Gong Xi Fa Cai. Gong Hei Fat Choy. Wan Shi Ru Yi. Guo Nian Hao. Happy Chinese Lunar New Year 2018!

Updated on March 3, 2018

From the Spring Festival to the Lantern Festival

For 15 days,  about a month of the beginning of the Gregorian calendar year, the most important holiday for the Chinese people is celebrated.  The Lunar, or Chinese New Year.  It is the time when families reunite over a special meal.  It is a time of new beginnings and blessings.

Spring Festival

The Chinese New Year holiday begins with the Spring Festival.  Often people in China are given a week off to celebrate it so they call this the Golden Week.  The new year's holiday season actually lasts longer than than but they don't get to party for the entire 15 days.

One could call the Lunar New Year festival a blessed time of the year because the people who celebrate are surrounded by blessings.  Not only do friends and family wish one another good wealth, good health and long life but color written blessings are used as decorations everywhere.

Children can look forward to this time of year as much as children in the west look forward to Christmas.  This is because Chinese children will often receive gifts, treats, new clothes and if they are lucky enough to get a special red envelope, even money!

Lantern Festival

The 15 day period for Chinese New Year extends from the first new moon of the year to the first full moon that comes after the first new moon.  The end of the period is marked by a celebration called the lantern festival.  During the Lantern Festival thousands of brightly colored an ornate lanterns will be lit.  Often the lanterns are covered with riddles that are for the children to solve.

Some say that New Year traditions such as fire crackers and even the lanterns are meant to keep evil spirits at bay.

The lanterns are also said to be a way of inviting or even celebrating the good graces of good spirits.
