them on a trip, stay at the Grand Californian and go to Disneyland for full two days. When our first two daughters turned five, we were able to get Club 33 tickets that made it extra special. In 2013, our youngest daughter was turning five, and while her gift isn't a surprise, she's already super excited knowing that she's going.

The Razor trike is a tricycle for kids 5 -10 and has casters on the back, allowing the bike to spin. Fits in an average trunk for outings to the park. It's been a hit here. Also the old fashioned pedal cars are great if you have more room to roam. Five year olds very favorite toy? Plush Monster: Max A Galoompagalots from Manhattan Toy.

i highly recommend art supplies. My 5 year old niece loves to dry, paint, color etc. I feel like it really opens her up and helps keep her imagination going. Head bands are always helpful too.
