Updated on April 20, 2010

Gardening Gifts

There are many different gifts that you can give an avid gardener, and they can range from a simple seed assortment to a large gift basket. You'll want to sit down and really think about what you want to purchase before you make your decision, but in all reality any gardener will love anything that can be used in or around the garden.

Depending on the skill level, age, and overall affinity for gardening, you'll find that there are many different options.

Common gift choices for gardeners include:

  • Gardening books
  • Gardening gloves
  • Gardening tools
  • Plant and flower seeds
  • Flower pots (indoor and/or outdoor)

Gardening Gloves and Tools

When gardening, it is very important to have proper gardening gloves and tools.

You'll find that gloves are indispensable, and true gardeners will actually go through gloves like crazy. Gloves can easily be torn, and thinned out over time and washing, which is why a new pair of gardening gloves or even a few pairs of gloves make great gifts for gardeners.

As for tools, gardeners always need tools, whether the large shovel, hoe, and digger, or miniature spades, weeders, and forks. You can find cheap sets of gardening tools that make great gifts. In some cases, you may even be able to find a matching set of tools and gloves. Look for sturdy tools that have wood or metal handles; sometimes the solid plastic tools can be sturdy, all depending on how they are made.

Gardening Gift Basket

If you can't think of anything to buy for your gardener, gift baskets are always a great way to go. There are different types of gardening gift baskets that you can choose from. The below gift baskets can be for anyone (even though they do say "for mom" or "for her"), but if you're still not thrilled about buying a gardening gift basket for your dad or younger brother, you can purchase other gift baskets that are geared for gardeners.

Or, you can make a gift basket with gardening supplies and products. Homemade gift baskets are a great idea because you can include personalized and hand picked items that the recipient will love. There are so many options ranging from vegetables, fruits, plants, flowers, herbs, and others. You may have to do a little research when buying just seeds to make sure that the flowers are compatible with the locale. You'll also want to make sure that you know what your gardener likes and prefers; you don't want to package up sunflower seeds, if the gardener finds sunflowers gaudy.

Seed kits are great for beginners and children who want to start a garden. Just like regular packs of seeds, you can purchase kits with a variety of different seeds. Most of the garden seed kits are going to be herbs, but you can find a few that contain vegetables (like tomatoes and beans) or flowers (sunflowers being the most popular).
